I had a dealer run the service history before purchase and that did not show up, so I'm thinking an indy did it somewhere.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello all,
last night as I was engrossed in everything Porsche I decided for the fun of it to see if my Motor number matched the hood and manual. It did not, now I'm wondering what I have here. I had a dealer run the service history before purchase and that did not show up, so I'm thinking an indy did it somewhere. As my car was delivered 7/98 it could be a good thing as the very early cars like mine had the most issues. Car runs great and I could care less that the motor was changed, but I would like to know when, where, and how many miles are on it. Does anyone know a way to run the motor # to find out more info?

Adrian's book - the 996 Essential Companion list the Engine No. year type Serial No Groups.
A 98 model should be 66W00501 & Up - 99 is 66X 0r 68X (C4) - 2000 model is 66Y - 2001 is 66100001 & up but these are the 3.6. So though this will not tell you how old or mileage, you might see the approx age of the motor. If it is an X or Y it is a later 3.4. If it is a 66W it could have been returned to Factory and reconditioned and installed a few years latter. Compare the Eng number - last 5 digits to production numbers and you can guess age.
OK then I take it the number is also on the options sticker.
I also didn't know the number is in the owners manual either. Is it in the owners manual or do you mean some other after market manual?
My original engine was serial # 66W08106 which means a early (98) motor. The current engine is serial AT66X65750. I have no previous records on the car, it has 125K miles, no oil leaks, and runs like a scalded dog. According to you all this is a factory rebuilt engine and serial number 65,750, Did they really make 65,000+ rebuilt engines?
Where did you get info that the rebuilts have the AT designation?
Adrian's book - the 996 Essential Companion says the rebuilt motors have an "X" designation (before or after S/N, not sure) in the serial number?
Any help to sort my confusion would be healpful. Thanks!
