Suggestion

At this point they will need to use some sort of brake caliper compression tool to spread the pads open a little to clear the lid on the rotor that's created by normal wear

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm a new owner ('99 Carrera) The brakes were rumbling a little when I brought it, so I got some new brake pads as part of the deal. Question is: can I pop around to Midas/Jiffy Lube to get them installed or do I need to head to a Porsche shop to get it done 'right'. Dammad. PS: Everything is stock, so nothing special here.

POST 2Original post

Porsche "brembo" brake design are actually very easily for pad change compared to most passenger cars out there. But they will need to know exactly how to do it and make sure they use the right oem pads, and make sure the rotor thickness are still within spec. And also to make sure when they compress the caliper pistons back that they don't damage the painted calipers. (For cosmetic reasons) Here is a quick run down of the removal procedure. (1). Pull out the carter pin (2). Punch the drift pin out that holds the brake pads holders (3). Remove the brake pad wear sensor wire from it's plug location (4). At this point they will need to use some sort of brake caliper compression tool to spread the pads open a little to clear the lid on the rotor that's created by normal wear (5). Use a knife or a flat dry wall knife to wedge into the back of the brake pad to separate the pads from the anti squeal shim piece. (6). Remove the pad (7). Remove the brake pad wear sensor (carefully, as it breaks easily)

POST 3Original post

As long as you are using OEM parts and the rotors are still in factory spec and as long as they don't do something stupid like tear the boot on the brake piston (but this isn't special to Porsche, it's universal so they'd have to be real stupid to do that), then it's fine.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The place I took it to is looking to change the discs also. Any idea how long discs should last (normal driving)? Any idea how much wear should be left when you change?

POST 5Original post

The minimum thickness spec is 26mm in the front and 22mm in the rear (yes you do need calipers to measure this...it's only 2mm of wear btw). Again, make sure to use OEM parts, do not use the pads and rotors that midas uses.

POST 6Original post

Yeah, stay away from non-OEM stuff. My friend had non-OEM brake pads on his boxster and the brakes squeeled like hell after some time. We had it changed to OEM ones back in 3 days. Let us know how the installation went. Also, if I'm not mistakened, there is a DIY for this on renntech.org .. to change the brake rotors. Check it out.

POST 7Original post

We need more info to give you a better answer on the rotors. As for the pads DIY, it is one of the easiest things to do on a Porsche! My guess is that you do NOT need to rotors. But........around here you first post should be an intro and of course the obligatory pics of the car! ps. forgot to say. Do NOT take your car to midas or the such. Find yourself a good indy in the area if you do not want to DIY this.

POST 8Original post

Do it yourself. It's pretty easy. Otherwise, take it to a indept. If you take it to a crappy shop like Midas or Pep Boys, they'll try to rip you off by upselling you some service or parts which are inferior. They may scratch your rim or over tighten the wheel bolt. I'd not let anyone that gets paid $25/hr touch my car.

POST 9Original post

Exactly, just bite the bullet, learn how to do it, it's actually very easy. The rotors are a peice of cake too.
