I've never heard anything about being able to change the rear end ring and pinion on a 996.
Leading evidence: 'Replace rear end ring and pinion' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace rear end ring and pinion' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've never heard anything about being able to change the rear end ring and pinion on a 996. Is it even possible? Would there be much benefit in a 996? Thinking back to my teenage years with 60's muscle-cars, I know the rear end gear ratio seemed to make quite a bit of difference in acceleration, but you would sacrifice top end speed. I know these cars a set up for top speed and not drag racing, but I don't seem to need the top speed capabilities of this car as much as acceleration. Would a lower gear ratio help out 0-60 times or 0-100 times? I would be willing to give up 10-20mph or so of top speed for an extra half second off 1/4 mile time. I realize the speedometer would have to be re-calibrated, but would there be other issues? Would this even work, or am I nuts?
Thanks for the info- it re-directed me to another site and I called them, and they said they don't change out the rear end ratio, but they do re-gear 3rd-6th gear to lower ratios. It's about half the cost of a SC, but won't do anything for 0-60 times, since they don't do 1st or 2nd gear. He couldn't give me specifics but said it would help acceleration from 3rd and up, and make 5th and 6th more usable if you track the car. It's a lot bigger job and more money than I was expecting though. Maybe I should just start looking for a used turbo in the next year or so.
When you start adding horsepower to the stock 996, the 1st and 2nd gears become more and more a problem. They are to low and IMO, the only mod the drivetrain needs is a taller 1st and 2nd gear. Final gear ratio is fine.
