After the shortest test drive of my life, I bought one.

I was toying with the idea of test driving a 2008 R32 at the dealer.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

On my way home I had an encounter with these two, only moments before I thought to myself "wow it's been a while since I've been engaged with folks on this hwy".
Quick question what the hell is a VW R32. lol! And for the record I came in second.
Light the flames.
I'd expect a loss (straight line) from a Z06, but the VW is heavier than your 996, has AWD (additional driveline drag), and is 50hp down on your car.
All that being said.....street racing????......are you serious?
The R32 is a souped-up, AWD VW GTI. It shouldn't give a 996 too much trouble unless the driver catches you off guard.
Awfully nice FWD-based car, though, especially with the DSG transmission.
As long as we're busy mag racing, why not consider a road course (rather than straight line).
Nurburgring times;
Carrera GT 7:28
997 GT3 7:47
C6 Z06 7:49
996 GT3 7:54
C5 Z06 7:56 (7.33 lbs/hp is a big help)
996 C2 8:17
VW R32 8:32
Ford Transit van 10:08
Quick Answer:
It is the most fun car I've owned in over Thirty-five years!
250hp N/A VR6, AWD, 6spd manual, huge brakes, sporty suspension, 18" wheels w/ 225-40 rubber.
But it's no racer. It's just an angry little hatchback.
Most people compare it to the Mitsubishi EVO and the Subaru STI, but those two turbo 4 cyl cars are much quicker than the R32.
To me, it has enough creature comforts to qualify as a touring car, but enough zip to keep things interesting. Just ask some of the participants in Arrwin's October outing. I was there as a guest, and didn't have any trouble keeping up with the pack.

Man Ray, what did you do to me! When I'm at the Ring with my C2 (hopefully somewhen next year), I'll always remember the 10:08 Ford Transit time. I'm sure 10min is more than a walk in the park for a newbie on the Ring, even with a 996, so I fear I'll feel like a loser. As a student I worked as a courier, driving this lame duck Transit all the time.
Both cars on street tires, stock, I was about 8 seconds slower in a R32 than my 996 at WSIR, but I was still 3.5 seconds faster than the car's owner which entitled me to a beer.
I was toying with the idea of test driving a 2008 R32 at the dealer.
In the specs it seems kinda heavy.
Is yours a 2008, or the previous generation?
Bill
i drove that, a cayman, a 996, and a 997 (busy day) all in the same day, and the R32 just felt heavy compared to all of them. It's a great car and sounds good, but too heavy for me to want one. My friend that owns it, has already started ripping stuff out of it.
Like what?
STi: Much harder-edged car with a crappy interior
Evo: Much harder-edged car with a crappy interior
Audi TT: Pretty much the same car
Mazdaspeed 3: Can't see someone buying this over an R32
I'm out of ideas. I think the R32 really is in a class of its own, as I just can't see anyone that wants one really considering anything else.
Any other ideas?
For a small car, it is very heavy. Over 3300lbs!
Even though it doesn't feel as nimble as a lighter car, it is very easy to drive and very, very forgiving.
Previous gen, 2004.
From what I understand, the '08s are even heavier than the '04s, in part because they are only available with the DSG transmission.

I needed an all-year driver after totalling my AWD Volvo. Planned a 997 C4S because, well, there is no substitute
Continued to look for more practical (and economical) solutions. Once you get to the $50K range, I figured might as well go for the 997. And NONE of the cars really satisfied me. S4 was too heavy, S5 the same though very impressive in fit/finish and quality. Just wallowed as it flew.
A3 impressed me as sportier than either, but the seat felt cheap and the suspension was "jumpy". I loved the DSG...
On a lark, was pointed at the R32. After the shortest test drive of my life, I bought one. Great seat, solid reassuring suspension, wonderful engine and tranny. Gobs of room for such a small car, steering feel is near Porsche-like, and all sorts of mods are available because of the last gen success. The doors are solid, too.
My plan is to now wait for the 998 and DSG in the Porsche.
But as far as others doing "it" better? My take is the R is very unique in what it does, combining performance, comfort and quality remarkably well for it's price. My bet: the EVO and STI will kill it on performance, but not be nearly as satisfying regards solidity.
To prove it, I'm still trying to sell my 996 even though the plan was only to move it when the 997 arrived....
From what I can remember, your 996 is a little bit faster than the stock model.
You should know better than to street race....lol.
-There, I just lit the flame.
Well I've moved from the drag strip part of town so the old days of seeing high end/highly modified cars are gone. Now am up in the woods with 7 miles of very twisty roads to travel just to get to a main artery. Nothing but pickups with rebel flags on the rear window to contend with.
You're right, the Evo & Sti are much faster than the R32, yet they are not nearly as satisfying.
There is just no substitute for German engineering, plus the R32 is loaded with well thought out creature comforts that the more spartan Evo & Sti don't have.
I am totally enamored of my '04 R32, but I realize it's no Race Car. Just a fun little hatchback.
--Chuck--
funny...the interior on the TT and on the R32 are just as crappy as the interiors of the STi and EVO...oh, and our 996's interior are in the same league too...
These guys bring out the R32's real potential --

.
On some website they had the previous generation R32 modified by hpa versus the Ferrari Enzo -- the two cars had surprisingly similar performance. I have toyed with the idea of going ahead with an hpa r32.... its a supercar killer, and from what i have read, very reliable
Definitely not in stock trim. Maybe not even modified.
Comparing the R32 to the EVO & STI is really an Apples & Oranges kind of thing.
EVO & STI are oriented towards performance. The R32 doesn't seem to be built for any one specific purpose. It does a little of this; a little of that; and a little something else, but doesn't really excel in any one category.
