On a drive at about 40MPH I heard a metal clicking rubbing on something comming from the rear 4th cylinder. My repair shop changed all the tappets because #4 was soft when he pushed it in. Now the noise is not comming from #4 but near the area. He called a dealer and was told it could be the chain tensioners or the oil pump on the outside near #4. I just had new valve cover seals repaired 2 weeks ago and have 51K miles on the engine. It sounds like a chain that is hitting something to my untrained ear. Has anyone had any problems like this with their 1999 996 ? Or do I need to find a more experienced repair facility ?

I called a dealer who said it may be the intermideate shaft has a broken end. Because now after changing the chain tensioner the same noise is still evident. So it looks like here goes $6,767.00 for a new rebuilt 3.4 engine and $1,600 to install.
