Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

In neutral, I use an old phonebook to hold the accelerator down so that it idles at 4500 rpm for 10 minutes before driving off.
Leading evidence: 'Use phonebook' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check coolant level again and wait' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
One of the negative side effects of using pastics and having a closed crankcase ventilating system.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Took awhile to get some decent pictures but here they are.
And a question about that yellow gunk in the oil filler, WTF is it?
Thanks all, still enjoying this forum and digging my 996.
Geoff
It is water mixed with oil. Condensation will form on the cooler parts of the oiling system and rise to the highest level in the system. This is extremely bad for the engine. One of the negative side effects of using pastics and having a closed crankcase ventilating system. Can be eliminated by making an illegal vent to the atmosphere in the oiling system or my driving you car longer and hotter to eliminate moisture in the oil..
Ok, that makes some sense to me, I do have a short drive to work.
Maybe an oil change real quick is in order and let the car get warmer on the way to work.
Thanks
i always let the car warm up for about 7-10 mins before i take off.... seems silly, but i feel safer that way...... although it does take up a little more gas
condesnation in the oil. just drive the car longer an get it hot.
change your oil at least once a year regardless of the milage.
i do less then 5k a year and change it at least twice
In neutral, I use an old phonebook to hold the accelerator down so that it idles at 4500 rpm for 10 minutes before driving off. I do this in a closed garage.
Seeing that in the oil filler tube is more than likely just condensation but if it appears on the dipstick, the motor is KO'd. I know, Ive seen it happen many times on my supercharged motors from hard leans. The good ol "milkshake".
Your car has the clap! A shot of penicillin will fix it right up! It's probably been sleeping around with a lot of Bimmers!
Seriously, what 1999Porsche911 said, it is condensation. You need to drive it longer and harder to get the engine up to full operating temp for a while. A few short trips are OK, but too many of them will cause the gunk to appear.
Too funny on the clap....
Reading some of the replys I too wait for the car to come down from fast idle before I leave in the morning. Trip to work is only 15K, how long should the car warmup before getting on it. Thought perhaps wrongly the best way to warm it up is to drive, that being the case, after it warms maybe just hold a lower gear for the drive in?
Thanks all....
The best way to warm it up IS to drive it. Just don't go above 4,000 RPM until it reaches operating temp, which will be when the temp gauge needle is between the 8 and the 0 of the 180 mark. Then drive it like you stole it!
