Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok, I am thinking about selling the 996 and getting something different. The reason for my absence is I am trying to build a 97 M3 track car. Thought about a Porsche but the cost were too much to maintain as a track car and I bought the M3 for cheap. Anyways, I am thinking of going with one of the following. E46 (2004/05) M3 Coupe, 993 TT (1996) or a C4S Coupe. Swaying to stay in the Porsche family, but I have driven a friends E46 M3 and its fun.... After looking for E36 M3 parts for the track car, I have come across a lot of E46 M3parts also. The performance parts are soooo much more reasonably priced and accessible than for Porsches.

POST 2Original post

After owning a problematic E46 M3 track car, I'll tell you....there is a lot more to it. And...a lot you have to do to it to keep it reliable. and...FWIW, the e46 m3 is almost as expensive as the 996. Example: VANOS unit is a potential achilles heel. My car had this problem. The part price alone was almost $3000. FYI... C.

POST 3Original post

If you can find a C4S Coupe with an X51 motor (started in 03), you can get it up to 400 HP for about $6K and race it all year without a lot of fuss. But a 96 TT comes with 400 stock HP and feels better on dry track, unless you add the European M030 and stuff 335/30/18's under the 996.

POST 4Original post

1996 993 turbo (at least one that does not need a lot of work) will start at 60K so that is not a low-cost option...

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I guess I should clarify, I do not plan on tracking this car. It would replace my daily driver 996 C2. I am just undecided on a E46 M3, 996 C4S, or 993 TT.

There may be something to be said for keeping it in the family. If you're tracking an E36 and driving an E46, are there any economies of scale? As a dual-marque owner, I have trouble keeping up with Porsche and BMW reading and learning, so I like the idea of being monogamous.
