Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

20 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My intro: I've lurked for several years on this forum and have dreamed of a 911 since I was a little kid. I'm also an SCCA autox junkie at heart, and the only 911s that are competitive in SCCA stock are the 993 and the 996 GT3. The 993 was too old for me and the 996 GT3 is perfect except I need back seats for my lovable kids (not impossible to retrofit, but difficult to find / expensive to do). SCCA released a new stock class (AS) this year which theoretically makes the 996 Anniversary competitive. So I sold my RX-8 and purchased a 996 Anniversary #646. All the standard anniversary options except for nav. From an out of state dealer in Texas. Delivery: Rather than driving 14 hrs, I chose to deliver my car without being critical of the transport company. That was a mistake. It was suppose to arrive almost 4 weeks ago. The transport guy in Texas used a ramp that was too steep and damaged the undersurface of the car. After alot of insurance hassle, parts hassle, out of town dealership hassle, etc, my car is finally here in good health. Mods I purchased while waiting for delivery: Recaro Vivo toddler seats for my kids. 19" Gunmetal Volk TE37s. Questions: How is the exhaust on this X51 car different from stock or from the optional PSE? Does PSE add any additional hp? Could the OEM 996 short shift kit be ordered from the factory for this car? Could the OEM Turbo or GT3 8.5"' / 11" wide wheels be ordered from the factory for this car? Could the OEM PCCB brakes be ordered from the factory for this car? Recommendations for floor mats? Any anchors for floor mats? There is a weird antenna on the passenger front windshield and a weird black box in the passenger foot well. Any ideas what these are?

POST 2Original post

Gorgeous car! Sorry can't help re: your questions though. Enjoy in health!

POST 3Original post

Can the kids ride with you while racing? Great car you picked up. You'll find a difference in the breaking loose of the car and hopefully be able to get enough seat time in different conditions to get good and settled in with the cars handling. The 996 might just be the best family car for kids. Welcome to the show. Oh yah. Ask a dealer about the what could be ordered for the car. Also there are plenty of mats the anchor in. Mine have snap on straps the co to the seat rail area. Many have like a velcro to the bottom type of arrangement. Right now the brand slips my mind. Somebody will be able to answer which is best or I'll try to remember to check what mine are.

POST 4Original post

Nice car, I also run mu 911s at SCCA events, and you are right, the 40th anniversary car look like the best choice for AS. How is the exhaust on this X51 car different from stock or from the optional PSE? Does PSE add any additional hp? The exhaust is the same, the headers are different, there is basically no HP gain, maybe 1-2hp.. Could the OEM 996 short shift kit be ordered from the factory for this car? Yes it could, I recomend getting the 997 Short Shift kit, you will love it! Could the OEM Turbo or GT3 8.5"' / 11" wide wheels be ordered from the factory for this car? NO, this would make your car illegal for AS, still you can fit 245 at the front and 305 at the back easily, just make sure you opush the front struts all the way in at the front to gain max camber. Could the OEM PCCB brakes be ordered from the factory for this car? NO Recommendations for floor mats? Any anchors for floor mats? get the OEM ones, look on ebay... There is a weird antenna on the passenger front windshield and a weird black box in the passenger foot well. Any ideas what these are? NO idea, take pics...

POST 6Original post

welcome, sorry for the troubles, hope that is all behnd you ! post #4 answered the questions pretty much exactly how I would too with one exception, dont just get the 997 SSK, get the entire 997 shift assy.... its much smoother enjoy in good health - I assume you are changing the wheels to save the OEM's from track stress....

POST 8Original post

Nice looking car. Thanks for the pics! Too bad about the damage by the carrier.

So does this 996 Anniversary already have a PSE? If so, where is the button? My 996 Tequipment guide also lists a Sport Techno (18x8,18x11) as an option for my car. Could that be ordered from the factory? (Trying to get the widest wheels possible for SCCA stock which only allows wheels ordered from the factory, not dealership add ons...) Ideally, I will have summer wheels (volk 19") winter wheels (stock 18") and race wheels (lightweight, wide, 18"). For now, I'll start with mounting my race rubber on the stock 18s... My car is definitely a DD (winter too) that hopefully will get wrung out on the occasional autocross weekend.

It didn't come with PSE. Rennlist member Livenupe retrofitted (and later took it off) PSE to his 40th. He used one of the buttons on the dash if memory serves me correctly.

POST 13Original post

I just got this book for my birthday. 2" thick with a WHOLE bunch of good info. Don't know how I lived without it.

It certainly is the bible for the 996. i bought the 993 book as well and that is equally impressive. I could do without the goofy author commentary though.

POST 15Original post

The 40th came with better headers but with the same mufflers as a normal 996, the PSE was still an option. What I meant was that PSE does not add HP, but you could do the PSE Mod if you wanted to; in AS the exhaust is free. I am not sure about the wheels but if they were available as an option then you can use them, but just FYI the wheels your car came with are the lightest OEM wheels available for your car

Here are the pics. 1) Any ideas what they are? 2) Also, how do you know if you have the handsfree phone option? 3) Final dumb question, how do you lock the doors from the inside? Thanks!

POST 18Original post

Top right section of center dash has an oval rocker button with a key icon. I think its the second one down on the right if the labels are missing. The strange box and stuff I have no idea. I accidently double locked my car dooe right before unlocking it one day when I was checking if I had left the car unlocked. When I got in and shut the door the car doors locked with the light on the rocker showing red. I wasn't able to reproduce the same thing but it happened none the less. Strange for sure.

POST 19Original post

the box is the speaker for old school hands free phone cradles. i had those in the 90's... the strip on the windshield looks like an external antenna or signal amplifier - again something we used to use in the 80's and 90's for AMPS based phones - not used anymore. Both can be safely removed.

Any ideas if I can use this setup with my current bluetooth Droid phone? It looks like there is a mic installed next to the sunroof too. If not, and I chose to remove it, what do I do with the buried cables? Thanks!
