Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. You slip the sensor (blade) into the radiator fins and then adjust the controller to what temp you want the fans to come on.
Leading evidence: 'Adjust controller' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust controller' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Is there really a problem with these engines running 102 degrees?

All trackers should be running the engine compartment fan at all times.

I read somewhere that the optimal running temperature range on these cars is 83-95 degrees.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

OK. It's summertime down south, in case you haven't noticed
My car runs around 95 degrees as long as I drive it on open roads. When I hit the traffic and stop lights, it's up to 100-102 and the fans is coming on. I just feel 100 degrees + is high for the engine and am seriously considering doing 1999Porsch911's fan relay mod as I would like to see the fans come on at 95 degrees.
My question: am I being too ****? Is there really a problem with these engines running 102 degrees? I read somewhere that the optimal running temperature range on these cars is 83-95 degrees. My car never gets over 102, but that just seems high.
Also, if anyone's done this mod, was it hard to do? Did it solve the traffic heating issue (that's assuming it IS an issue).
I believe the confusion here is whether we're talking celcius or fahrenheit.
95 degrees C translates to 203 F. I have seen 112 C last weekend at the track with ambient temps around 100F.
I am installing a 3rd radiator soon! This should bring coolant temps down by 5-10 degrees C.

I think the 3rd radiator is a great idea for track use. But I don't track the 996, so was hoping a simple (and cheaper) fan mod may do the trick of reducing the in traffic temp to maybe below 100?
Joost, Let me know how the 3rd radiator works?
Pat,
1. I would consider taking the front bumper off and wash out the Radiator if you have never done that. I did it last year and it made a world of difference.
2. The AC radiator is in front of the engine radiator so only the bottom of the engine radiator gets cooled directly by air. Check to see if there is debris on the bottom that you can suck out with a vaccum cleaner first.
I just cleaned that out because my temp looked higher. Its amazing what few leaves and road trash can do to your engine temp.

Sure way to see that the fan mod works is just jump the #85 pin on each of the high speed relays and ground them under the dash. Fans will run whenevever the car is running. About 10 minutes of work. If you don't like it, remove the wires and you are back to where you are now.
Many trackers run with this mod and maintain temperatures around 200F. All trackers should be running the engine compartment fan at all times.

Were you able to use the DYI on this site? Were you able to do it by yourself?
1999Porsche911:
Thanks, I'll go back and reread your dyi. I just think 200 degrees is better than 212+. At least I could run it when I know I'm going to be in heavy traffic.
For $40, you can go to Autozone and buy a thermostatically-controlled relay as another alternative. You slip the sensor (blade) into the radiator fins and then adjust the controller to what temp you want the fans to come on.
1999porsche911
is that mod also applicable for the 3.6 liter engine? my water temps seem to get high during the summer when I AutoX. My in car thermostat reads around the middle of the 0 in the 180 deg mark
Thanks..
Yup. Don't forget that the engine compartment fan can also reduce engine temps by a few more degrees. Obviously, the others recommendations here, such as making sure there is no debris blocking the radiators should be done also. You can install a switch, hook it to a sensor for automatic operation, change the resister in the wiring, control it by the speed sensor, etc., etc. Just depends how much work you want to put into it. I just have a seperate switch for the front fans and engine fan.
