Every Saturday morning, a great group of Porsche enthusiasts and I meet in Apex at the Wake Zone on Old Jenks between 7:30am and 10:00am for our regular informal local Porsche owners gathering. It was great to see everyone this morning - I forgot my camera , so no pics this week. However, we had a great turnout: - There were 9 Porsche owners in total - 1 Boxster - 3 996's - 2 911 - 2 997 - 1 Cayman S The owners of the Bean & Bagel also thanked us for our patronage - not a common experience nowadays! Thanks, Christina and Kit! We met 3 new people today and Bruce was back with us, albeit briefly. I can't say I blame him, because he and Martin and Jeff were headed for a PCA autocross event. Welcome, Michael. He owns a black/black 1988 911 Carrera that is beautiful. We look forward to seeing you next week and the weeks to come. Rich was there with his newly lowered 911 - it's ready for his run next week at VIR with the Alfa Romeo owners. Might be worth a run out to VIR next Saturday. Hey, guys, Charles and I talked about getting a group together to spectate or participate in the Hurricane Region's charity concours at the Ingram Collection in Durham. It's Saturday from 8-10 (you might want to check the PCA website/Hurricane Region for the details). It's $25 the day of the event to enter. I propose we meet at Bean & Bagel by 7:30 - they open at 7:00 am, for those who are ambitious. Post if you're interested in going. That was an enjoyable way to start the weekend. We took the long way home. I had to work to keep up with Bob and John since they were just a blur in the distance They did slow a bit so I could catch up John's Boxster is sweet! I finally figured out how to get in front of Bob That's a gorgeous 996, especially in black and we all know that because they are the most beautiful 911's, the black ones get the strongest engines!

Actually I drove by quite early, had to be in the 8:30 area. There were several people gathered outside. FYI: The 3rd Hurricane region autocross is also scheduled for this coming Saturday (June 7). The probable schedule: 10:00 a.m. Inspection/sign-in 11:00 a.m. First Run Group 1:00 p.m. Second Run Group Some folks will meet at the Bean and Bagel Cafe to leave for Maxton at 8 am (the travel time from B&B to the Laurinburg Maxton Airport is about 2 hours).

Hey, Dell and Ahmet, I almost turned around this morning and just went to the B&B - only one guy from the Ferrari group showed up and I missed him by a couple minutes. Bruce (Cayman S) was there too, but I missed him also. So, I'll be at the B&B next weekend. But it won't be for very long because we have guests in town. I'm going to force them to give me my Saturday morning car/coffee/bagel time. Maybe I'll see you next weekend. Or, if you're really interested in a 30-45 minute drive around Jordan Lake, give me a call - I'd be happy to go. The weather this morning was actually perfect for a drive to VIR - I really enjoyed it. I arrived with no intention of participating in the car show, but there weren't that many people there and only 1 Porsche (964 Carrera cab). After I entered, I met John Henry (nickname) from Virginia who owns a beautiful black '82 928. He also entered it in the show. Hey, I actually know Bruce from the kart track (Rush hour in Garner). I actually met John (Boxster) at the Bean & Bagel this morning, and had a nice chat. I will be at VIR Tomorrow, Monday and Tuesday and next Saturday/Sunday as well, so once again, we don't get to meet. I'll keep trying in the future... Ahmet

Just got back from the meet and let me tell you what a nice group of guys. There was a beautiful C4s in basalt I believe and a couple of aero 996s. Cannot express enough what a solid bunch of guys these are and I will try to make it out a little more often. Oh and Charles thank you for the suspension insight, much appreciated

Great to see everyone this weekend - still my favorite way to start it. It was great to meet the new attendees - Martin (C4S), Ian & Tori (Boxster), Peter (Boxster) and Al-x? (996). There was 4 of us this morning - Dell (GT3), Michael (911S), Martin (C4S) and me (996). It was great to catch up with Dell and the GT3. Afterward, Michael, Martin and I drove around the countryside for about 30-45 minutes - a great way to wrap up the morning get-together. Next weekend is Parade in Charlotte . I may stop in for a bagel and coffee before hitting the road on Saturday. If I don't see you in Charlotte, I'll see you at the B&B the week after. The Ferrari guys are doing another meet & great at Brier Creek on July 5 at 9 AM. I'd like to meet ya'all in Apex, but I also want to get the stepson to join me, and the chances of me getting him up that early on a Saturday are pretty slim... Michael

The Ferrari guys event is the now-standard first Saturday of the month expansion of the Hurricane Region Koffee Klatsch. This thing began growing in big leaps starting last winter when Hurricane 928 guru Ray Munsch moved the event from Caribou Coffee, where it started informally with just a few 928 guys, to Camilles. Now the first Saturdays can see upwards of 100 cars - from Porsche and Ferrari to Alfa, Maserati, Aston-Martin, Jaguar, and all sorts of other stuff - crazy TVR racecar was a hit a few months ago. The Cobra guys are showing up as well. Great fun. The event is somewhat weather-dependent. More car fun, brought to you by Hurricane Region, PCA!

