Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

A quick vacuuming with a brush attachment while holding the switch in the open position solved the problem forever.
There are two switches along the bottom of the drivers' side door opening. The one towards the front pops open the trunk (storage in the front of the car), the one towards the rear of the car pops open the hood (engine in the back of the car).
The former is being troublesome. I use the trunk frequently to store my gymbag. I noticed a few weeks ago it wouldn't open sometimes. I figured it must be a door open/shut or key in/out of ignition issue so I played with it and after I hit it once or twice more it would pop the trunk open.
Recently it's gotten much worse and I realized the problem is with the switch. If I jiggle it many times, it'll open.
Bad motor, rusty parts, ?
Mine was doing the opposite; causing the frunk to pop open randomly. It usually would happen on acceleration and deceleration. Turned out to be a bit of grit that would roll under the switch contact and trip it. A quick vacuuming with a brush attachment while holding the switch in the open position solved the problem forever. Obviously your problem is different, but hese switches are pretty finicky. Try vacuuming and then spray a little bit of electrical contact cleaner (available at Radio Shack) and see if that helps.
I blasted the area with dust remover spray, I take it the "electrical contact cleaner" you mentioned is a different animal? No joy.
I figured it might be the fuse so I bought fuses. Recently the weather warmed up and it popped open on the first try (without yet replacing the fuse).
So if it's not the fuse and the temperature affects it, hmm ...
I dont think the temps could effect it. Just maybe you DID loosen some grit around the toggle and now its OK. If the problem comes again then take the switch out and check the wiring at the back. Maybe spray some contact cleaner on it then.
Had mine replaced under warranty. The switches hate moisture and can corrode easily. There is thread in here somewhere on replacing this switch.

The switch is easy to get to if you need to remove it. I'd try some electrical cleaner first, though. It's about $4 a can and you just spray the switch with it and then dry the area with a towel. It's also good to have around in case you actually use the drink holder in the dash and something sticky drips on the radio/HVAC controls.
I first sprayed dust remover, waited a few hours, tried it, no joy.
Then I sprayed electrical contact cleaner, waited a few hours, tried it, no joy.
I am thinking about replacing the switch but cannot figure out how to get the plastic cover area loose and I don't want to use brute force.
Any ideas on how to properly loosed the cover?
