There are a lot of fuses in this car, and the one causing the problem was C3.

I checked fuses for some of these components (windows, sunroof) and they appear to be fine.

I mounted my TPMS display on the vertical carpet using Velcro, which is much cleaner than having to stick it on or under the dash somewhere...

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.
Rennlist: 1 discussions
0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.
3 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.
I just did the GT3 console delete to a 2000 Carrera that I recently purchased. In the process, I moved the HVAC from in front of the shifter to over the radio. I removed cupholders and storage cubby.
Got all components in their places and back together, and I noticed that now a bunch of things aren't working:
windows
defroster
alarm
sunroof
dome lights
lights for vanity mirrors
I checked fuses for some of these components (windows, sunroof) and they appear to be fine.
The HVAC controller works fine.
I'm guessing the things that aren't working share a common harness somewhere.
Anybody have any advice before I pull things apart?
I thought the install went pretty smooth, with one exception: it was a bitch to relocate the wiring harness for the HVAC controller. I did a bit of pushing and pulling for that. Maybe that's where I knocked something loose???
I pulled the hvac and radio out, and pulled the center console. Looked for any obvious problems and didn't see any.
Any chance these things are on a common relay?
Will post a pic when I have the chance.
Ironically, the things I moved (HVAC, seat heater switches, radio) are all working perfectly.
Of the things that aren't working, the only one I messed with is the window switches, as I disconnected them to remove the center console. Today I rechecked that they are connected properly.
I guess I must have dislodged a ground or a harness connection somewhere, but I can't figure out where.
If I decide I can't figure this out on my own, is this something that goes to a dealer? Is that my best bet for an electrical issue like this?
Problem solved!!!
The Internet is awsome, even for things other than ****!
After trying various search terms in Google, I came across a thread on Renntech where I guy had similar symptoms. After four pages of comments and various attempts at diagnosis and repair that took place over three weeks, he found a blown fuse. Replacement of the fuse solved the problem. His suffering was to my benefit, as I've got it fixed after just a few hours.
There are a lot of fuses in this car, and the one causing the problem was C3. Had I been doing a better job of reading the key to the fuses, I should have found it sooner. This fuse does the central locking and alarm as well as windows, lights, and sunroof. I guess I glossed over it after seeing alarm, as I wasn't thinking about that.
Let's hope all our problems are so simple to solve!
Will try to remember to post pics of the console delete. Black car, black interior, dark garage--now is not the time.
Mark
Keep an eye on that fuse, that circuit grounded out for some reason and could happen again. As tempting it might be, if it blows again, don't try putting a bigger fuse in there as a fix.
Will do. I might have blown it while replacing the passenger vanity mirror. I think I recall letting the leads touch. Didn't seem like much, but I guess enough to blow a fuse.
I'm 6'4", so leg room is always an issue. I bought a '99 Boxster in '04. Within a couple of months I did the console delete. I missed the storage cubby a bit, but there's no doubt this was a great mod for me.
When I looked at this 996 I knew the console delete would be in order. Leg room is a bit less of an issue with the 996 compared to the 986, as the seat goes back further. However, I really didn't like the HVAC low in front of the shifter, and I figured I can do without the cup holders.
So, I will be very happy with the change.
Given the black interior, my mediocre photography skills, and the fact that my camera is a phone, it's not a great picture:
Seat heater buttons, HCAC controller, and a storage cubby were in the lower console, in front of the shifter. There was a cup holder above the radio.
Cup holder, storage cubby, and lower console are now gone. HVAC controller is now obviously above the radio. Seat heater buttons are now the bottom buttons on either side of the HVAC.
I'm very happy with the arrangement.
I too have done the GT3 delete, first in my 986 and then my 996. Although it leaves the dash looking like it's kind of suspended in midair, it's very nice to get the legroom. I mounted my TPMS display on the vertical carpet using Velcro, which is much cleaner than having to stick it on or under the dash somewhere...
