Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

22 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everyone, I recently purchased a 2002 996 with 55k miles. I am in love with the car and how fun everything related to being a Porsche enthusiast is! However, I have been driving from and to the shop for the last three weeks. Both my local authorized Porsche dealer and my technician haven't been able to find anything serious with the car, however, the check engine light and a "drive to shop" message keep reappearing on the dashboard. My professional technician suggested I chat with you guys (serious enthusiasts) and ask if I should take a loss and trade it for a newer version (2005 and newer) before I get into real trouble. Does anybody know in average at what millage do 996 begin showing serious issues? Would you kindly share your comments. Thanks in advance!

POST 2Original post

Man, that's a loaded question. Just see my thread here on my 2004 C4S cab just turned 100,000 miles and I put all of those miles on the car. I seriously don't think a 2002 with 55k miles has been driven enough - could this be the issue? I doubt it. I also doubt that the computer can't tell them why the check engine light is coming on... take it to a better mechanic. Either way, find out what's "wrong" with the car before you just dump it and take a beating, only to have the car have nothing serious and the dealership is laughing all the way to the bank. Good luck, Rob

POST 5Original post

Check with another dealer or indy. Sounds like they want you to trade. Issues generally appear with these cars at around 30k-45k miles and these are usually things like MAF, cracked coolant tank, oil leaks (rms, ims) AOS and the like. Once these are addressed, often the car's good to go for way over 100k miles.

POST 6Original post

Don't let this turn into a IMS rag thread.......

POST 7Original post

Dealer wants to sell him a 2005 with profit, then turn off light, fix problem and sell this car for another profit. The lights are triggered by the computer. Something smells fishy to me. But then I am a cynic when it comes to most dealers.

POST 8Original post

Holy Sh@#,It actually has never occurred to me to drove to the dealer when the car says so. Go to autozone and have them scan it for free.

POST 9Original post

sell the car? Thats silly, how about fix the car!

POST 11Original post

You can: 1. Trade it in for a leftover 09 997; as long as the dealer will give you 40K trade in...and don't forget to knock 20K off the 997 sticker. 2. Get a second opinion from a recommended indi... (996's are overrated)...lol

POST 12Original post

Do you have any idea how bad it would have to be before fixing it was more expensive than selling it? I'm afraid you're being had, based on the evidence presented. Two things: First of all, although every car has its faults, I can tell you that a 996 'lemon' is a very, very rare thing. I don't think I've ever heard of anybody who's had a 'one thing after another' experience with one. Something might be wrong, but it's a safe bet that everything isn't wrong. (If you were talking about a Range Rover, say, I'd tell you otherwise... those suckers will never stop hoovering out your wallet until you put a bullet in the engine block and dump it in a river). Second, don't ever go to that shop again. At the very least, they don't know what they're talking about. At the worst, they are taking you for a fool and already counting your money. GL.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks to all for your input (even the ironic ones!!). I've learned a lot these past weeks. I have never been a true fan of mechanics (even though I love to drive) but I guess that the passion I'm getting for this car will push me to learn stuff I had never before considered. One thing is for sure, the next car I buy will definitely be a Porsche...hopefully a Carrera 4S!! Speaking of driving, I'd appreciate your feedback on racing this cars in a closed circuit. Thanks again.

POST 14Original post

Buy a durametric then you can always see what's up. I don't think there are any guys making 6 figures or more that are drug addicts that would straight face lie to man. Well yah sure there are but eh. If you are going to race the car then a fancy code reader with real time data like the durametric reader offers would be a good way to go.

I'd be interested in buying...looking for 2002+ 911. I had a 997 as DD but sold and picked up 4 door. Now looking for 996. Email me with some photos and what you would want to sell for: [email removed]

POST 19Original post

Sell it. Your question reflects, I think, a loss of confidence/trust in the car. There's no reason for anyone to drive any car they can't have confidence in or trust.

GW I'm going to drive the hell out of this car for the next 50k miles...if it brakes...it brakes... if not, then I'll see what to do next!

So is it the dealership and porsche dealership didn't say what the check engine light was from? If they didn't I'm sure everybody would like to know who the repair shop and the dealership are. It's a custom for new guys to post pictures of their car. Any other excuse is good too like you had a good cruise.
