Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok so I am vintage Porsche owner with lots of experience, with these amazing cars. Unfortunately none of my experience relates to the 996. I am thinking of buying a 996, 1999-2000 year. I have been doing lots of research, and one of the things that scares me the most is the engine failure. Now I understand what causes it, however I was wonder what the consensus was in terms of avg millage that this occurs. Most of what I have read states that a car with low miles might actually be less desirable than one the high miles? I plan on getting a warranty so I hope it would cover any catastrophic loss! Other questions include; How long with this motor last? 200,000? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Oh boy - here we go again. I will not touch this thread with a 10 foot pole. Welcome aboard - I would suggest you do a search for "replacement engine" or "WTB" (what to buy) posted recently. You can get lots of opinions there about what to buy and about what everyone thinks about engine failures. Seems to be that the guys who have had no problems think/preach that the motors are bulletproof, and guys who have had to come out of pocket $7-11K for a replacement are the bitter ones. Low miles, high miles, doesn't really matter if you are buying the warranty. Ther is no "safe" mileage. Failure occurs on cars with 50K (like mine) and on cars with 100K. Sound advice is to buy the newest model you can afford. Good luck

Or just buy the one you like and drive it. Worrying all the time will kill you early. Sure, your engine could grenade tomorrow. But you could also get sideswiped by a dump truck tomorrow. Screw it: Drive.
