Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

If this one drains, I guess I will have to bring it in and check for a drain.

I just replaced the battery on my 2000 996 because it would no longer hold a full charge.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Are there any commonly known sources on the 996 that could be draining the battery? THKS Johannes E.

POST 2Original post

I just replaced the battery on my 2000 996 because it would no longer hold a full charge. If I leave it locked for 3 weeks straight without being on the trickle charger it always gets the battery down (it will start, but clearly there is less power there). Might be time for a new battery, 5 years is a normal replacement time.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thing is I replaced it (original Porsche part) two weeks ago and have only driven the car twice for short runs since, and this new battery has also gone flat . Production was 2003 week 14 so the dealer replaced it again free of charge. I have been told by a friend that works as a BMW tech, that even new batteries must be charged prior to installation to work troublefree, since they loose their charge while sitting on the shelf. New battery (produced late 2003) will go in tomorrow after a topup charge overnight. If this one drains, I guess I will have to bring it in and check for a drain. Ciao, Johannes E.

POST 4Original post

If your alternator is working, your voltage meter should show above 12 volts. If it isn't working, then it will show a flat 12. Then the fun begins. Sounds like this isn't your problem though. Doesn't everyone have a trickle charger for their 996? Couldn't be without mine, but I live in a small town. Good luck.

POST 5Original post

What is the acceptable amperage drain on the battery?

POST 6Original post

The most common cause of a draining battery is leaving the key in the ingnition. I park mine sometimes for 4, 5, 6 weeks and starts right up. $48 battery from Sam's club. If your voltage gauge is not showing 14 or very close to that, you have a charging problem.
