Suspected cause
A RUF supercharger on a Targa is probably the closest you'll get to "Factory".

I once went through this phase where i was having dreams that i thought would be the next big life changing inovation, but i could never remember what the concept was when I woke up in the morning.

Leading evidence: 'closest you'll get' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'closest you'll get' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace inovation' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
25 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

I have no idea what would be involved in such a crazy endeavor? Is this even possible mechanically? What about economically (allowing $10-15K for the project)?
I want the Targa soooo bad, but the 996TT is the monster I have been looking for for years!
Any help would be greatly apprecaited?
If it could be done it would probably cost every bit of your allowance and more than likely devalue the car by double that...don't do it man...get a turbo cab.
Cory's right, this should be a hot rod shop job. I think the challenges you may have will be:
1. How the TT chassis responds to the weight of the targa roof
2. Whether or not you'll need to move any reinforcements a targa might have
3. Is there room for motors etc (not knowing enough about where all the "works" are for the targa I can't say)
I think your better options are:
A) Buy a targa and supercharge the hell out of it (to offset the weight, cheapest option, can be uninstalled for resale)
B) Buy a turbo cab and a hardtop and make the best of it ($$$ but you get widebody and AWD)
The only reason I would even consider this is because it would be a "forever" car. Resale value not important. But yeah, it is starting to sound a little too ridiculous. . .I just LOVE the Targa idea. If Porsche had ever made a Targa turbo I would be all over it, even if I had to sell a kidney!
If you're organ-trafficking-interested, then do it by all means, custom cars only are worth what someone will pay for them, and the way prices are falling your roof transplant is unlikely to be the greatest contributor to depreciation. If it's the only turbo targa in existence, and the job is done well, then pride of ownership trumps depreciation every time. If not doing it means you will regret it, then make it happen. Better to die broke than unfulfilled.
HAHAHA
You had to have known there was something wrong with this idea when you started your question with "Don't laugh at me"
No harm done, we all get crazy ideas that apear to be good when we imagine them in our head. Then BAM! reality sets in.
I once went through this phase where i was having dreams that i thought would be the next big life changing inovation, but i could never remember what the concept was when I woke up in the morning. So i started to kept a note pad and pen on my night stand so I could write it down in the middle of the night if i woke up.
I will tell you this, I couldn't even decipher what i wrote the night before, pure jargon. Goes to show, we all have our moments of shame.
Now if you could whisper this idea into a Porsche engineers ear, I'm sure they could come up with a refined version that would blow our socks off.
Same thing happened to me, but when I woke up the next morning I read my note, remembered the concept, and it was good enough to get a patent and raise several million $ as a start-up.
Unfortunately, the company failed, so I think I might have been better off if I'd been like you, and not been able to read my handwriting!
Just sent you a PM but in the Sept 2006 issue of Total 911 there was an article about a UK owner who created a 993 Turbo Targa by essentially dropping a 993 Turbo S engine into a 993 Targa, then modifying the suspension, bodywork and other bits and pieces.
Certainly one of the more unique mods I've heard suggested, but certainly can understand the allure of the Targa
... and more power is always good.
Where would you get the targa top from? .... guess you could special order one from Porsche, or .... ok, my car is definitely getting locked in the garage at night in case there is a run on these mods
Would agree that the following would be your best options:
ps. the extra weight affects the Targa's time by .1 second 0-60 from the coupe's FWIW
Alright. . .so lets say I wake up from my dream and buy a 997S Targa, what would be the most efficient way of getting 996tt power into it? Supercharge, turbo's, or engine swap? What have people done to the 997S to get it up to 996tt power standards and still have it be a semi-reliable drive?
for the money, simplicity, ease of eventual removal, ease in future tuning etc, Supercharge it. I believe you'll want a 4S targa if you want a widebody and front diff (i.e. Turbo experience). You should be able to make 997TT power out of a 4S and a blower, more displacement, and I believe a little more headroom to redline
I believe the boys in the 997 forums will have plenty of advice
OK, this is going to sound far out (literally): it was a system for bouncing radio waves off of meteor trails. The earth gets hit by millions of meteors each day, but most are smaller than a grain of sand, and burn up in the upper atmosphere. When they burn up, they leave an ionized trail that acts as a mirror for radio waves, but it is 60 miles up in the sky. Imagine how far you could reach if you had a radio tower 60 miles high... that was the general idea. Of course, there are a *few* hitches, the most notable being that these trails only last a fraction of a second before they dissipate, so your data has to be sent through in a burst. (Not good for watching YouTube videos, or heck, even for a phone call!) But still useful for a lot of other things.... Obviously one has to be dreaming to come up with something this wacky!
Back to the subject at hand: I've had a EVOMS/VF Engineering supercharger on my 996 cab for several years now, including many track days. It is reliable and powerful, and I would recommend it as a way to get more power into a Targa.
VeloTech Automotive, in Paso Robles, CA has an "Old school" Targa roof that mounts to convertibles similar to the factory hardtop. Just add a Turbo cab and your set to go.
