A minor but persistent annoyance on these road drives has been a metallic "tinkling" sound in the cabin, presumably when I'm running over sand/pebbles/road debris.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Last spring I had a GMG World Challenge roll/harness bar installed, along with harnesses and GT3 seats, in my '03 C4S. It's not my DD but I take it out on weekends for "spirited" drives on nearby mountain roads. A minor but persistent annoyance on these road drives has been a metallic "tinkling" sound in the cabin, presumably when I'm running over sand/pebbles/road debris. The sound seems to transmit thru the roll bar tubing and thus gets amplified and "metallicized" (new word!). This is a bolt-in roll bar; I also removed the rear seats. Has anyone else experienced this? Tips for quieting things down? By the way, it's not an issue on the track - presumably because there's much less surface debris, and/or because I'm too busy having fun and stomping on it to notice.

POST 2Original post

I think Ford had this same problem about 5 years ago with the drive shaft tube on their F150 (or F250/F350?) trucks. The solution was to pack the hollow drive shaft tube with a well balanced fiber insulation. The same thing would probably work for you too. Get some foam or pink insulation, lightly pack it into the roll bar and reinstall. I bet that would damper the noise.

POST 3Original post

remove more sound dampening and you wont hear those pesky metallicized sand storms nearly as much

POST 4Original post

Wrap the whole bar with roll bar foam or have it covered with leather. Open cell will make it quieter but is only "legal" for non-contact areas. Closed (harder) foam should be used for "contact" areas.

POST 5Original post

I never noticed extra noise in my caged STi. The only downside was how hot the cage would get in the summer and cold in the winter. I don't think that the rear seat removal in a 996 would have any effect on noise.

POST 6Original post

could be a rouge nut or bolt inside the cage tubing.
