Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

In addition to all the usual 996 things to check for and of course all the usual used car things to check for Targas I read can be noisy.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am ready to get into my first Porsche. I have been waiting for this since I was a kid so I am pretty excited but I don't want to rush into the wrong car.
There is an '02 Targa with 50k miles on it for sale for around 30k at the local Jag dealership. It looks great but I haven't drove it yet. I want to be prepped when I drive it with all the questions I should be asking.
If you guys could help me out with a few questions:
What should I look out for when test driving this car?
What questions need to be asked?
What should I expect as an average annual maintenance cost if I put 10k miles/year on it?
Any help is appreciated!
Not to hijack the thread (much) but I'm parting with mine:
2003 Seal Gray Targa, 6-Speed with a New Reman Engine (3,500 miles on it), 2-year Porsche Warranty on that, new clutch and a year left on the Extended Warranty I originally bought...
I'm gonna put it on ebay for about 29k....PM (or email) if you want to know more...
Pete
I will throw a few things in here too (excuse to post another pic of my car) If the coolant tank has not been replaced your on borrowed time. Check inside tread of rear tires, my tires looked good at a a glance but once I crawled under the car the inside tread was wore out.
Here's another picture, lol.
Excellence and GT & Purely Porsche and 911 And Porsche mags (the last 2 published in UK) have run good 996 buyer guides.

During test ride -- first so you can concentrate on sounds -- is to verify car's as quiet as a Targa can be. Ride with top closed and open and try to get test driver to drive on some rougher roads. No plowed fields but just the kind of roads you'll be driving. Traverse some driveways into/out of parking lots to see if car has any unusual noises at chassis undergoes twisting forces.
Check for signs of water ingress around top.
Sincerely,
Macster.

Well I test drove an '02 Targa with 55k miles this weekend. It ran perfect. Top worked perfect. No shaking or rattling, no excessive wind noise. Car ran strong and tight.
