Personally I use a mixture of 1 qt 0-40 Mobile1 with the red cap, 1/2 qt Mobile1 with the gold cap, 1 qt Castrol 15-50, 1 qt Redline 5-30 and a gallon of whatever is on sale at Tractor Supply.

Just fresh clean oil (and new filter) and probably -- make that almost certainly -- on a schedule more frequent than the owners manual states.

Interesting, Castrol looks like 5W40 is what they recommend for the most part; but, with Mobil 1 - 0W40 is okay; but, majority of it says 5W40 as well.

When I asked my dealership yesterday (HBL of Tyson's) - they said 0W40, 5W40, 15W50, and even 5W30 are okay to use if Mobil 1 or Castrol Synthentic depending on frequency of oil change (5W30 if every 3K is okay they said).

I was just curious about the FAQ - trying to read up on how to change oil myself, and was just curious as to the suggestion of mixing different weights in the FAQ since I had not seen it before.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I know most seem to use 0W40. I am on east coast (northern va) - and was wondering whether the mixture is recommended?
0W40 - seems to be better suited for high temperature/humidity areas (perhaps TX/FL, etc).
Just curious to see why FAQ would suggest something a bit contrary?
Thx
Porsche DOES NOT recommend a specific weight of oil. The oil delivered in the car from the factory is provided by Exxon for 2 reasons. First, the 0W40 is necessary to meet the MPG claims made by Porsche. Second, Exxon supplies the oil to Porsche at a deep discount, knowing that most drivers are ignorant when it comes to oil and its function within the engine and they will use what the car comes with.
Which oil you use is a compromise. There is no lubricant that will deliver both the best fuel efficiency and the best protection. You want the best gas mileage...use the Mobil 0W40. You want the best protection in any climate above 25F...use a 5W50 or preferably Mobil Extended Perfromance 15W50.
Not only will moving to a better oil than Mobil 0W40 reduce or eliminate oil burning and leaks in cars prone to it, but will better insure that your valves and variocams operate predictably and smoothly while providing substantially better pressure at high load and low engine speeds.
Thanks anderson. Interesting, Castrol looks like 5W40 is what they recommend for the most part; but, with Mobil 1 - 0W40 is okay; but, majority of it says 5W40 as well.
I am not interested in gas mileage - honestly, I am more interested in protection and protecting the engine internals properly. I just am wondering if I switch from 0W40 to a different viscosity - is this wise? I do not mind sticking with 0W40; but, I've been reading that a 50 might be good. Appears from the PDF you can mix same oils without problems -- so, maybe combining a 5W40 with 5W50 if Exxon Brand. Appears only 5W40 allowed for Castrol.
Does it make a difference if it is a 3.4L vs. 3.6L? Probably not from the PDF file that was posted here.
Side note- does anyone use redline fuel injector or BG products as well with oil change/fuel every 3K or so?
Well what you said and what is rec'd don't mesh then. Unless of course, "recommended oil viscoity" means something different to you. I'm not getting dragged into this one again.
There is not a specific brand or weight of oil recommended or approved by Porsche, but a wide range of both. i.e. nowhere does Porche state that you must use Mobil 0W40 regardless of what conditions you drive your car in.
Additionally, The Porsche approval list is for dealers only and is not distributed in any way to the owners of the car. The type and weight oil listed in your manual is all you have to follow to be in complete compliance with Porsche.
Semantically: a range of recommendations is still a recommendation, and you said they made no recommendation...
If you ask me for a restaurant recommendation and I recommend two, is it still a recommendation?
When faced with the road less travelled do you... well, let's stop at semantics.
WOW, this is an great thread. NOT!!!
But WTF, I guess it will have to do until we get another "All 996 engines blow" or "Did you see the 996 on Ebay for $2,500?" thread.
Carry on ladies.
sorry guys - did not know this would create a hoopla. Been awhile since I've been on here.
Can someone still explain why in the FAQ section, it recommended mixing 5W30 with 15W50 (4 quarts each approximately)?
When I asked my dealership yesterday (HBL of Tyson's) - they said 0W40, 5W40, 15W50, and even 5W30 are okay to use if Mobil 1 or Castrol Synthentic depending on frequency of oil change (5W30 if every 3K is okay they said). They said typically, people use 0W40; but, 5W40 is just as fine. They said you can mix weights as long as it is the same brand -- 2+ quarts of 15W50 with remainder of 0W40, etc.
Just wondering if anyone else mixed weights? The FAQ section is first time I've seen a write-up suggesting the mixture of weights.
Also, do you guys use BG MOA, BG 44K, or other products in conjunction with fuel fillups/oil changes?
Thx
'99 - have you tried 50wt. Valvoline Racing T oil? That stuff is uber slimy, like gear oil.
You wipe for days and the stuff just sticks to everything, hell, it throws an @$$ whooping on hand cleaners......
I would mix some quarts of that in Mobil 1 to get more ZDDP. Not sure how the cats would like it though.
There shouldn't be hoopla but for some reason there are a handful of topics that seem to get this forum going. Oil is one of them.
FWIW, I would never take advice on what oil to use from this forum. If you are going to own a Porsche you really need to find a good service manager or an independent Porsche mechanic that you trust to give you good advice. Tell them about your driving habits, climate, frequency of oil changes, etc and listen to their advice.

