Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a quick question... I'm into the market for a 996 Porsche Exhaust System. My dealer (BoardWalk) in Dallas charge $2100 + $1000 installation which i think it's pretty expensive. Online I've checked usual places (Renn, AutoBahn, Ebay, Froogle, etc.) and the best price I can find is $1500 for new or approx. $1000 for used. Do you guys know of any other places to look for? Is it worth buying the OEM or should I look for another brand? I had a loan 996 C4S with OEM PSE whilst my car was being serviced and was pretty amazed by the sound... Finally - when it comes to installation should I do this at the official dealer or do you recommend some cheaper body shop or something? any pointers would be GREATLY appreciated... thanks rgds, SM

POST 2Original post

Do it yourself. It takes 2 hours tops w/o electronics!

POST 3Original post

$1399 at www.eagleday.com Includes all the electronincs and vacuum lines, except the dash board swith. Ask for Phillipe, mention my name (mike tungol). I have no affiliation, just a happy customer/outstanding service.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

mundman - I did ask Porsche Service at my dealer and they quoted 5h of work hence why it's $1000 installation. Apparenlty wiring is quite time consuming not sure if they are BS'ing or not.... anybody in dallas area that would be willing to help me out with proper compensation ofcourse

POST 5Original post

Do you need to switch the sound? A lot of guys do not even install the electrics.

POST 6Original post

I don't think the switch is needed - 3500 or below the noise is normal its above this the sound starts to build. pootling round my neighbourhood early morning etc is no issue

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I think the $1000 labour from Porsche was for standard PSE fitting (i.e. no switch).... I also agree on PSE not being loud below 3000rpm so it's not an issue for me...

POST 9Original post

SM, Yes, the switch/electronics install is whats gonna kill you on the labor hours. I can say that the majority of the folks here did not install the switch, and I'm one of them. We just left it in the 'sport' mode just because its not anoyingly loud system. Anyways, the muffler install is easy and can be easily done in your garage.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does this look complete to you? Is it worth buying 2nd hand or should I stick to brand new from dealer/porsche shop? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW thanks SM

POST 12Original post

You can DIY the mufflers in about 2 hours tops. When you do put in the mufflers, be sure to run the armored vacuum lines into the engine compartment for later on. The vacuum lines and the electrical connection are no big deal, and are actually very easy, just a little time consuming. when I did my PSEs, I broke the job into 3 steps that I did over the course of a week when I had time. The first is putting in the mufflers - 2 hrs - Instant gratification, as their default is the bypass condition. Next do the vacuum lines - 1 hr tops - Lastly do the wiring - about 1.5-2 hours. It goes easier if you mark all of the wires where they go, and have a schematic of the relay and jumper plug bracket. I can send you a PDF if you want. There are just 2 skinny wires that go back to the engine compartment, and there is already a grommet plug on the back deck of the car under the carpet and sound deadener. It is over the engine, that you just cut an X in and push the wires through, then add the connector on the end, plug it into the vacuum solenoid and you are done. There is much discussion over the merits of activating the bypass valve setup, with many choosing not to. As someone that has installed the whole system, I highly recommend it. The ability to quiet the exhaust is very useful in many situations. Unfortunately IMO the sound of the muffler below 2500 rpm is much the same as a car with a leaky exhaust manifold or a ricer honda. In stop and go traffic, it is nice to quiet it down.

Sunset Porsche in Oregon may have a pretty good price. Sunset Imports

POST 14Original post

Saw an ad in Pano last month for about $1400 including the switch. BTW, I paid my dealer here in Vegas $100 (1 hr labor) for the install plus $25 for new clamps for the sleeves.. They quoted me about 7-800 for full install with electronics which I declined and have never regretted it!

POST 15Original post

DIY was not an option (mechanically challenged). I had a local independent Porsche mechanic do it and I recall the charge was pretty reasonable, w/o electronics (perhaps around $250 or so, I'm not sure). I bought my unit from Brandywine Porsche for $1,500 last Fall, not sure if they have come down or gone up since then.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

FYI... Sunset porsche have quoted me $1379 (tax not included I believe). Will keep you posted if I find a better price...

Pioneer Porsche in San Diego has it for $1319.99. -Scott

POST 19Original post

$1500 and $250 for install seems to be a reasonable place to be anything lower than this is a bonus

POST 20Original post

You can do a search and there are many PSE threads. But in any case, somebody here paid $75 to Midas to install the mufflers (no electronics). It's REALLY simple and any Midas could do it in less than an hour. (I paid about $150 to my Porsche dealer to install mine on my former 996.)
