One the engine is running, the clutch pedal is back to normal except it dosn't feel as smooth - it feels like it's faintly grinding (it was perfectly smooth before this happenned).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Greetings, salutations and a happy new year to all. First post here. My '03 996 TT has about 20K miles on it and today while driving, all of a sudden, the clutch pedal got really stiff, felt like I lost hydraulic assistance for a moment. After a couple of pumps, it got back to normal except it felt a bit "grindy". I stopped somewhere, turned the engine off and removed the key from the ignition. Then I re-inserted the key in the ignition and stepped on the clutch pedal in order to start the car. The clutch pedal was really really stiff with the engine off, I really had to press hard to get it depressed so I can crank up the engine. One the engine is running, the clutch pedal is back to normal except it dosn't feel as smooth - it feels like it's faintly grinding (it was perfectly smooth before this happenned). The car shifts OK but something is not quite right. Any ideas would be highly appreciated before I talk to the dealership. The car is all stock. Thanks in advance.

POST 2Original post

Could be the clutch slave cylinder gone bad, anything else is big money as it would be internal like a throw out bearing. With the car not running, when you step on the clutch pedal do you hear like a metal stretching sound?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No metal sound of any kind when I step on the pedal with the car off, just a rubbery squeak which doesn't sound all too unusual.

POST 4Original post

Let's hope it is just the clutch slave cylinder gone bad. Prior to this did you do any hard launches?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Let's hope so!!! No hard launches at all, just regular driving in-town and all of a sudden it got stiff on me while driving. I do have a Porsche CPO warranty on the car so fortunately it's something covered. Thanks for replies Robin.

POST 6Original post

Failing slave and master cylinders generally result in a very light and ineffective pedal. The only way a non-boosted (meaning vacuum, or hydraulic, boost as in a typical modern brake circuit) clutch circuit will have a stiff pedal is if there is something wrong with the clutch mechanicals to increase the effort - throwout bearing jammed on clutch bits, etc.

POST 7Original post

One thing I can say is that when my clutch failed, the effort suddenly got really easy.. as soon as the clutch started slipping. When the clutch was fixed, it was still soft, so it was actually not normal for it to have been so stiff (only had the car since May). I can only guess the pressure disk springs were strain hardened, but I don't see how it could have gotten suddenly easy. My guess for you is stiff=bad, but I don't know why.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ended up being the clutch accumulator ball. I got stiffed by the Porsche dealer for $475 (I later found out an independent shop that would've done it for $315 but it was too late). The Porsche CPO unfortunately didn't cover it.

POST 9Original post

Which raises the question of just what is covered by the CPO?

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This site describes what's covered under the CPO. Ironically, had it been the slave cylinder like we initially thought, it would've been covered! http://porschecertified.com/
