Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that contain suggestions
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
Your best approach is see if he has been having the car serviced AND get the car checked out at a porsche dealer for inspection with one definite expressed check of the transmission for fluid level and its health after the symptoms have been going on.
Leading evidence: 'Check of the transmission' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check of the transmission' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm looking at a '99 that according to the owner has a Tip that "slips" especially when cold. 110,000 miles and decent other than that. I'm checking out the car in a couple of days and am wondering:
1. If is is unusual for a 993 110K tranny to be bad?
2. Could it be something as simple as fluid change?
3. Can they be adj or is it pretty much exchange city?
Thanks in Adv
Transmissions are expensive and porsche is the only one selling them.
Feeling lucky I'm thinking with the symptoms described it might be low trans fluid where after it heats up expanding the fluid to where it has more volume so that the trans works. It's a sealed system and the only way to check it is pull the plug on the side of the trans and stick your finger down in there to feel if fluid is up to the level of the side filler plug.

If the car is in good condition and everything else seems strong....figure in about $3200(DIY) for a new transmission in the price and maybe..just maybe youll be lucky enough to have low fluid in the trans.
They are. Installed, more like $13k.
And they don't sell parts. Rebuilt unit out of the OEM is all you get, going through Porsche.
Perhaps your indy can do better. There is no "repairing" them. only replacement.
Ask me how I know.............If you must.
Are there any codes? CEL on? There are numerous things that can cause problems that do not require a new transmission. As an example, pressure regulator 4 can fail causing a CLC lockup not to work. This could be interpreted as slipping since the converter doesn't lockup as expected (about a $500 fix).
Another example, if the brake light switch is intermittent, the automatic downshift does not work properly.
Yet another, if a wheel speed sensor fails (P1710 right front or P1715, left front), then your tip shift buttons on the steering wheel will not work.
You do have options for a rebuilt unit out there with the updated ZF parts.
