Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The two things that I think make the biggest difference to cold weather reliability are the right oil (so the fussy valvegear gets lubricated right away) and a heavier duty battery.
Leading evidence: 'Lubricate right away) and a heavier duty battery' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Lubricate right away) and a heavier duty battery' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I have had to replace the odd brake cooling duct for this reason.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm looking at an 04 996 C4S...as a daily driver.
I live in northern Canada where the winter temps are -25 on a regular basis and routinely hit overnight lows of -40.
Trying to find info about the C4S winter preparations and I'm having trouble finding details.
Is there a block heater available for the 996?
Any feedback from others who drive their C4S in the winter in very cold climates, would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
sean
Toronto probably doesn't count for your purposes, but FWIW...
The two things that I think make the biggest difference to cold weather reliability are the right oil (so the fussy valvegear gets lubricated right away) and a heavier duty battery. I put a 760cca battery in mine. Heavier, but much more up to the job than the OE piece.
In terms of how you use it, I'd strongly advocate for the brief warm-up/drive away routine. I think in very cold ambient temps, hot spots are otherwise a risk. I also try to make sure it gets a long run as regularly as possible to get rid of accumulated moisture in the oil, which is either a quirk of this car or something I'd never noticed in my previous ones.
Snow tires obviously a must, though I'm sure you're planning on that.

Sounds like you are in Edmonton or further north... I have driven mine in -25C condition, but never left it parked outside for and extended period of time (i.e. more than 8 hours). It's a fine winter car, but I would be loathe leave it outside at -40C.
I did a quick search and could not find a block heater on Pelican Parts.
The Porsche is just a car and whatever prep other car owners in your area use that works for them and their cars should work for you and your Porsche.
If the car's going to be outside or in an unheated garage I'd think a block heater would be a requirement. You might check with a Porsche dealer and see if the factory offfers something that can be retrofitted.
Or if there is an aftermarket block heater that can be adapted to your car.
One negative is the Porsche sits a bit lower and anything attached to the engine and its oil sump is at some risk of being damaged. I've driven in winter conditions and cars/trucks shed blocks of frozen slush from behind wheel well openings that present some risk to a lower car that happens to come upon them and can't dodge them and of course the ground clearance means the block of ice can be heard banging its way the length of the underside of the car. In those cold conditions those underbody plastic panels will be brittle as all get out.
Sincerely,
Macster.
True statement. I have had to replace the odd brake cooling duct for this reason. No biggie. But it reminds me of one other thing I did to mine: an engine protection plate. Maybe overkill, but when I found out that damaged blocks on these engines can actually seep oil, I started taking the risks of road debris - including ice chunks - a bit more seriously.
You're talking celcius ? -25 celcius has not been a problem for me leaving the car outside overnight in NH.
Never seen -40,but I'd bet you'd be OK with good battery and a block heater.
