I had this problem when I first bought the car, and it turned out to be totally shot front tires.
Leading evidence: 'totally shot front tires' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'totally shot front tires' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). have encountered road surfaces that were so worn/bad that affected my car's feel to the point I had to pull over and check for a low/flat tire.

However, I would think that this symptom would change with different roads.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Happy New Year all!
I have my winter rims and tires on, and I've noticed while driving on the highway, the car is hard to keep in a straight line. It wants to dart all over the place when it hits ruts or bumps in the road. Pretty scary at high speeds!
I had this problem when I first bought the car, and it turned out to be totally shot front tires. The Pirelli Winter Sport tires I have on there now are like new though. Are "winter" tires less sure footed than summer tires?
A 996 should be solid as a rock when going 75-85 on the highway, right? What do you think my problem is? I drive the car so rarely, when I do drive it I want to feel confident, not scared!
Air pressure should be OK - I checked it last week. I'll double check it tonight.
As for folding over, I'm talking about driving in a straight line! Shouldn't be too hard for these N rated tires to do!
Did front tires that came with car show signs of wear from alignment? If so, an alignment is called for.
Since you apparently bought car used you likely don't know when car last aligned and if it was what the rep of the place that did the alignment is.
Given tires wear fast enough when alignment spot on I'd spend a few bucks and have alignment done at qualified shop. Get a *before* and *after* printout that shows the aligment setttings. I always do cause I always like to see what the old alignent was and if it was out by some margin that hints at steering or suspension troubles a-coming.
Sincerely,
Macster.
I noticed the same thing last year and found another thread somewhere . . .. I went with with narrower tires for winter, and i think they are tramlining (a term I found around here somewhere). I think they are trying to find the sweet spot in our old roads, and having problems.
Yeah, that was the term I was looking for! I had a whole thread on the subject a year and a half back when I bought the car.
My winter tires are stock 17" sizes, so they are not that much smaller than my summer tires.
It looks like the special "Davy Crockett Coon-Tail Spoiler" offered only on the '04's. I'm seriously thinking of sending it to Eric at Bumperplugs to have it painted.
Pretty funny Tim - this has to be in my top 5 favorites.
Andy, The only time I've had this sort of behavior was when the tire pressures were not set correctly - turned out that I had one or two tires that were not where they should have been.
You might as well send him your bumperettes while you are at it, because if the "Coon-Tail" gets painted, it is a requirement that the bumperettes also get painted.
I checked the pressure tonight, and maybe the two fronts were off by a pound.
I'm getting a vibration in the steering wheel at speed too, so I am thinking I need the fronts re-balanced. I'll bring it to STS tomorrow morning and see if that cures the problem. They worked OK last year, but I might have put the left on the right and visa versa - compounding the issue?
As already stated it is an out of balance wheel/alignment/tire pressure issue (or combinations of the afore mentioned). Probably not tramlining as this usually occurs when the tire is wider and grips better (going from winter to summer tires). Make sure the tire wheel/tire is balanced with the proper equipment (e.g., Hunter GSP9700).
but I watch people in other cars in parking lots and such and they pull car up and bump one or both front tires against curbs at end of parking space.
And I watch drivers who cut a corner too sharply and run rear and sometimes even front tire over curb pulling into (or out of) driveway. This subjects wheels/suspension and steering hardware to severe and sudden loads.
Then there are the horrible roads and potholes around. Hit one or two on last road trip that I thought for sure would have blown tires but fortunately they held and appeared no worse for the encounter.
All these work to affect the alignnment and not for the better.
Sincerely,
Macster.
have encountered road surfaces that were so worn/bad that affected my car's feel to the point I had to pull over and check for a low/flat tire.
Generally I would think snow tires less likely to be affected by these road surfaces but that could very well be the problem.
However, I would think that this symptom would change with different roads. Some roads affect my car's behavior/feeling (as I noted above) substantially yet other roads the car is unaffected and feels quite normal. If this the case with your car then I'd be inclined to blame the road and tramlining, but if symptom present on every road....all the time.... then air pressure, alignment, mounting of tire, or perhaps a worn/broken steering bushing/suspension component at fault.
Sincerely,
Macster.
Good description--with me it was clearly certain roads only. Roads i drove everyday. I also wondered if, given the MN winters, there was some frost heave of the roads involved too. Anyway, it went away when it warmed up and I went back to my summer tires.
