Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey what is the trick to removing the hood release handle? I popped off the 3 tiny plugs and i cant seem to figure out how to pull off the plastic shroud around the handles. Any tips?

POST 2Original post

what cha doin' refinishing them due to scratches?

POST 4Original post

I have seen a DIY removal write up for it, but dont recall where... there are screws on the side near the seat IIRC - then the plasctic comes free... I actually had th e think "where is the hood opener"

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

found it. i always forget about renntech. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index...emovalinstall/

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

too bad i have to find an allen wrench that is short enough.... ugh..

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 7627063

Once you get them off, how are you planning to do the refinish?

POST 8Original post

that stupid tutorial didnt tell me anything on how to repair them good find, Loren is the man!

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

i will let you all know. im in the process of sanding and painting the handle. i will post an update when im finished..

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

i dont think there is any saving the little decal on it..

POST 11Original post

I'm interested to find out how you go as mine is also a bit used looking. Looking forward to your next post

POST 12Original post

Ive been pondering on how to do this too....I was gonna plasti-coat my door handles and hood/trunk release to a satin black.

POST 13Original post

I lost the little decals, but it was well worth it since they are very expensive to replace. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...e-latches.html

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm hoping that i only need to paint one, it depends how well the paint matches..

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Okay this is what i did. The scratches were extremely deep on the hood handle. I ended using aircraft remover (aka super paint stripper) to strip the paint and primer off the handle down to the bare metal. Sorry i forgot to take a picture of that. After i stripped it, I used a power sander with 80 grit then to 120 grit. I primed the bare metal and then wet sanded it with 800 grit until smooth. After the handle dried from the water I used Rustoleum silver paint . A few light coats later i spray the handle using Rustoleum Clear coat enamel. One light coat and two nice medium coats until the part was glossy. Currently I am waiting for the paint to dry and I will post an update on the durability of the paint. Note: The factory paint is slightly lighter than the Rustoleum silver, I will wait until it is dry and compare them in the car. The picture I took does not do the new paint any justice (it looks darker in the photo)

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

after looking at the two, i think i am going to refinish the other handle.... i wish i could have matched the factory silver. oh well.

POST 19Original post

Thanks for the photos and tips. You have improved the look dramatically, too bad the paint didn't match better, I agree, you'll have to paint the other latch as well.Nice job.

POST 20Original post

sorry ride - I was tired what I meant to say is "Not Bad!" As in Wow, looks good! (as in the color matching the factory) I am sorry I wrote that wrong and didnt mean to cause any bad feelings or make you feel as if it was a bad job.. I think it looks great at one point I thought about making new handles and offering them for sale - there are many aluminum items like pedals and foot rests, but no one seems to have gone thru the effort to make some cool hood/trunk pulls... I lost interest based on complexity and time but still think if someone made some clool looking replacements they would sell... the only other option it factory new or to do as you have done.... anyhow LOOKIN' GOOD !!

POST 21Original post

I re-did mine in place, masked, taped, newspaper everywhere. I found out you CANNOT clear coat them. The aluminum when applied looked a near perfect match to the factory aluminum color, I sprayed on the clear and the color turned gray. I wiped them off with acetone got all the paint off and just sprayed with a few light coats of aluminum paint. They look really good and if I didn't know better I'd think they came that way. Moral of the story, no clear coat.

i cant believe you did them inside the car... sounds like it would have been a mess.

POST 24Original post

yea, I agree... I was thinking of removing my carpets and painting the floor... had the same worries, BUT I have seen it done by other RL'ers so I suppose .....

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Here is a picture of the handle before primer. Now after both are done and installed.

POST 26Original post

Now if you could get those pesky little decals...

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

yea but i can figure out which opens which...

POST 28Original post

This is my 996 that was done with the handles in place. Everything was covered with newspaper and making tape. And here is the result. I rest my case!

POST 29 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

that's wild... why wouldn't you just pop them off?

POST 30Original post

Interesting... didn't know there were actual levers on the older models. My '04 has two little switches to pop open the frunk and the trunk.
