HI Guys,
Eventhough I've been reading you for some time now, I'm new in this forum so the first thing I will do is introduce myself>
My name is Alex, currently live in Mallorca (Spain) work in the tourism industry and my 2 beloved cars are a MKII Toyota MR2 for the every day use, and her younger sister a manual artic Silver MKI 996 C4 with Boxster red interior and Turbo look rims which I drive on the weekends.
So far, the only mod I've done is the airfilter with a K&N. I've been reading quite a lot about the mod in the stock mufflers to improve the sound, which is something I particularly feel the car lacks, so I'm convinced to proceed with it. But here is where I'd need your kind help. Can anybody direct me, or send me, or attach in this topic a few pictures for this mod with the MKI mufflers? (The "J" tube conversion) As I've managed to get quite a few for the MKII mufflers, but not for the MKI...
Any tip, or picture much appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Alex
Hello and welcome - here is a pic of mine and a link to a good long read...
I would advise getting a hold of a set of 3.6 cans for the mod... do not mod your 3.4 cans
GL and post your results and pics of car - love to see the color combo

Sorry, big mistake on my behalf not adding some pics!!!
Here you have some of my 2 beauties!
I hope you like the color combination. I love the car just as it is, the only thing I feel Id need to do something about is to improve a little bit the sound. I once heard a MKII with the muffler mod on it and the improvent was very noticeable! So thats why Id like to do the same for mine. Ive gathered from this forum, that for my MKI mufflers the "J" tube is the best option...
Am I right?
Cheers!
Alex
Alex,
I had a feeling you would soon come through with pics, and you did. Nice looking combo!
Yes, the MK I (J-pipe) mod is your best bet. I would suggest you go with a 1.5" or larger pipe to give you teh best sound gain.
I think I was the only one with the MK-I mod.
I didnt run a J-pipe, rather I just connected the inlet to the outlet with a slightly curved 1 1/2" mild steel tube.
In this fashion, it wasnt correct but it got the sound desired I believe.
It was too raspy for me, I wanted more of a drone but it was leaps and bounds better than the factory sound.
great shots, beautiful car and country!!
Really? MKI "J" pipe mod is his "best bet"?
I guess its been a while so I re-read a few pages of that old thread... yea, J pipe IF you keep your 3.4 cans.........
To ship a pair from US to you would add another $200 - might not be in the budget, but if it is... find some 3.6 cans and do the MKII Hack
Thanks guys for your nice comments.
Id follow your sugestions and try to get hold of 3.6 cans locally (dont want to spend more bucks in the shipping than in the cans) if as you say well worth the difference in sound.
Alex
Porsche really should make a muffler for the USA (with the sound WE like) .
thas why i ordered a set of darrin fisters modded stock cans. (waiting on fedex!)
