I spoke to some who ran a K&N for 270,000 miles on their 964, and they are still running strong.
Leading evidence: 'Run k&n' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean put it back and drive' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. I would like to know when most of you replace your engine air filter??

Suggestion
As for when you should change your filter, I suggest that at 16K it's probably a bit early unless you live in a very dusty/dirty environment or you are incredibly ****-retentive.

Suggestion
Depends on your local driving conditions, but as I drive in CA and AZ, I assume there's going to be a considerable amount of fine sand/dust/ash, hence the filter needs changing more regularly than std.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

cdodkin,
MAF stands for mass air flow sensor?? So no K&N are you usning factory??? When do you replace your air filter?? I am thinking of replacing my since I am reaching 16K miles
thanks
I don't know (and I doubt that it's true) if K&N filters,
properly oiled
, will mess up the MAF. What I do know, is that K&N is mostly hype and you shouldn't waste your money on them.
As for when you should change your filter, I suggest that at 16K it's probably a bit early unless you live in a very dusty/dirty environment or you are incredibly ****-retentive. To put your mind at ease, remove the existing filter and look at it. If it looks dirty, replace it. If it looks clean, put it back and drive for another 16K miles,
then
replace it.
Michael
i would just buy the cone filters that dont require oiling and just completely replace them when the time comes.
from all i've read there is no performace gain w/cones.
the engines supposedly sounds nicer though.
Yes MAF is Mass Air Flow sensor.
On Porsche, and other vehicles, there is considerable evidence that the oil from K&N style filters leads to problems with the MAF.
I use Porsche factory when I replace.
I have 30K miles and I am replacing my air filter with a BMC Filter which they use in some the GT Cup cars. They are high quality and I have only heard good things about them. They are supposed to increase the HP a bit, we will see about that though.
Just remember guys, as you get that "claimed" hp bump from the other filters it is b/c you are getting more air through the filter. But with that increased air comes increased non-air pollutants into the engine since the larger "pores" of the free breathing filters allow more through. It's all a trade off, it just depends on what it is worth to you.
15k filter change for me, with factory stock.
Depends on your local driving conditions, but as I drive in CA and AZ, I assume there's going to be a considerable amount of fine sand/dust/ash, hence the filter needs changing more regularly than std.
I also use a vacuum cleaner to suck-up the dust I get in the air box before fitting the new filter.
The factory interval is 30K for an air filter unless the car is used in harsh or extremely dusty environments. I replace at 30K and have never had a problem.
There is no advantage to using the "miracle" air filters, except to lighten your wallet. The aftermarket filters that use oil are well documented about the problems that can be caused with contamination of the MAF.
Sorry, no free HP waiting to be released with a trick air filter.
there is evidence that K&N filters do increase air flow because the pores are larger, there is also evidence that these filters let more dust particles inside your engine. This will increase wear in the engine components. That is why they recomend to use oil in these filters, to try to trap some of these particles, if you dont use the oil, you basically are letting a larger amount of contaminants inside your engine..
In my opinion is not worth it..
I stick with the stock. I drive all year and with all the dirt on the roads, not worth the particulates to me. BTW, ever hold up a stock filter to your mouth(clean one) and try breathing throught it? It is not that restrictive.
I wouldnt put a K&N on my lawnmower, seen plenty of motors with accelerated cylinder wall (and superchargers) scuffing using K&N. Paper may cost a little bit of power but it wont ever cost you your motor.
Used to live in a place with a hard core p-car shop...many places have them. This place dyno'ed several cars with K&N and stock..On the stock filter, they had to tape up about 70%+ of it before it dropped off in performance.
Their take: the stock unit takes in way more air until dirty than the engine can handle. They saw no improvement with the K&N, felt the newer K&N units were not of the quality the old ones were, and had seen a few oil on the MAF "oops" users...so they said, stay stock and just change it more often than stock if you want "more air."
What I have done. I am happy, it costs about the same as K&N to change every 15k, and I don't have to worry about dirt/MAF issues.
To each his own. I am happy. My car is way too powerful anyway. :-)
Porsche engineers things well very, and they would rarely leave out the air filter as part of the overall package design. I'm a bit of a purist, so I would content to leave the stock air filter in place and change it regularly.
If you do, however, decide to go K&N, I doubt that you will affect the overall life expectancy of the engine unless you drive in dusty conditions. I spoke to some who ran a K&N for 270,000 miles on their 964, and they are still running strong.
if you have a K&N make sure you inspect it at *least* once a year and that it is pink in color everywhere (very important to note color on the filter) (this shows there is still oil on it) and when it does come time to clean and re-oil it make sure you oil the bottom only and *NOT* the top ... also stand it on its side over some newspapers so the excess oil can drain... let it sit for one night then flip it on the other side standing up so all the oil can drip out... I usually keep it out of the car for 2 nights just to make sure there isn't a trace of oil that can get sucked into the engine... no problems so far... no cel no maf issues...
I've had my k and n panel filter in my car for the past 7 months, will no problems. I have re-oiled once, and was very careful (it was not that dirty after 7k miles, but I cleaned it just for good measure). It may not actually make my car any faster, but its nice that I can keep reusing it, and I don't think the oil will cause a problem if used properly. good luck.
Have been using a K&N Aircharger on an 02 996 C2 for over a year every day and have not seen any MAF issues. Car has been drag raced several times and survived 25 plus laps at Sebring. Also driven in the rain. (No garage queen.)
Been waiting to see if any MAF issues arose, but nothing to date. Also cleaned out the intake the other week checking out the throttle body, but MAF was spic and span.

The panel flows way more than the motor needs, just look at the bottom side. Only 1/3 of the panel appears used or dirty.
I bought my car at 55k miles and now have 96k miles, I havent replaced the filter yet, just beat out the dust and still get mid-20 MPG's.