That seems way too easy Ray. Go back to your corner and think of something more complicated.
Personally I use a mixture of 1 qt 0-40 Mobile1 with the red cap, 1/2 qt Mobile1 with the gold cap, 1 qt Castrol 15-50, 1 qt Redline 5-30 and a gallon of whatever is on sale at Tractor Supply. I've noticed my car revs much freer and seems to have more power. My butt dyno says 15 hp.
Screwing around of course. On the HWFM forum there is a thread making fun of the thread on the 997 forum about how to do a spirited run to Starbucks without spilling your coffee. (I'm told they also have a good thread on key chains.) I covered my round headlights to hide the fact I sometimes drive a 997.
It may seem that way. However, if you are a true Porschephile you need to do the following;
- buy 1 quart of every oil on that list and pour each bottle into one vat.
- aquire a small branch from a tree (no less than 100 years old) in the Black Forest (about an hours drive from Porsche HQ in Stuttgart).
- whittle the banch into a long rod and gently stir the mixture (at room temp) for 24 hours.
- Use this oil for the change and discard the excess at your nearest oil recycling center.
Apparently, the latter list has been updated by the one qoted earlier. So, if you used Pentosin, you better drain it ASAP
Nothing is ever that easy.
Stefan
Ray, you may be on to something here. Could what you just described be the long searched for cure for the dreaded RMS failure? Hmm....
If so, maybe we can put to rest one of the other "hot button" issues here. LOL
I personally like to add a jigger of WD-40, followed by a sprinkle of teflon powder. Then I swing a dead cat over my head while chanting "no-gre-na-da, no-gre-na-da, no-gre-na-da".
So far car runs great!
You can find anything on Rennlist....
A jigger or measure is a bartending tool used to measure liquor, which is typically then poured into a cocktail shaker. It is named for the unit of liquid it typically measures, a 1.5 fluid ounce (~44 ml) jigger or shot.[1] However bar jiggers come in other sizes and may not actually measure a fluid jigger.
A traditional style of jigger is made of stainless steel with two opposing cones in an hourglass shape on the end of a rod. Typically, one cone measures a fluid jigger and the other 1.0 fl. oz. (~30 ml) pony (shot) or 0.75 fl. oz (~22 ml). Other combinations include 2 fl. oz./1 fl. oz. and 1.75 fl. oz./0.75 fl. oz. A typical British "jigger" measures 50ml on the larger side, and 25ml on the smaller side.
+1
it was something to do with water...
One of the first drives in the P-Car my 9 year old runs up to the door with some sort of drink trying to get in...
I yell "HEY !!" and open the door for him...
Thinking he is off the hook I asked him to "PLEASE put your drink in the cup holder and DONT spill it"
He smiles, looks around for about 10 seconds, looks back with this totally lost look that was priceless and says "but there are NO cup holders"
I bark back (playfully) "That's cuz there NO DRINKING in my new car!! Get rid of that BEFORE you get in!!"
We still laugh about that one

