Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The check engine light came on in my 996 last week but it seemed to still run fine. I took it into one of the local dealers and they called and said that that the code indicated a vario cam actuator problem. Bam 2400.00 bucks. They tell me they will have the car back in a couple of days. 4 days go by and they don't call me. So I call them and they now say there is another problem. The DME is fried. Bam another 2400.00 bucks. The car was running fine when i brought it in and now a 4800.00 bill ? Their explanation is that the bad DME caused the actuator to fail and when they put the new actuator in the DME wouldn't communicate. If the DME was bad before i brought the car in wouldn't the car not have run ? Wouldn't they have gotten a code when they diagnosed it originally that the DME was bad ? I am not a wrench and would appreciate any input anyone has regarding this situation. __________________

cel are usually triggered by fault codes. It pays to have a scanner. At least you can verify codes and if you cant fix the problem, you can at least have an idea if the stealers are actually trying to rip you off. Especially since you drove it with a cel and rides fine. If the DME is fried, I would expect that the car would run pretty bad. What dealer is this BTW... $4800 seems like alot of money. My .02 cents and GL
