Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just replaced the stock air filter with one from K&N. One question is the hose that attaches to the throttle body. I noticed a black plastic screen and a fine mesh metal screen. I removed them both, should I have left them in place? Does it make any difference? Just seemed to me they were restricting airflow? Any opnions or advice is appreciated. Steve

POST 2Original post

Steve, They maybe restricting airflow, but aren't they also preventing particles from getting sucked into your engine? Maybe leave the mesh? Do a search on here for K&N, i think there has been some posts on this...

POST 3Original post

The black plastic screen and a fine mesh metal screen are air straighteners. They help the MAF to read the air passing through the housing better.

POST 4Original post

If you're still under warranty be sure and put the OEM back before you go in to have the MAF serviced. K&N is famous for causing MAF failures.

POST 5Original post

My understanding is that it is the excess oil from the airfilter that coats the MAF wires causing it to malfunciton. Some folks have suggested to leave the filter on some newpaper overnight to absorb the excess oil.

POST 6Original post

The only way to remove "excess" oil is to have 320HP worth of airflow through the K&N for about an hour. But then after you do that there's likely not enough oil left on the filter to catch the dirt particles that will do serious damage to the engine over the long term.