<-- here is the article I am referring to. It is under Item G for the oils and fluids section. The FAQ says mix 5W30 with 15W50 (about 4 quarts each). If these are not approved - maybe a moderator should consider changing the weight of the oil suggested in this section to avoid misleading people?? (I did notice the disclaimer at top of page though).
Thx guys - just trying to give myself 2 options to purchase oil -- sometimes 0W40 is not easy to find, and would like to have option of using 5W40 as well.
Also - since Mobil 1 and Castrol are approved (per 1st page link) -- allows me to use different brands now.
I was just curious about the FAQ - trying to read up on how to change oil myself, and was just curious as to the suggestion of mixing different weights in the FAQ since I had not seen it before.
Consult owners manual for viscosity recommendations for temperatures in your area and use a good oil that comes in that viscosity. Mobil 1 is one such oil and there are others.
Mixing oil? Last time I mixed oil was when I rode a motorcycle powered by a two-cycle engine that required oil mixed with gas.
Just buy a good brand of synthetic oil in the proper viscosity grade and change it and filter at reasonable intervals.
I've run Mobil 1 0w-40 for since '02 and car will be 7 years on old next month. Oh, and has almost 212,000 miles on original engine. On the homeward bound leg of what will be a nearly 5000 mile road trip with it and after over 3000 miles of driving oil level has dropped just two bars on display. Not even half quart of oil and by the time I get home will have used maybe at most a half of a quart of oil. (And since I follow 5000 mile oil/filter service schedules it will get an oil/filter service when I get home. It got one just before I left too.)
If Mobil 1 0W-40 can stay in my car's engine, I think it will stay in yours.
If I lived in a hotter climate or tracked car I'd consider 15w-50 or a 5w-50 but I'd never mix or blend two or more oils of different viscosities.
Mixing oils indeed!
Oh, there is some input that using Swepco oil additive (520 is is the number? Porsche dealer parts counter guy can advise you of the proper number) is a good thing for engines that sit unused for long periods of time. Porsche mechanics have told me this additive cuts noise upon startup. Since I change my car's oil frequently and drive it all the time mechanics told me it would be of no benefit to my engine.
Sincerely,
Macster.
Holy crap Mac, you never told us you have 212,000 miles on your M96!!!!
That has to be the highest on the board!!!
Anyways, back to the subject. Adding an additive to your oil is the same as mixing other oils.........dont understand why this a "made fun of" scenario......
You are simply adding more of ones oil properties (usually one oil has something better) to another.....pretty basic concept.........
Not a fan of oil additives but Porsche techs have told me there's some benefit -- quieter engine starts -- using Swepco oil additive. Less noise is less wear/tear which ain't a bad thing.
Since I seldom let my car sit unused for any extended length of time (day or so at most, once in great while (couple times a year) a week (while away in other car) techs told me additive not necessary in my car's situation. I barely hear chains dragging across guides/tensioners before oil pressure and flow quiets this noise. No lifter noise at all.
I only mentioned the additive for those that do let their cars sit long periods of time unused and are perhaps bothered by the amount of noise upon engine start and for a while after.
My engine has been fed a regular diet of Mobil 1 0W-40 for most of its life (I used 15w-50 in it a couple of times and tried 10w-40 oil once or twice too). But 90% of the oil changes have been with 0w-40.
That's about all the oil "additive" I think most cars need. Just fresh clean oil (and new filter) and probably -- make that almost certainly -- on a schedule more frequent than the owners manual states.
Oh, my '02 Boxster now has over 212,775 miles on it.
Sincerely,
Macster.
