Thanks......powder coating is a process like electrostatic painting except a powder is used instead of a liquid paint.
Leading evidence: 'Use instead of a liquid paint' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean inside of my wheels so they're dirty' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. I like the idea of the black inside because I don't always have time to clean the inside of my wheels so they're dirty with brake dust anyway.

You can always change the color if you get tired of it.

If you want to change things up a bit, I'd go with a dark silver.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm thinking about refinishing my 18" turbo-look wheels to repair some road rash. I'm thinking of all black, or perhaps a combination of the standard silver, with black on the inside only.
I love the look of the silver/black combination of
this type of wheel
, with the added bonus of not having to be too precise cleaning.
Below is a shot of the current wheel, and a bad photoshop of the same wheel with black interior.
Thoughts?
I like the idea of the black inside because I don't always have time to clean the inside of my wheels so they're dirty with brake dust anyway. A black inside would work perfectly.
If not black then maybe a pewter or dark grey finish to make the contrast not so apparent.
Maybe a darker grey would be okay. I think the black is too dark and may just look dirty from a distance. I just painted mine same color inside and out and I wish I gave the inside more coats of clear so the finish was smoother. The less smooth inside of rim gives the brake dust a surface to "grab" onto which causes faster build up.
If you are are looking for something more aggressive I'd consider gunmetal. My friend's dark blue M3 looks sooo nice with gunmetal wheels.
Cowhorn why no black? Black changes the whole attitude of the car. Not for everyone but it works surprisingly well on some pcars, especially against Iris blue. You can always change the color if you get tired of it.
Personally, I really dislike black wheels. Especially on a blue car. They make nice wheels look cheap and/or hide all of the details of the wheel design. If you want to change things up a bit, I'd go with a dark silver.
Painting the inside black is an interesting idea. I wonder if there are any real pics of cars with this done out there? I bet it would work pretty well to hide the brake dust buildup. I always clean the insides of mine and they get the worst buildup in that area.
I like the black Turbo Twists with any color car. There is a Lapis Blue 996 Cab down the street that had Black TTs, and it look great
The owner didn't like them as much as I did and changed them for some very nice IForge silver wheels
Everyone has individual taste
I like the idea of painting them, however, I would go for an airbrush look and give the wheel some debth on the peaks of the spokes. A high gloss black base with gold or silver air brush highlights. Then a few coats of clear over the whole thing.
Hardback, if you got your hollow spokes for 500, then you got a deal. I looked for months and ended up with 2 sets, but they were much more than that.
Things are always expensive when you need something, but when you don't need them you can find a deal.
By the way, my wheels are always for sale, as I have a basement full (my wife says). The wheels in the pic above even come with a good set of Sumi III's if anyone is interested.
I have a dark blue 996 with black twist wheels, and I like the look. The PO had them painted black, and I like not having to clean them all the time. I get a lot of comments on them. Younger people (under 45 or so) tend to like them, and over 45 seem to prefer traditional silver/gray, but to each their own. I'm in the first category, and think they look great, and make the car a little different than other 996's. My .02.
I'm over 45, so I say keep it silver, or, darker grey/gun metal (that M3 looks sweet). Black is too dark for me, and black inside will just look like stock rims from 10 feet away, so why bother?
Or use the plasti dip stuff (

) for a pretty nice look. I'm thinking of doing my speed yellow 996ttx50 with black turbo twists. Cheap to do, and reversible procedure.
Very nice! Did you have them powder coat the center caps too? I always worry about powder coating the rims and never being able to match the center caps!
Thanks......powder coating is a process like electrostatic painting except a powder is used instead of a liquid paint. The curing process is heat and a alot of it. So no, the center caps are not powdered because they are plastic and 1) electricity does not flow thru plastic to good and 2) the caps would have melted. I went to a Autozone and got some spray paint that I thought gave it a little contrast.
In trying to match something is it better to be little off or be way off to a point where it looks planned? I knew I could not match the two so I went with a darker color on the caps on purpose otherwise it could / would look like a mistake.
Given the choices of color at Dipyourcar's plasti-dip, why wouldn't you do each spoke a different color, and then spin the wheels really, really fast, causing small children and pets to throw up whenever you roll by?

Sorry; couldn't resist. That Monster Green/Hot Pink combo was too tempting.
I like stock silver. Go with what you like.
I agree that all black wheels on a dark blue (or any dark color) is a bit much and I love black wheels.
I bet gun metal on the entire wheel would look great though.
After looking at a hilarious thread over at 6speed on a guy who is plasti-dipping his entire Porsche Turbo (thread is named "Plastidipping my whole car!!!! "), I am kind of thinking of doing my turbo twist rims in matte black Plasti-Dip. I think it looks pretty good and seems idiot-proof in application - plus is totally and easily reversible; you just peel it off if you get tired of it. Has anyone here done this on a Porsche??
Pete, how did you select your "gunmetal " gray ?- take a paint chip to the company doing the powder coating ? Select from a standard range of colors offered by the powder coater ? I have a Seal Gray 4S but it has the polished TT wheels which is a bit too much bling for me and was thinking about having them painted vs buying new wheels - yours look pretty good and the price is right . Did you have them put a several coats of clear powder over the gunmetal to make them shine like that ?
Dave
I haven't, but I'm seriously considering doing that, too. I might try the technique where the guy plastidips his wheels while on the car. Just need to cover the rotors and calipers.
I like the fact that it's reversible. Let me know if you get to yours before I do. And take pics! I have a yellow/black 996ttx50 cabrio.
