Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Boys and Girls, I've got a very nice 2003 996 coupe that I bought CPO. I am at 65k and the warranty will expire soon anyways. (I think 5 years from delivery... October, 2003). I seem to recall Porsche offering a performance rebuild (taking the Carrera specs up close to the Carrera S specs) with a warranty. I cannot seem to locate that now. Any help? They still doing this for the 996 or was it abandoned when the 997s came out? Or, did I just dream it up anyways? What about Ruf? Do they have a performance engine rebuild that carries a powertrain warranty and will Porsche honor it, or do I have to send the car to Texas? Here is where I am at. I have a great little car that will soon be paid off. I am still 18 months to 2 years out on mileage, but I'd rather have a nice rebuild (at about 100k, and that carries a powertrain warranty than sell the car), than continue to run it with the risk of a huge blow up that is not covered. To give you some perspective, my car is a spirited street car and I am happy with the 325 hp or so that is stock. I'd probably enjoy the extra hp at about the level of a 996 S, but frankly, much more would be wasted on me and my skill set. (I drive the car fairly sedate most of the time but stretch it out every now and then. By no means have I ever driven it harsh, and I don't think I've ever come close to redline). Before you flame me, no, I am not a wussy! I've broken 100 mph. OK?!!! Seriously, the car is a daily driver that I have some fun with on an occasional curvy road. I bought in 2005 with 11k and now has 65k... So, I am looking for something serviceable... Not a high-strung performer, or a garage queen. Finally, I am in Atlanta and would prefer to be able to reguarly service the car, or have warranty work honored locally. (Guess I am spoiled by Hennessy). With those parameters in mind, any help? Thanks in advance, JKC

POST 2Original post

I'm not sure you really have any issue with the car as it is. You may never need an engine rebuild, and that would cost you as much or probably more than replacing the engine, assuming Porsche is still doing the rebuild replacements with 996s. But, if your heart is set on it, Roock is off Howell Mill Rd and I75, they are capable and Kinesis Motorsports in Buford, near lake Lanier on Holiday Rd would be a good place to have most anything done you want. Neither place would be cheap, but they would warranty their work. I have an MY2000 with a lot more than 65k miles and it seems no different to me than it did with 30k miles. As long as you are putting miles on the car, and you've had no major issues at 65k, it really sounds to me like you have a good car. It could go 200k miles without a rebuild as long as you keep driving it. The jury is still out on these cars compared to older versions, but I've had Porsches for 30+ years and I've found a good one is a great car, a bad one will break your heart and empty your wallet. The bad ones usually show their colors early and often. Just my .02

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the reply. I am just scared of going outside of warranty and would almost rather spend the big bucks once when I can plan for it. But you make a few good points. It is a nice little car, albeit, not the lasted, greatest and fastest. JKC

POST 4Original post

that's kinda how I feel as well. My plan is to drive it until it has to be rebuilt, then go with a blower. I went that route once before on an SC. It was bad fast, and I spent a fortune, but I loved that car
