In the past -- when under warranty the tranny was replaced -- he used an engine jack/support to hold the engine up while the tranny swap was done.

Even back in 02 when I had my Boxster's RMS done the SOP was to replace the IMS flange or end plate with a new one with a triple-ribbed seal and new micro-sealed bolts.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've had my c4s half heartedly for sale since the middle of summer. Early on I turned down some offers, which in retrospect I should have taken. Since I've had some much lower offers than original. The season/winter, I get it. Most inquirers are well informed about the 996. I continually get the same rms,IMS,clutch questions. Well my rms does drip, and the IMS and clutch are original. The drip never bother me. The clutch is fine. And I have since long got past the paranoia of the IMS. the car does have around 95k miles. January is coming and it when I put the car up on jackstands and flush brakes, change oil and scrub out the wheel wells. My question is should I figure on getting better offers in the spring as is. Or replace the rms AOS IMS and clutch while I have the time this winter? I do my own work and do t like to hurry, probably take me the whole month. What does everyone think?

POST 2Original post

I think you already have the answer, the market is well aware of the issues and these are going to be key selling points. You may be alright with it, but the majority of buyers are not likely to take the risk. Biggest factor is how badly you need the funds. If you can wait, it will work out better for you to replace components and sell come spring GLWS either way

POST 3Original post

Probably just me but I'd be leery of a car that had its AOS, RMS, IMSB upgrade, done by the previous owner just prior to selling the car. I'd wonder why he went to that effort only to turn around and then sell the car. Also, I'd worry about how motivated he was in doing a good job since the car was offered for sale right after. Then there is the issue of even if he did the best job there would be no warranty. There is I think no right answer. You just have to pick a course of action and do what you think is best for you in these circumstances. Ignoring any other issues while you are likely to get better offers come spring the car will be older and any spring fling excitement by used car shoppers that could prompt then to submit generous offers for a car might be reined in by the fact the car is older and has depreciated some more.

POST 4Original post

If you can do the work yourself, therefore spending only the cost of parts, then I would do the work. The car should sell quicker and for more money. Be certain to keep parts receipts and take photographs during the process. If you've got any expert who can verify the work was done properly (a buddy who's a professional mechanic), I think it would allay concerns that the work was not done professionally. Any buyer who is enthusiast enough to be aware of the problems you are fixing should also be aware enough to know that it is normal to wrench on these cars yourself.

POST 5Original post

How do you know it's the rear main seal and not the bearing flange leaking?

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the responses. I do most of my work on my vehicles. Doing this wouldn't be anything more than a winter project. Id rather have just sold the car at a discount than do the work. I'm going to make a decision in the next week. I might call the two Indy shops in my area to get a quote, given the possbilty of the pro job my sit better with a prospective buyer. I'm assuming it's the rms its leaked since I've had it. If the car sits a week there will be a drop on the floor. Not ever enough in a years time to have to add oil.

POST 7Original post

Had the RMS in my 03 Turbo done recently at a dealer. Around $1750 and the bulk of that was labor. Just the tranny came out. The tech used some kind of a support bolted to where IIRC the sway bar attaches to support the engine. In the past -- when under warranty the tranny was replaced -- he used an engine jack/support to hold the engine up while the tranny swap was done. Oh, the RMS leak got rather heavy towards the end. (On a related note my 02 Boxster's RMS leaked but the car had to sit a week or more before any oil would show up on the floor under the car.) If you have the work done be sure the warranty is transferrable when you sell the car. That will help in making the car more attractive to a buyer. Oh, Imo000 raises a good point about the leak possibly being from the IMS flange. Even back in 02 when I had my Boxster's RMS done the SOP was to replace the IMS flange or end plate with a new one with a triple-ribbed seal and new micro-sealed bolts. The SM told me that often enough a new RMS alone had the car back in with the same leak sign and it turned out the IMS flange (or bolts) were the leak source.

POST 8Original post

Just factor in a $2k credit to a buyer where this is the factor and the only thing from getting a deal done. This way they can take it to a place they're comfortable with or trust. You could also get lucky and get a buyer that doesn't have IMS paranoia.

POST 9Original post

agree with alpine003 above: full disclosure about current issues and deduct from "ASKING" price

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 10997481

Exactly. As a buyer I would rather take the price reduction and any needed work done by my own local shop for warranty and confidence reasons.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 10997695

I agree here. A C4S in fantastic shape shouldn't have any problem selling - IMS done or not.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I reduced the price 3000 under asking to compensate for work to be performed at the future owners discretion. I'm pretty easy to get along with, but I'm not looking to give the car away. It will sell sooner or later.
