Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I use 1 gallon of 100 Octane to every 3 gallons of 91 and it does make a difference.

Suggestion
It automatically gauges the RON at startup when the car first fires, sensing the octane and adjusting the timing READ retarding it for 91, accordingly.
Leading evidence: 'Use 1 gallon of 100 octane' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust timing read retarding it' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I thought maybe it needed time to tune itself, so I filled the tank again when it was half full and did some more spirited runs though my favorite twisty roads.

Suggestion
There is also 94, but if there is any increase in performance above the recommended ideal of 93, it should be more obvious at 100 than at 94.

I can always tell when I am just running 91 because the exhaust note is very raspy.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It does make a bit of a difference. A little more power that somehow you can actually feel (although that could be wishful thinking).
Plus it makes paying for 91 seem so much less expensive by comparison...
The engine is optimized at 93 RON, and detunes itself to take 91. Improvement is maxed at 93 RON. If you search the archives, you will find the appropriate ratios of 91/100 to get 93 RON.
I keep trying to find somewhere out here in san diego where I can buy it at the pump to no avail!!!! anyone? the best I could do was get what 103 by 5 gallons at 10 bucks a gallon? ouch!!
Cosby Oil has 100 unleaded in 5 gallon buckets, and claims they'll have it at a pump in about a month. They're at 6220 Fairmont. They also have 92 RON at a pump, but you need their special credit card to access the pump.......
Most stations here have 93 RON premium. We have one gas station here that supplies 100 RON, $3.50 a gallon!! Put in about 7/8 tank worth last summer. There is also 94, but if there is any increase in performance above the recommended ideal of 93, it should be more obvious at 100 than at 94. I did not notice any difference. I thought maybe it needed time to tune itself, so I filled the tank again when it was half full and did some more spirited runs though my favorite twisty roads. Seat of the pants analysis: I was pissing away good money for additional RON over the 93 that I routinely get. So, now, even if a station has a 94 RON choice, I still get the 93.
I wonder if anyone is willing to Dyno test?
I am slightly confused here guys. Are you saying that the most common fuel at the pump is less than 94 RON?
In Australia the standard, pleb fuel is 94 RON, our Premium fuel is at 98 RON. I believe BP is working on 100 RON fuel for release here and it will only be $0.03 more than the 98 RON. 98 RON sells for $0.70 per litre here.
I must admit that I have never run the car on anything other than 98 RON. At the same time though, the only fuel I use is Shell Optimax. Any other fuel makes the car smell in an odd way.
Arthur,
ROW fuel rating is different from US rating. US 93 RON is roughly equivalent to ROW 98 RON, and so on down the line. We also use US gallons, not the metric litre, and we Americans can't spell so it's "liter"
. Au$0.70 per litre would be roughly Au$2.80 per US gallon.
Ive never seen anything more at a pump than 94 and thats what i use. I have noticed the car smoothened out, idle, etc... Again, only Sunoco offering it though.
Palting,
Thanks for the explanation. I must admit you guys make it hard for us foreigners to get a grip on things over there
I can understand 94RON equals 94 Octane fuel rating, but how 94 equals 98 has got me beat.
Also the price per litre I quoted was in US$ we pay about AU$0.95 for 98 Octane fuel.
In europe they use RON... in NA they use CLC or AKA method (as written on the pumps)... so 98 RON = 93 CLC or AKA... look it up... its in the porsche manual...
I use 1 gallon of 100 Octane to every 3 gallons of 91 and it does make a difference. The car runs smoother, has more power, and is quieter for some reason. I can always tell when I am just running 91 because the exhaust note is very raspy.
100 Octane has been $4.29 here in Northern California for the last 2 years, so I expect that with the price of gas going up the way it is, It won't be long that it will not matter if I put in 91 or 100, the price will be about the same
I agree.... in the manual it states the engine is optimized for 93 octane (CLC/AKA method) which is 98 RON.... although it will run on 91 octane but 93 is best...
Again, you are an idiot and have no idea about the motronic used in porsches. It automatically gauges the RON at startup when the car first fires, sensing the octane and adjusting the timing READ retarding it for 91, accordingly. My car also idles smoother and has better torque- more power lower with like 5 gallons of 100.
btw not trying to overtly harsh but I don't like when people state a case so positively without any doubt with obviously limited information or no attempt to at least consider alternate possibilities
