I use the OEM, so I can't really comment, but it's been cold as a mother in the northeast and my shifting has been smooth smooth smooth.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What a great day, First I install the SSK, then Redskins crush Dallas..... Ordered from Brandywine, it took 2 days to get. Installation was clean and simple. I do however have mixed feelings on the SSK. It feels really clunky at times, and smoother at others. Sometimes it just clicks right in place, sometimes I feel like Im pushing it harder into a gear( but it is cold outside). I was reading that the shift get looser or breaks in after a little while. I am hoping for a slightly smoother feeling. Or maybe I will just get used to it... While the effort is increased, it gives you a more involved feeling changing gears. It's one of those mods that gives you the true feeling of the car.

POST 2Original post

congrats... I've notice on cold days the shifting requires alittle more work.. The delay shifting technique seems to work for me but I dont shift all that fast to begin with.

POST 3Original post

I use the OEM, so I can't really comment, but it's been cold as a mother in the northeast and my shifting has been smooth smooth smooth. However, I have heard that people mention the B&M gets a little smoother has time goes by. Be a little patient. By the way, on install, you marked all the cable positions correctly as per the instructions, right? (That's step 16 in the instructions linked to by clicking here ). That's the beauty of the OEM product, the plastic housing doesn't require that you do so. Then again, my authorized service tech did the install and it's flawless.

POST 4Original post

Mine has been smooth since day 1...never even notchey. I had mine installed and I think there are some adjustments that can be made during install.

POST 6Original post

Getting a SSK for christmas, impatiently waiting...

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

HAHAHAH, that was a good one but u can't touch my skins 2day

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I did mine from the B&M black and white instructions sent with the kit. It was hard for me to tell how I was supposed to mark the cables from the junk pics. I guess I marked them wrong? Should I adjust to see if that works better?

POST 9Original post

Once you have swapped out the shifter, it's going to take some trial and error to get the cables the way you want them for smoother shifting. Though my experience there is nil, wait around a bit and some of the regular pros on the forum will surely chime in and help you get it right. Or if you're a little antsy, you can try some searches in the 996 forum; as I recall, a number of people have spoken about this in the past. Try using "B&M mark" and see what turns up.

POST 10Original post

Check renntech.org, there has always been a lot of info there on SSKs.

POST 11Original post

Don't even bother marking the cables, just unsnap the shift cable at the tower, then snap them on the new shifter. Same tech for both BM/OEM. The only difference on some of the later oem units which were sold in the plastic housing with plastic bushings, don't require any play adjustments, while the earlier retrofit oem and BM do require a little adjusting. Very easy.

POST 12Original post

Do you have different travel (distance and ease) in the top gear (1,3,5) than you do in the bottom gears (2,4,6)??? If so, then you can adjust the cables. What about reverse?

POST 13Original post

Did you tighten down the allen screw a little too far? If that is a little too tight, then the shifter will feel a little notchy sometimes. As was mentioned the cables might need to be adjusted slightly, but usually they are pretty good as long as you got them back in somewhat close to where they came out.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the suggestions so far, I think I did tighten the allen screw 2 much. I marked the cables, but I marked them the wrong way since I really could not see the marking spots on the black and white instruction sheet I had. However, I could see kinda where they went before and I thought I had placed them in the right positions. I will try and loosen the allen today, I will probably do it at lunch time since this is starting to annoy me.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's done. Adjusted the allen screw and the cables. Drove around for a few miles. Perfect!

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

At first I adjusted the screw and placed the shift **** back on to test the feeling, still felt off. I took the cable heads off and if you look really close, you can see where the screw used to be. Placed the cables back in the original spots and the shifting became instantly smoother. Then I loosened the allen screw all the way, adjusted it to secure the shifter in place, and tightened it 1/4 turn past that point.(maybe less) Resulted in smoother, more defined feeling when changing gears. All the notchy gear mashing feeling is gone. I really like how this kit feels now.
