Suggestion

However, if you like shifting and running through the revs and having a powerband to play with, a screaming NA engine may be more fun and should be pretty much plug and play.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone have any experience or advice on putting a metzger turbo engine into a 2002 996 C4S ? I was thinking about rebuilding my engine but wondering if I should go down the route of a conversion if I can sources a turbo engine for relatively cheap (compared to rebuild prices). Does anyone know what it entails ? Any additional coding Id have to do ?

POST 2Original post

I'd suggest you read @De Jeeper 's thread as he put a GT3 engine into a C2. The upshot is it can be done.... but you probably need a parts car to do it. Especially with a turbo because literally everything behind the back seat is different.

POST 3Original post

Motor mounts are completely different. Its beyond just coding. You need the entire drivetrain and ECU from a donor 996 turbo. Lots of fabrication are in order. Its infinitely easier to just buy a turbo, fill in the side intake, and swap the decklid.

POST 4Original post

Here u go. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-the-dust.html I would suggest a donor with a front end total. If u have the will it can be done.

POST 6Original post

I'll be interested to follow along but if the engine in my C4S were to blow, I'd go with a N/A 3.8 or 4.0. I can't imagine that swapping a used Metzger turbo into a N/A chassis would be cost effective compared to a rebuilt N/A, but I admit that I haven't priced it out.

^^^This. If you want a turbo mezger, 996 Turbos that are mid mileage and not a unicorn color will be alot cheaper (all-in) and are bargains for now. But we all see whats happening with the 996 market. So don't wait too long.

POST 8Original post

You will also need a tranny. Mezger won't bolt up to yours.

POST 9Original post

Having previously owned turbos, I would suggest exploring building up a higher displacement NA engine via Slakker or other specialists. Plug and play, can address the design flaws of your engine. Will provide potentially more real world excitement and fun for daily driving. Turbos provide more torque and more power over more RPM's, depending upon cams, etc., but in real world driving I find them somewhat boring except for eating up highway miles or outrunning people on the straight sections of a DE event. Plus much more complex, much more heat to manage, etc. with turbos. And if you bump up torque and hp, you will be introducing more loading into all the other drivetrain components, so should look into hot that will affect your trans and diff lubrication and cooling, as well as brakes. That may be exactly what you want! However, if you like shifting and running through the revs and having a powerband to play with, a screaming NA engine may be more fun and should be pretty much plug and play. Put the savings into handling and DE track events to build skills and to learn how to wring it out of your car. Just my 2cents, and not that turbos are not a lot of fun, it's just different.

As others have said, and DJ has done (albeit when prices for these donor cars was much much cheaper) the fastest easiest most economical by far way to go about this is with a donor car. And a high mechanical skill level, also with some fabrication skills and problem solving skills. Make no mistake, this is not a simple fast swap. 996 Turbo uses the race-derived Mezger engine. which does not suffer from the famous IMS bearing failure or cylinder bore scoring the standard Carrera suffers from. wrecked 996 TT is a goldmine for parts. Even if the donor body is a total loss, a old but running Mezger engine alone frequently commands $15,000 to $25,000+. Then you also need a mezger tranny, its not only kind of rare, but expensive for a good one. Recently in the past few years good or wrecked TT prices have gone sky high compared to 5 years ago. Check out this tranny for $13K at Specialized German bone yard, still in the car but claimed to be mint. I've been looking for a 996TT project, this is one I've seen.. the entire wreck for $46,000 + shipping etc.. https://www.ebay.com/itm/16847418304...0aAoH1EALw_wcB To get a donor 996 TT or GT2/3 car thats rear end is in good shape will cost ya as boneyards know what they've got in this day and age. When DJ did his, all 996 where just coming out of a bottom low price period. Now in recent months, a decent TT 996 is close to a $100K+, car, some $200K, (although recently i just missed a high miles TT that slipped thru BaT for 40K amazingly very cheap compared to recent sales, thats the rare outlier. Forget about any GT 996 like DJ got. IMHO, best too Take the advice of many others suggestions here in your thread. Sell your 996 for whatever you can get now and buy a TT if thats what you really want (Maybe the best 996 ever). You'll always come out ahead financially that way. And the way things are going for TT now, probably not to far in the future all 996 TT will be in the $200K range as others realize their 911 value... jmho

Good summary. I have always preferred the NA narrow body 996 and the M96 powerband. So to me, a rebuild by one of the specialists for an extra 100 hp/tq is the better way to improve performance and durability while retaining the NA characteristics. But some guys love the characteristics of a turbo. Nothing wrong with that. Looking forward to the thread if the OP does the swap.

$100 says it will not happen once all the information is presented...... This question has been asked numerous times in this 996 NA Forum.. Only people who has the wherewithal to pull this off are the top 3%'ers , like DJ,.... Must have good wrenching skillz, good fabrication skillz, attention to details, $$$$ , a donor car ,(for all the big and little parts), an excellent understanding of all thing's mechanical, and a ton of patience PS :: No, at 70YO I am not in the 3%'ers any longer ....lol...
