My PSE was manufactured by Eisenmann Germany and was installed sans electronics.

But, I just had both mufflers replaced because something inside each of them was broken/loose.

Mine is still at the dealers w/ the PSE being replaced due to the same problem.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I know there are stories of "rattles" coming from PSE mufflers with faulty internals requiring replacement of the unit.
My PSE was manufactured by Eisenmann Germany and was installed sans electronics.
A rattle has developed from the left rear of the car... it could be the muff or perhaps a bad cat.
How many of you have had to have a PSE muffler replaced?
Curious George
oilchanger,
Was it something inside the muffler? Or perhaps a crack in the external housing?
My setup is relatively new and has only been tracked one time. We'll see what the shop has to say...
I don't believe it was anything external like a crack. Wasn't sure what the rattle was, so it ruined my track day. Didn't want to risk frying the engine. How long has yours been on the car?
I have had the PSE on for a couple of months now. I love the sound... and lack of resonance. It's awesome.
However, if the muff is at fault, that would be quite a disappointment considering that it is a factory part at the wonderful factory
price!
Never mind. they fixed the clamp and they hear another noise coming from inside the muffler. They'll have to get a replacement from Germany........

FWIW, I don't have PSE. I have the standard stock exhaust. But, I just had both mufflers replaced because something inside each of them was broken/loose. I was told it is a regular problem with these. I have a 2002 C2 Coupe with 70,000 miles.
b-man
I quote from Porsche's own advertising blurb (The 911)...
"The exhaust system, for example, is made of pure stainless steel which means it cannot corrode and will therefore last the lifetime of the car"
Total *****. Both of my rear silencer boxes failed like b-mans, under warranty, and Porsche refused to replace them.
I bought two second-hand boxes from an after-market tuner who had a shed full of them. Both nearly new with the latest flexi-joint on the inlet pipe. 1/4 of OPC's price. Need I write more?
Was the rattle at startup, low RPM's or throughout the rev range. I just bought a 99 C4 and I am trying to track down what seems to be a rattle. It's only at low RPM's. Not sure if it's a rattle or just a cheap sounding exhaust. Under acceleration its much less prominent.
Newport996 - mine rattled at tick-over with the air-con off. Switching the air-con on causes the revs to rise just enough to stop the dreaded death rattle.
The rattles also go if you put a foot over the exhaust. Rubber soles not recommended!
The newer type boxes with the bellows connectors are a lot quieter and there seems to be less resonance. Now that might be either a good or a bad thing?
NOT. Hahaha
Hmmm... the rattle is still present, but only on throttle at cold startup. After things warm up, the rattle disappears.
Yep. Like magic.
Does this sound consistent with a bad cat? Meaning, the rattles disappear after things heat up?
Those are exactly my symptoms. My dealers thought it was a bad clamp too. Ended up being a bad muffler on the PSE. One is on the way from Germany. I would have your dealer look at the muffler again.
