If you only have one car, I highly recommend outsourcing major detailing (I really didn't have the time, but once you start polishing, you're committed as you can't stop and leave it half done and unprotected)

If anyone is interested I can put together a list of all the things I used including equipment and chemicals.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

OK, so with the counsel of all the detailing pros over at the Autopia and Detailer's Domain forums and our very own CDodkin, and after buying an embarrassingly large amount of detailing product, I finally did the 996.
Did the black MB and white Audi first, as a warmup, in weeks previous, but finally worked up the nerve and time to tackle the P. Not for the meek or busy, or those who have to travel for proper garage space. It took me two days probably 4 hours each day, but this was a once a year thing and maintenance should now be a breeze.
The product list is just too long, but in a nutshell:
1. Washed car with dawn and optimum no rinse car wash to strip old wax, dried with water blade and absorber towel
1a. Clayed car with Zaino Z-18 Clay (didn't pick up much, although it was great on the other cars)
2. Masked off trim with blue painter's tape
3. Compounded deeper swirls and scratches with Menzerna PowerGloss and a little touch of Menzerna Final Finish using Ultimate Detailing Machine (UDM)
4. Polished entire car with Menzerna Super Intensive Polish on UDM
5. Finished with Menzerna Final Finish/Nano Polish on light finishing pad
6. Laid down a base of sealant using Ultima Paint Prep Plus on provided pad
7. Sealed with Ultima Paint Guard Plus on supplied microfiber sponge applicator
8. Washed wheels with Wurth wheel cleaner
9. Removed tape and cleaned all the polish dust out of the little nooks and crannies with a brush, q-tip and some alcohol.
10. Treated all rubber trim and door seals with Wurth Rubber Care stick
11. Sealed all trim, tires and wheels with Ultima Tire and Trim Guard Plus
12. Applied additional coat of sealant after 24 hours.
12a. Topped with Zaino Z8 "Grand Finale" spray on cotton sponge applicator
13. Polished exhaust tips with Simichrome and a polishing cloth, and sealed with Rejex.
Doesn't include all the washing and drying in between certain steps, wiping down with IPA between polishing steps to remove fillers, learning where many scratches I didn't know about were etc. I really liked learning how to do all this for myself, I'm sure a detailer would have wanted several hundred dollars per car here in NY, however it was way more work than I probably needed to be doing given that I promptly had a valet scratch my bumper. New York New York.
I did this about a week ago and while the car definitely looked great before hand it is now like a piece of glass. Ultra reflective, no swirls. Nothing I could do about deep scratches in certain spots, but it isn't a concours car and I drive it very very hard whenever I can. If anyone is interested I can put together a list of all the things I used including equipment and chemicals.
I will take more pics this week, but had to share (a lot of blackberry pics, please excuse)
You've done well. Congrats!
I did the same thing in the spring - spent about 8 hours one day doing pretty much all of those steps.
I'm glad to say that it's super easy to "maintain" that clean. Just a quick bath, maybe touch up a few spots with a clay bar, dry and reapply Ultimate Paint Polish the next morning.
Wow maybe some day when I am not chasing around a 4 yr old I would have time for that. You put the detail in detail! Good for you and I am sure a great feeling.
Thanks guys.

Some tasks involved have a peaceful, meditative quality to them, while others bring out the worst obsessive compulsive traits in me! I still don't feel like I'm done!
You were my inspiration on this, I'm really liking the Ultima PGP so far, hopefully if i keep wiping it on every week or two i can avoid another major detail for a good long while! Thanks!
It's very amazing stuff. Considering how much I put into the poilishing I couldn't have imagined another 5 steps for Zaino. I will say that you should try Zaino Z8 on top of the PGP sometime, it really gave me that dripping wet look and unlike carnaubas seems to stick to these nano-tech sealants
I know, I've been talking about it for months! I don't get private garage space and water often enough, have to head for the hills for all that kinda luxury! I'm loving the pressure washer and foam gun BTW
You've got X-ray vision Cory, I did miss one spot, the coil pack for Cyl#3, that's for Monday!
Thanks, it was a pain but I'm happy I did it. You know what I can't believe is how good it still looks after major long distance highway driving, rain etc.
this is a little blurry, but look at it after two weeks and 400 miles since the 2nd Ultima sealant coat, with not even a wash, and then another one after driving in torrential rain (garage pic).
