Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I coasted to the right shoulder, checked for traffic, and jumped out to push it as close to the k-rail as I dared before walking a safe distance from my poor C4 and calling AAA to flatbed the poor girl to Black Forest.
Leading evidence: 'fuel pump' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'fuel pump' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check traffic, and jumped out' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

if no noise and just shut off I suspect fuel or electrical - not mechanical

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Yesterday, heading home for lunch, cruising along in the 911 lane (the fast one), when revs, oil pressure drop to zero. I coasted to the right shoulder, checked for traffic, and jumped out to push it as close to the k-rail as I dared before walking a safe distance from my poor C4 and calling AAA to flatbed the poor girl to Black Forest.

And the winner is...
Three votes for the winning fault: fuel pump crapped out. It's good to know I'm not the only one thinking that JC and the Mayans are after me... thanks for validating my paranoia.
yep probably the ignition switch we hope. What were the key socket syptoms? Did it have slack before engaging the internals? Have you thought maybe you saw something light on the dash and look to see nothing? That's the gremlins playing around there. Anyway I'd really be prone to think ignition switch if the dash lights weren't lit when it shutdown and the key seemed to be easy to turn. I got into my car one night and turned the key to start but when the starter engaged the darn key kept going and everything shut down with no results from anything and played heck getting a good position to remove the key. Although to the day in history your engine died at the same time american bombers bombed the location where porsches are made
Have you been hanging out with Al Roker recently?
Lots of fuel pumps dying these days, this would be a good cause, maybe a new pump brings a performance boost!
Battery lead disconnected? Not likely but a quick check would be in order. Thats if all power went to the dash. Then into the ignition fix. Again a cheap DIY replacement fix wouldnt go amiss. You didn't say if all power had gone off the dash. Did you check if the lights were still working? If they are then gas filter then pump etc. Hope you sort things out.
The ignition switch is a known failure item on this generation of Porsche's. But when I've seen them fail it was in the can't start it context.
If Porsche diagnostics don't point to anything you might check the fuel filter and / or drain the tank (if something was floating around.
BUT
- If you jump started the car and reversed the leads, you can damage the DME in such a way that it will work but fail under certain conditions. But I'm pretty sure that diagnostics would show this.
So, it was the fuel pump. There was no noise, no puddle of oil, and the engine cranked freely after quitting but didn't start, so I was fairly confident it wasn't IMSB. I was happy to get the call from the shop with the definitive fuel pump diagnosis.
Thanks! It was love at first sight... I wasn't even looking to replace my Boxster when I happened upon the dealer listing for my 996. It just oozes 911-ness, and I was powerless to resist.
