Came to a stop light, he was right next to me, I back up about 1/2 a car to see which model SL...it was the new 550.

Another guy I work with owns a Z and he's always talking about how we should "run 'em." Sheesh.

I had one schmuck damn near run me off the road trying to bait me into a race.

I just think it's really sick that they can keep engineering a rear-engine car to run so well.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Spring like weather today in Toronto. Took my P car out for a spin...just cruising along. About to go round a bend I see a Benze SL coming fast up my s from the rear view. A quick blep, downshift to second, took the corner and now the Benze is trying to catch me.
Came to a stop light, he was right next to me, I back up about 1/2 a car to see which model SL...it was the new 550. The light turn green and he took off, I couldn't pass him...we were doing about 120km and I was late on my shift both 1st and 2nd gear, fuel cut off..wasn;t paying attention to the rev. When he had to turn off, he gave me a dirty grin. The new 7 speed auto has an advantage I guess.
I'm not a happy camper.

Why be mad....he paid almost twice what you did probably....he should have a SLIGHT advantage right? lol....besides he has a huge V8....He probably was thinking the same thing...I spend 100k+ on a new SL550 and I cant blow by a 5 year old Porsche? Sheesh.....
On the street, at speeds below 60mph, you're going to be very dissappointed to find out that MANY cars can go head to head with your car. Even my lowly G35 coupe is going to have no problem. In fact, if I get the holeshot, i can out accelerate a Corvette; that's how small of a difference it is. Those first few yards makes all the difference.
Above 100mph it's a different story, the G35 runs out of steam while my 996 keeps going. But then, that's not why I bought the 996 to begin with. I just think it's really sick that they can keep engineering a rear-engine car to run so well.
Thanks guys... I feel little better. I gotta watch those shifts, hard to get them smooth right before 7200rpm. I guess practice makes perfect, but I don't drive like this everyday.
Ok, with all due respect, you musta missed those gears pretty bad. That Merc is only 380BHP and 4400Lbs, curb weight. I'm sure a 3.6 996 should waste that car...
The only other thing is maybe it was supercharged, or something.
380 in a 4400lb car shouldn't be a prob for a 996.
I think you should practice your shifting techniques. You should know how anyway- since you have a Porsche.. don't be scared to drive it.
Well, for a point of reference..
I raced a C6 vette from two consequtive stop lights. First one I beat him by a half-car length, the second one he beat me by half-car length. Not bad considering he has 100hp on me and weighs maybe 100lbs more.
I raced a BMW M6 (500hp), and I stayed in front of him until somewhere in upper 2nd gear- where of course he muscled past me and was pulling hard by time I was in 3rd gear. I gave him a big thumbs up to show that my ego isn't hurt or anything- just a fun drag race against a car we both knew would stomp me in a straight line.
I enjoy the stop light races sometimes if it's a fast car, and I guess only because my pride isn't tied up in my car's drag racing speed. Everyone has a brother or a friend with a fast mustang or something that'll do the 1/4 in 10secs, so I don't get too wrapped up in drag races- especially since that's not why anyone buys a Porsche.
That being said- it's a good skill to be able to launch and powershift thru the gears. It's fun and effective.
I can definately attest that driving technique makes a HUGE difference. Case in point, after I bought my 99 c2 tip, but before I sold my 01 boxster s, I went out driving with a good friend, who was behind the wheel of the c2. Now, Porsche says 0-60 in like 6.0 for the 99 c2 tip, and, if I recall correctly, around 5.8 for the 01 boxster s. I thought it would be a good race. It wasn't. I confess I am not the best shifter/driver, but it was not even close. Even though I was shifting my boxster S at redline, the c2 tip had me by like 3 lenghts right off the bat, and kept the lead until we both let off around 80 mph. Pretty surprising to me, but I'm sure it was simply driver error, as theoterically it should have been a MUCH closer race.
Hi Guys, I got smoked by an older gentleman in a 4 door mercedes about a year ago. It had 4 exhaust tips sticking out the back and an AMG badge. I was in my Saleen Mustang that was putting out about 420 hp in a 3,000 lb car with 3:55 gears. While I was smoking my tires through the first three gears, he just left me sitting. I later met him and he told me that he regularly drag races the car....11 second 1/4 mile on slicks. I sold the Mustang to a friend and guess what I bought?
If it has an AMG badge or a V12 emblem, you might think twice....389 hp and 420 ft/lb of torque. It's 2/10 of a second slower 0-60. In a rolling start it will probably smoke the 911 up to it's limiter at 155. Through twisties the Mercedes wouldn't stand a chance.
i don't know why we are all bitching about the straight line speed of our cars..... it's NOT design for dragging.... it's purpose was design to murder and kill all opponents on the twisty...... so don't feel bad if you loose to a straight line run..... feel bad if he blows you away on the twisty....... then you can come back and bitch about it...... but if you do...... you WILL BE FLAMED for loosing........
Porsche <> Drag Car
Don't get into stoplight drag races with anyone. You have nothing to prove. I can't even go to the grocery store without some knucklehead trying to race me. I just wave them off.
-Charles
dude unless you have some serious hp like a Turbo GT1 engine, any sort of jump on a sub 6 second 0-60mph car it's going to take a while to catch up and pass esp if the other car gets a jump so don't be crossing swords and **** over this topic here n/a non-GT1 engined owners
Don't sweat it. It's common to lose a sprint against other fast cars. You're not driving a Viper
You'll be the windshield on other occassions, but you were the bug this time. Just be thankful that you're in the car that makes you happy.

Yea, the GT3 is fast but I still don't do stoplight races. What is it with 350Z owners? I had one schmuck damn near run me off the road trying to bait me into a race. I just laugh at these guys and keep doing my own thing. Another guy I work with owns a Z and he's always talking about how we should "run 'em." Sheesh. I quit doing that crap when I was 19 or 20 years old.
I didn't buy a GT3 to race around and try to prove something. I bought a GT3 because I wanted something that was somewhat rare.
-Charles
man.... i have my little brother who drives my 350z twin turbo.... he tries to race me all the time........ as if i don't know who's going to win...............? Me of course, i just take away the keys and that's the race......
The engine on that car is extremely torquey and smooth. Coupled with the benign handling and stability control, you feel like you can take on just about any car. I haven't tried it yet, but being a novice I'll bet I can get around a track faster on my G35 coupe than the 911. It's dead simple to drive and has great acceleration.
the z is much faster then the 996...... last sentence just states that i took the key away so he can't drive the car to race me......... no keys no car no win.......
I bought a cab...with a tip!!!....just love the sound of the engine, the wind in my face and the look of the P when opening my garage door.......there is always a faster car....but are they better???
I thought about the "not speeding" part as well...but that is not really working out for me......3 speeding tickets in 2 years......but I agree in a cab...it sounds like you are going faster at only 50mph.....
i've been lucky.... no tickets (speeding or anything) for the past 8 years........ i think if i did get a speeding ticket and i can't go to school for it, the porsche is going on sale......
