Anyways, I called up John Raysich and he quoted me $500 in labor (6-8 hours) just to replace the pads and rotors.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I need to get all my brake pads and rotors replaced....
Do I go to my regular mechanic for this (non Porsche/European specialist but in business for 35 years), or is this something that should only be handled by a porsche mechanic either dealer or indy?
Also, can anyone recommend an Indy mechanic in the Pittsburgh area (South Hills)? I checked
http://www.pcarshops.com/
, and see 2 in Bridgeville, but wanted to know if anyone has any specific recommendations.
Thanks.
There is nothing difficult or mysterious about Porsche rotors/pads. Any competent mechanic can do it. It actually is one of the more simple jobs to do, and if you have any DIY abilities, you could do it yourself quite easily. The main issue will be one of choice of rotors and pads, and I would not leave that up to your Indy. If you have him do it, please choose the rotors/pads yourself, or specify OE rotors and pads only. There are many different brands and combinations...and quality. Do a little research on combinations available from Pelican, Suncoast Porsche, Auto Atlanta, etc., and search this forum for what others have chosen. Also RennTech forum is a good source of information. Good luck!
True, this is a standard pad, possibly rotor change - straightforward stuff and if you have a trusted indy there should not be an issue. Or, if you'd like to try it yourself, we can guide you through the process. Here are install instructions for you to review if you're tempted to try yourself:
Replacing 996 Brake Pads
Does not sound as though you will require any performance pads/rotors so go with brands such as Textar or Akebono - both great choices. Or a little more pricey, the always safe Genuine Porsche. Review pads here:

Hope that helps.

I am no mechanical genius but I changed my rotors and pads. It was stupid easy. There is a great video tutorial on YouTube from forum member Van Swenson.
Scorchpa, I have personal experience with John Raysich in Bridgeville. Would definitely recommend to you.
Where do you live?

Thanks for the advice everyone.
I just ordered some Zimmerman rotors and Mintex Pads from Pelican. I'll watch the video and maybe try it myself... I am fairly handy, so I'm sure I can work my way through it... just a matter if I can find the time to do it!
Narkose - I'm in Upper St Clair across from the golf course. Bridgeville is only 10-15 minutes away, so if I don't try it myself, I might send it to Raysich.
Thanks
I did my front rotors and pads a few years ago, and it was very straightforward. Vans video was quite clear and useful for a first timer. Glad you decided to tackle it yourself, it will help you bond with your Porsche.
Hey Narkose,
I'm only 1 mile from Baker on Hastings Mill Rd, just before you hit Old Washington rd.
Anyways, I called up John Raysich and he quoted me $500 in labor (6-8 hours) just to replace the pads and rotors. The other shop in Bridgeville McB Autosport quoted $320 in labor.....
Still going to try to do it myself this week.... wish me luck!
Well got through the first corner.... Total time was about 1 hour, but most of that was looking for tools, making sure I was doing things right, re-watching the videos - etc, etc etc.
Can't believe how easy it is. Going to do the other 3 corners this weekend... can't imagine it taking more than 30-40 min per corner after that.
