Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Okay so it was late tonight and I decided to tackle the range extending antenna remote modification (ie, add 130mm of wire to the end). On one of the instructions I had found, it said to strip the white wire back in addition to removing it from the foam overwrap. As I was stripping it, the white wire insulation bound up and snapped the antenna wire. It's a ragged end so I can't really even tell how much came off. My question: Ideally (ie, after the TSB is applied for optimum antenna length) how long is the antenna supposed to be from where it enters the thicker black sheath (the part with the heat shrink tube)? Thanks for any help or links to info. -Keith

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Tim, I was following the boxster wikia instructions but it was the ones from Alex that I was looking for. I'm not going to lie...it's still confusing as hell because because it's hard to tell exactly which 'shielding/insulation/wire length' is being discussed in any given instance. First you have the foam insulation which covers the wire bundle. Then you have the small white encased stranded antenna wire that sticks out. Then you have the thicker black encased woven shielded wire that comes from deeper in the harness. Is the small white stranded antenna wire supposed to be cut so that it's total length is ~130mm extending outside the shielded black cable? Or are you supposed to cut it to 130 mm as above and THEN add another 1690mm of wire (per Alex) or another 130mm (as per the TSB)? Since I had broken mine I had to resolder it so I made a complete antenna length of 260mm outside the black shielded cable. Maybe I'm overthinking it, it already seems to work a little better but it's still remarkably poor range compared to every other vehicle I've ever driven with a remote. Thanks for any additional info though, Keith

POST 4Original post

Keith, In the second link I posted above (the Renntech one) if you look at the 2nd pic (where he is measuring the white wire) at the far right you can see the white wire coming out of the black shielding. You may have to enlarge the pic to be able to see the black shielding. My take on it is the WHITE wire should be equal to 130mm. When I opened mine up, my while wire extended 130mm out of the black sleeve, so it was OK. However, some of the white wire had been inside the foam insulation, so I opened the foam insulation and taped the white wire on the outside of the foam insulation and put in back in the A pillar. My range increased to about 45 to 60 feet. Hope this helps.
