Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

When I pull in the garage after normal driving I'm getting an oil burning smell. No oil leaks but I've had the RMS issues twice now. Any idea what's causing this smell? Could oil be leaking somewhere but not reaching the floor?

POST 2Original post

I had this problem and it was a cam cover leaking...

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Robyn, I'll have it checked out.

POST 5Original post

Anyone has a picture of the cam cover area where I should be looking, or is it something that needs to be looked at by a mechanic?

POST 6Original post

Here's an ignorant expanation of the problem you may have... I had oil leaking on the exhuast manifold on the driver's side. It was difficult to determine exactly where the oil leak originated, so I left it up to my local independant shop to diagnose and fix. Here's how they explained the problem.... There are plastic tubes that provide a path for the lead from the coil pack to the spark plugs. The tubes are mounted through holes in the cam cover. An o-ring is used to create the seal between the tube and cam cover. One of the o-rings was leaking. The shop replaced the o-ring and charged me an hour labor. Total repair bill was $102.

POST 7Original post

I know on the 1999's. there is a TSB for the o-rings on these tubes. I only found 2 that were leaking and I replaced it with an o ring I bought from ACE hardware. Too lazy to go to the dealer. That was more than 35,000 miles ago.

POST 8Original post

This was good info! I have a '99 too and I just called to make an appointment to have this oil smell looked into. My car is a Porsche Certified car so I hope this is covered.
