I actually paid $300 less to have my clutch replaced than a buddy of mine paid for the same job in his Cavalier.
Leading evidence: 'Replace than a buddy of mine paid' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check service schedules posted at renntech' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. I think we have different definitions of slightly used and basic maintenance.

(do you have to drop engine on almost everything that you due to lack of access?) Do you have to remove a ton of things just to change the alternator, for ex.?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello All,
Im trying to get into the market of a slightly used 911TT or 911 996 model and would like to know how difficult it is to work on these cars since they are rear engine.
I have worked mostly japanese cars with front engines (changing pulleys, starter, radiator, suspension work, and other basic "engine out" type of work) and not really a big fan of bringing this type of car to the stealership.
1. How difficult to maintain 911TT or 911? (do you have to drop engine on almost everything that you due to lack of access?) Do you have to remove a ton of things just to change the alternator, for ex.? How are the engines? are they bullet proof? more electronics issues than mechanical? etc...
need all your feedback
thanks in advance and a great new year 2009 to all!
What year (s) are you considering? It makes a difference. The 996 engine is REALLY jammed in there, little to no space to do any serious wrenching.
The older Porsches (1980s and back) seem to have a lot more room to work.
For basic maintenance, it's not too bad. You do have to be able to put the car up on ramps, stands or a lift would obviously be the best. Much of the motor's access comes from the bottom of the car (i.e. doing plugs, oil changes etc...). Some other items like the coolant reservoir are difficult but not impossible due to the tight spaces of the upper part of the motor compartment.
I've just started doing some of the maintenance myself, and so far, it's not too bad. There are some great resources here and other sites for DIY's. Anything further and I would still have an experienced Indy or good dealership for backup for the jobs you don't want to tackle.

if you are comfortable with it then you shouldnt have any problem.... it is crammed in there, but if you have time and take things slow... youll be fine.
I think the 996 is very easy to work on. Most parts have some thought behind them regarding future maintenance. I think you'll find with the right tools and techniques it's tight but pretty straightforward for basic stuff.
thanks to all that have posted. this is one of my biggest stipulation for a purchase. thank you also for the DIY links.
If i make the purchase (either 2002 996TT or 996 na), i plan to keep it very long hence the question of self maintenance. im not really thinking of mods but basic "engine out" maintenance (plugs, alternator, starter, radiator, pulleys/belts, t-stat, etc...)
i need more people to chime in. thanks again and a great new yr 2009 to all!
I think you will find that most 996 owners are not dropping their engines to perform routine maintenance, so not too many will have the kind of info you are looking for. Anything other than oil changes and reasonable DIYs [See Renntech], most will see the dealer or an Indie mechanic.
In regards to you question about difficulty to maintain: check the service schedules posted at Renntech for scheduled maintenance requirements.
For the most part, those items should not cause "accessibility" issue for you. Accessing the radiators will require removal of the front bumper cover, but that is about a 15-minute job.
so you mean, basic maintenance like alternator, starter, pulleys/belts/chains, thermostat, fuel/water pump, etc...) and other stuff dont need an engine dropped?
I realized this could be a tough crowd as most owners are either too wealthy to fix their own cars or dont have the time (or skills period). thanks for the renntech link. happy 2009!
all those basic maintenance you mentioned should not be a problem (no engine drop). So far my biggest project was R&R the Air/Oil Seperator... but was not a big deal as long as you are patient... Dont let this stuff scare you...
I think we have different definitions of slightly used and basic maintenance.
I would only consider replacing those items if they failed or I knew they were going to fail in the near term. OTOH, maintenance tasks to me are items like those described on the scheduled maintenance list I linked earlier; plugs, filters, fluids, etc.
Thanks for the backhanded compliment.
slightly used =low mileage and well maintained. i meant normal "wear and tear" when I was pertaining to basic maintenance.
as i plan to keep the car for as long as i can, these normal wear and tear (starter, alternator, fuel/water pump, timing chain, clutch, gearbox, thermostat, etc...)
can or will fail
.
996's are easy to work on if your already a mechanic. The turbo's are the same for any other turbo vs. non-turbo porsche. They're twice as hard to work on for anything more than basic maintainance. But they're also much more fun so it'll be worth it. The engine rarely has to come out, even the less common issues that may occur can be cured with the engine in the car.
Now there's a stereotype...
They're not horrible to work on. The only thing mine's been in the shop so far was a throwout bearing (and clutch) replacement. Other than that I've done the 60k service, a few oil changes, S-belt replacement, throttlebody cleaning. A few other minor things.
If you find a good indy it's really not bad. I actually paid $300 less to have my clutch replaced than a buddy of mine paid for the same job in his Cavalier. And it was $1000 less than the P-Car dealer!
I wouldn't let the service scare you away. The tipping point for me when deciding to buy mine was someone on the forums saying "It's still a car. Not a UFO." to a very similar thread. Can't remember who it was, but it still makes me chuckle.
Besides. The thrill of owning one outweighs the more difficult maintenance, IMO.
