Because they produce alot of heat while running they can melt and burn rubber or plastic trim when they come into contact with it.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am giving a try at the porter cable but I see this thing is gonna kills all the rubber on the car and spread dust all over. I already thing my rubber aroudn windows are looking pretty dull, I don't want them to look even worst. I was trying to use some blue painter tape to mask, see pic below, but while removing it I see that a good amount of rubber is leaving with the tape. What are you guys doing about covering area during polishing ? and which tape do you use...if any ... ?

POST 2Original post

being careful not to hit the rubber you could try in the concourse section too or click this link to get started be ready to read some!! LINKY LINK

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks for the links this one would be answer to my question: http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forums...ht=hand+polish pretty much two hours just to tape it all ...

POST 4Original post

Yea, and 5 more to read that thread I sent about 6 hours on my paint this last Saturday and I'm not even doing all the steps. There is a lot too it all! Hope the link keeps ya reading and learning, pics required

POST 5Original post

Griot's has a product that gets the wax off of the rubber. Take a peek. http://www.griotsgarage.com/product/...wax+remover.do Good Luck

POST 6Original post

There's two reasons to tape when you're doing polishing work. The primary reason is to not burn rubber and plastic trim when using a rotary buffer. Because they produce alot of heat while running they can melt and burn rubber or plastic trim when they come into contact with it. This ISN'T an issue with a porter cable. The only issue you'll have when using your porter cable is getting wax or polish residue on those rubber parts or out of cracks and crevices. With a little attention to detail and knowing where you can and cannot use your porter cable there's really no need to tape when using one. The residue you're seeing come up with the tape looks more like dirt than anything else. When was the last time you cleaned your rubber seals?

POST 7Original post

I use blue painter's tape too. Works great. The residue in your picture is just dirt...not rubber coming off. I'd not worry about it. It's good to have 2 different width tapes too. Helps in tight areas. Also tape-off your badge and sunroof felt seal, and clear bra edges.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 7638762

+1 For taping off the clear bra. I boogered one up on my '86 Carrera. Thank God the car was black and was not that noticeable.

POST 9Original post

+1 that's either dirt or some type of dressing, there are a variety of trim protectants you can use to achieve a glossy look on seals if so desired. I have to say that I used to use painters tape with a random orbital, but haven't in a while.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 7638908

The old car pics are on the home computer. I will post tonight on this thread. Sure hope big brother isn't watching me type this at work!

POST 12Original post

I agree with others about "it" not being rubber but dirt or residue of some sort. Also, try different brands of "blue tape" as they are not all created equal!

POST 14Original post

The 3M Blue Painter's Tape at places like Home Depot is very good. I have also seen a green 3M tape at auto parts stores. Don't remember the name of that tape.

POST 16Original post

Instead of taping over the wiper blades, is there an easy ways to remove them?

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have no idea when the car was last detailed. Just bought it two month ago. I am working the clay bar right now, so hopefully pics end of the week LOL any recommendation on rubber/seals rejuvenation products ? I've seen many products but I am always afraid they will do more bad than good. they all look great the first 6 hours but after that they get sticky and nasty.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 7639601

I've actually found suprisingly good results from a cleaning standpoint from using an All-in-one type of product. Meguiars ColorX is one that you can get at most auto parts stores. Meguiars sells a gold class rubber trim cleaner too but alot of retailers still don't carry it. If you're ordering on-line Klasse AIO is a must-have product. You can use it for most anything...hell I'm suprised I don't clean my food with it before I eat. For conditioning of the seals there's nothing better than 1z Gummi Pflege. It's all I use anymore.

POST 19Original post

Klasse AIO been meaning to try this, but got the Mequiars instead because I am great at impulse buying off the shelf

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 7639662

Plus Juan for ColorX. Then after 24 hours, throw in a coat of Meguiar's NXT Tech Wax or Gold Class. /m
