Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The Cherokee is used when it is really nasty because I really dont care what happens with that.

Suggestion
It's not like Porsche is using some sort of magical mechanism here that disintegrates when the temperature drops below 50 degrees F.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Actually, the roads should be clear, but it will be about 10 Deg. I want to drive it through the winter when slush and salt are not on the streets. I guess that I am from the school of thought that daily drivers are always more reliable than garage queens. I hate letting my car sit. Maybe my thought is a hold-over from my 928 days when the worst thing you could do is let the cars sit. If you drive the car regularly, it runs great. Let the car sit, and problems just seem to multiply. Anyone else feel the same way or am I just a lunatic? If you chose lunatic, my wife would likely agree with you.
Nah...not lunacy...more like love. Drive your car and enjoy it! The problems associated with sitting cars are usually said about older cars...but still...drive your car...it will thank you for it.
Drive Safely,
Dude, if you have winter tires on the car, it is not different than driving any other vehicle unless there are heaps (read, feet) of snow on the road. I mean, we're talking about an engine here. It's not like Porsche is using some sort of magical mechanism here that disintegrates when the temperature drops below 50 degrees F.
I do disagree with you about the snow though. In Ohio, when there is snow on the raods they spread a liquid salt that is more concentrated than rock salt. I cannot believe that stuff does anything beneficial to the undercarriage of the car. Anyway, days like that are why I have a V8 VW Touareg and a Jeep Cherokee. The Cherokee is used when it is really nasty because I really dont care what happens with that.
I can't believe that the undercarriage on a Porsche is inferior to that on a Toyota. I see lots of Toyotas on the parking lot where I work that are at least 15 years old and were driven in the snow every year. So if the salt didn't hurt the Toyotas, I doubt that they will hurt the Porsches.
Do the math like I did. At one point, I kept a second car for snow/rain/dust/toosunny/notsunnyenough days. Now being a Porsche guy, I wasn't about to drive a piece of crap when I wasn't in the Pcar so I had another 30Ktied up, plus insurance, plus maintenence plus depreciation every year. If I drive the 996 for 3 years and the car depreciates 5K per year, I am still ahead of the game.
PLUS, I GET TO DRIVE A FREAKIN' 911 EVERY DAY OF MY LIFE!!!!!!
Wash the car regularly in the winter (just as I do in the summer) and you'll be fine. Unless you intend to keep your car as a collectible, in which case why are you driving it at all, then just drive it and enjoy it.
I agree with TCR's math. Last winter I drove an old Mercedes (1992) and I hated it. This winter I'm about to slp some winter tire and enjoy it. In the mean time I drive the farm pickup and can't complain that it's not a nice car...'cause it's a pickup.
My newfound goal in life is to have more milleage than Pierre with his TT in Switzerland...haven't heard from him but he must be at 250,000 Km..at least..
The only problem with driving these cars in the winter is the damage you do to your engine everytime you start it. With the temperature near or below freezing, your engine takes a beating when you start it.
Dude, I love Toronto. My father's whole side of the family is from up there. Indeed, my grandparents still live on Bay and Bloor. Rock on fellow Canuck!
Thats pretty funny - we have a Jeep Cherokee with 250k miles on it that I use for exactly the same purpose. Maybe its a requirement of the ZB 996 owners club
Don't worry it does get cold in Germany too.
The best way to save your engine is to led it idle for no more than 1 minute. Drive it slowly and keeps the revs under 3,000k until it warms up. If the gear action is stiff I recommend double-clutching...makes things easier.
Welcome back....just in time for our wounderfull election.
