This is not a probability of success.

I have test driven a 1999 carrera 2 tiptronic but really was not thrilled with the experience, albeit I was not versed in the controls at all.

The 2000 + models allow you to use the buttons while still in "A" mode.

For the fun stuff, it is easy to flip into "M" mode and use the steering wheel buttons.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello,
I have been browsing the forum as I am in the mkt for a 911 carrera, and I appreciate the generosity and the exchange of information from its members...
I currently own an Acura NSX (5 speed / red -blk / for sale) and have really enjoyed the car for the last several years, yet couple points have come up that has me searching for a Porsche.
1. kids!! Having a back seat would do wonders for my driving time (i.e. not having to drive the suv..)
2. wife! Does not want to learn to drive a 5 speed ; something about stalling on hills when we actually live in Kansas...
3. Porsche has been one of my dream cars for a long time.
So, I am very interested in a 996 tiptronic. My question is what is the drop off in performance from a tiptronic to a manual? I have test driven a 1999 carrera 2 tiptronic but really was not thrilled with the experience, albeit I was not versed in the controls at all. So I would be interested in hearing opinions from members with tiptronic experience as well as members who have switched from tip to manual.
Secondly, is there a big difference from 2000 model to a 2001? From reading this site, I have ruled out the 1999 for fear of 1st year bugs...
I also wanted to introduce myself and hope to be a valuable member and a porsche owner soon.
Thanks,
Mike K.
I gave up 20+ years of rowing gears for the tiptronic. It isn't for everyone, but I do like it. 90% of my driving is brain dead, and "A" mode is just fine for that. For the fun stuff, it is easy to flip into "M" mode and use the steering wheel buttons.
There was a significant change in the tiptronic from 1999 to 2000. The 2000 + models allow you to use the buttons while still in "A" mode. This is really convenient for a quick downshift in the middle of otherwise boring driving. The transmission automatically reverts to auto shifting after ~ 10 seconds.
Like I said, I'm very happy with it, but it isn't for everyone.

Spend a few hours in each, my next car will be a manual Ferrari, but only for those "special" days...for now I enjoy the Tip.
Cheers
