It's mad expensive and I don't know anyone in the US that has purchased and installed their systems.
Leading evidence: 'Install their systems' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'different story' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install their systems' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I have used ASP in the past and they are very cheap.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey everyone,
I wanted to start a thread to identify and source all the odd bits needed for performance upgrades for our 996 cars.
We all know the basics; intake, headers, mufflers, chips, superchargers and even the plenum and then of course the various suspensions.
What I don't see/hear much of in the 996 forums are other bits and their sources such as...
underdrive pulleys
LSD Diffs
gear packs
Ring & Pinion swap
brake upgrade to larger model's and the bracket/adapters necessary
Camshaft upgrades
Independent Throttle bodies and runners (I know a little hardcore)
replacement ECU for spark/timing, etc such as megasquirt
etc...
I think many on these boards will tell you that with the exception of suspension and LSD (which is a possible factory option) none of these are "performance" upgrades.
I would love to hear an educated post about the various differential options.
I don't have a limited slip on my 99, and have often considered getting one. There are a couple options for me - the standard type similar to either what came in the original 99's, or a more aggresive GT3-type. There is also the Quaife differential, which also sounds intriguing.
What are the pros/cons of the various types for street, track, and bad weather?
Anyone? Anyone?
Paul, I am surprised too that no one has made underdrive pulleys for the 996.
ASP racing makes custom pulleys for whatever you want. You can just send them the stock pulleys, ID which is which, and tell them the % reduction you are looking to achieve.
There is one drawback to underdrive pulleys, slowing the alternator down can sometimes kill it fairly fast. Second, the poor cooling of the M96 may be magnified by the reduction of the water pump.
I have used ASP in the past and they are very cheap. You can get a whole custom pulley set done for
probably
cheaper than one pulley from Porsche.
One has to take the Porsche blinders off and look to the outside world.
I bet that there are many companies out there who would make a custom set of gears for the diff and clusters for the trans that are cheaper than the stock, factory ones.
Some companies that come to mind are Richmond gear, Tremec, Moroso, Auburn, and so on.
Good post paul. Personally I think the gearing is wrong in the 996 and needs to be shorter. Lots of guys over on the GT3 forum do rings or re-gear the tranny but it seems there's no info on it over here. Def. one mod I'd be interrested in hearing more about.
Cams would be interresting to me too. If my motor ever needs to come out I'm gonna do them. However I think the drawback is being able to find someone capable of custom tuning the ECU in the car to maximize gains....which leads to your custom tuning solutions (megasquirt etc).

FVD has an enlarged throttle body for the 3.4 cable throttle and they sometimes have them for the e-Gas cars.

Guard Transmissions makes a drop in LSD for our cars, a few various options available for lockup ratios on acel/decel.

I understand that regearing is available for our trans. I need to find the email about it.
My 5.2.2 DME was tuned by protomotive with a hybrid of 3.6 fuel maps and x51 stuff so that it runs the new 3.6 motor (efficiently).
996 Headers = 997 Headers. So the 3.8 x51 headers fit the 3.6 and 3.4 engines.
Same thing for the Cats... interchangeable.
The 997 mufflers do not work right out of the box on the 996 only because the 997 tips are place slightly different (but folks have modified them).
Max wheels and tires.
Front: 17x9.5 with ET50 with a 275/40/17 Hoosier. Fits but rubs on inside at the spring. 5mm spacer is ideal so ET45 and lower is recommended. Will size down to a 265 or 255 in the future.
Rear: 17x11.5 with ET60 with a 315/35/17 Hoosier is the max that I can get in there. Had to trim the inner liner at the bottom front to fit w/o any rub. Fender lip was rolled as well. There seems to be a bit more room on the inside once the liner was trimmed.
One thing that I migh consider getting is the High Performance Oil Separator from Porsche p/n 996 107 926 00, it is not a performance upgrade but it will prevent oil from going into the intake manifold and making our porkers smoke when driven hard at corners.. also I would consider the baffles and the spacer for the oil pan wich adds 0.5 QT ...
Ignorant question.....................is it really a big deal to have an LSD for the street?
Since there isn't enough torque to "smoke" the tires on a quick takeoff, what advantage is there to having one?
Pete
I've checked out that t-t-p.de site before when I had a Boxster S... 450hp upgrade. It's mad expensive and I don't know anyone in the US that has purchased and installed their systems.
I wonder why the local shop TPC doesn't do Turbo on 996s?
LSD is really only needed on the track and even then for folks that are pushing it pretty hard.
As for burnouts maybe KJ can post his picture of one in his 996 C2 w/ LSD.
I guess I have LSD coz both tires made marks. I dropped at 5000 RPMs.. I was impressed how well the 996 grabbed.. the 2nd time at close to 6000 RPMs I was able to do a lil' burn out. I could never get it right in the 996 Turbo.. suffering wheelhop.
Note I only tried it once... I've never done it before that. It was actually fun.
Even at the track their is disagreement if it is a real benefit in our cars. I have never missed it in my Boxster at the track and JimB (who knows a ton about tracking 996 C2's) said he didn't need it in his 996 C2 X51 racecar.
With the rear engine configuration these cars don't have much problem putting 300+ hp to the wheels. GT2 power......that's probably a different story.
I suppose that would be an advantage for sure but mine sleeps in the winter!
Thanks everyone for providing some insight on the +/- of LSD for the street!
Pete
I drive my 996 all winter long and it works well without it. The PSM system incorporates ABD at low speeds which acts like an electronic LSD for low speed slip.
To clarify Ray, I think there are a couple of tough braking zones like T5 at Road America, T10 at Road Atlanta where the LSD really helps settle the backend. T 7/T8 at Sebring is the only place I really had problems with wheel spin before I added an LSD. Its a second gear, very rough corner. I would never buy one for a street car. The 996's great suspension keeps the car hooked up most of the time.
If I was building another 996 I would focus on reducing weight first, tweaking the suspension second and then redoing the gearing.
Ray, I'm not sure I ever thanked you for coming down to talk to me after my shunt at Montreal. It was great having friendly faces around.
Jim
No problem Jim. I was very sorry to see it happen. I hope the repairs are going well.
When you added the LSD to your old 996 racecar did it increase understeer?
The repairs are going to take awhile but I bought a 944T track car last winter so I have something to play with. We're headed for the track tonight.
Depending on how the LSD is set up it will increase understeer somewhat. I had a lot of ***** on that car so I could pretty much set it up the way I wanted. I like to race with some understeer. For me it's faster.
Thanks for the pictures!
Jim
