Mike(I don't think you need to replace wires but try spark plug first).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just came home from a weekend trip to panama city beach florida. Drove great 4 hours on the way home. My wife got out to move my car out of the garage so I put put our silver 1999 996 c2 cabriolet back in her spot and while sitting there the car began to run awful. Like it was running on 3 cylinders. No poping, just a lot of sputtering. We unpacked, and I came back a few minutes later (15 mins or so) and started her up, same thing, Took her up the driveway and the light began to flash before reaching the road. The thing is sputtering like crazy. Great oil pressure, good temp, good voltage. My two guesses are a burnt plug wire/bad plug (s), or an instantly stopped up cat converter?????
Any guesses, Any tricks to reading the codes my self by jumping a wire or anything? CAN IT BE DRIVEN TO TEH MECHANIC WITH A FLASHING CHECK ENGINE LIGHT?
PLEASE any help will be so much appreciated.

That had happened to me sounds like you have a ignition coil needing replacement. Once got done replaced two coils(forgot which cylinders) and it was gone. Hope that is just it-not a big problem if this is the case. Regards. Mike
like AC 996C2 said, do not ever drive any car with the check engine light flashing. this indicates a SERIOUS problem. when it's on steady it's ok to drive it.
I bought a $152.00 scan tool today to see if it may isolate the issue. I don't have a
competent mechanic with 100 miles of me here in columbus georgia so i am going to
try and at least diagnose the problem. Will keep you posted and thanks for the
replies already posted and any in the future that may help me.
George
Update,,, I have identified with the scan tool that it is a misfire on cylinder #5. I guess I am going to start with plugs, then the # 5 coil pack, then a set of wires??? Is the the correct order to troubleshoot? Any suggestions? I wish there was a competent mechanic in my town.
That sounds about right. Good luck. Mike(I don't think you need to replace wires but try spark plug first). You may want to check Loren's tech website on changing sparkplugs if your a DIY kinda guy. I believe it's Renntech.com(?).