OK - I hate to sound like a broken record, but here it goes...I think the Camilles function is great. But, THIS thread is about a Cary/Apex coffee gathering. As you know, the folks out here attend the Camille's function whenever possible - maybe even today. But, we don't every week because it's an hour or more of highway drive time for many of us to/from the location. Wouldn't it make sense to post a Camille's Hurricane Region thread instead of frequently posting in this thread? I think you'd reach a lot more people in the Triangle who are closer to Brier Creek if you posted a thread that had "Brier Creek, NC" or "Raleigh Durham" or "Triangle" or "Hurricane PCA" in the subject line. I'd post it, but I'm in Carolinas PCA and I like to attend my local gathering. Do you see the my point? Bob

Have to agree with Bob on this one. If you Hurricane guys want to advertise your get-togethers then do so in another thread. Bob has set this one up for guys in the Cary/Apex area and it's very poor etiquette to keep jumping in on his thread to promote another event. If you want him to pass along the word send him an email and he will post or let the guys know accordingly if you don't want to start your own thread.

Thanks, Dell. By the way, I'm in Charlotte and I just took a stroll through the garage at the Westin. It's an incredible collection of Porsches from the early 1960s to the latest turbo. Really an amazing sight. I left the 996 at home so I could ride with the family. I'm fairly certain that the Honda Odyssey will not be in the parade I'll get you a GT3 momento from the event. Here's the PM I rec'd from Ralph of Hurricane Region - this is EXACTLY why I left the region. I'm am fed up with being diplomatic about this. It's been 6 months of this crap! Subject: Touchy, Touchy Dear Bob, Here is a simple fact: Wake County is part of Hurricane Region. Hold your event in Chatham County, Chapel Hill, or Durham and I won't say a word. Now, you say that you are just having a little gathering for people who might not want to go "all the way" to Briar Creek. But, by holding these 'Triangle' Carolinas Region events in another region and recruiting people online you confuse potential new PCA members. I spoke to two people at the spring concours who did not know there were so many PCA events in the Triangle. They had mistakenly joined Carolinas. As for the thread... you have mentioned Camille's and other Hurricane events numerous times. I see no problem in adding additional information for potential PCA members who are not familiar with all of the events right here in their own backyard. Ralph, I hold BOTH a Hurricane region membership AND a Carolinas region membership so I think I am entitled to my opinion on this one. Yes, I pay for two PCA memberships just so I can support BOTH regions so don't be such a ***** about this. If Carolinas region members want to meet for Coffee on a Saturday morning then they can do it WHEREVER they want to. If you want to make sure that is held true to your requirement of not being allowed to step foot outside of a regions county boundary then I'll tell you what........we'll move our small coffee gathering of a couple Porsche enthusiasts a couple miles up the road so we are out of "your" county but only if you make sure and more your monthly dinner meeting out of "our" county. Why is it that you have your dinner meeting in Durham which is part of Carolinas region "territory"??? I have attached a map of the Triangle so others can see how stupid you are being about this. Point B is your dinner meeting spot in Durham county which is Carolinas region. Point A is where a couple of us get together for coffee just a couple miles east of Chatham county. So if you want us to move our little get together, then by your requirements, you need to move your dinner meeting. And don't get me started about your charity concours at the Ingram collection that you hold in Durham. Shouldn't THAT be a Carolinas event then? This is one of those classic kettle-pot moments Ralph. So either you can be a hypocrite or you can offer Bob an apology. This is an excerpt from the Hurricane membership part of the website. It seems that this is probably meant for those people that would be in the triangle and live in Carolinas region: If you are as passionate about Porsche cars as we are, then do not hesitate to join now by contacting our Membership Chair. If you are not yet a member of Porsche Club of America, go to PCA's website and tell them you want to join the Hurricane Region. If you don't mention the Hurricane Region, they may automatically assign you to another North Carolina region. Several regions in the country overlap, which is why it is best to let them know you wish to specifically join Hurricane.

Dell - you made it all crystal clear. I'm a little slow....I finally get it. I was too pissed to think it through. Ralph's PMs to me confirm that there is a "turf war" regarding the domain of the Hurricane and Carolinas regions of PCA. I HAD NO IDEA - I guess I should have read the Hurricane PCA website more closely. So, based on one Hurricane officer's perspective, I've infiltrated someone's territory. I thought it was just a car club. Maybe this is how the Crips and the Bloods got started with their infamous conflict. So, I'm just interested in Porsches - that's all. Anyone else interested in Porsches, meet me at the Bean & Bagel in Apex. I really don't mind if you're Carolinas, Hurricane, Peachstate, Midsouth....you get the picture. I participate in this debate. Heh, heh. Apparently I stirred up a little controversy. I was just trying to help spread the word. FWIW, years ago when I was quite the track rat, a friend of mine expressed frustration with one or the other of these PCA groups, and refused to do a school with group "A" and would only work with group "B". It doesn't matter which is which, the whole thing is just silly. And it's stupid crap like that that kept me from renewing my PCA membership. However, I keep my BMW CCA membership going even when I don't have a BMW. Those folks are pretty cool, overall, and even let you drive non-BMWs at their events! Wow. What a concept. Hey guys..........................LV can give more details, but I will tell you this.......You have to run Lowes it at least once. 1. Leaving the infield out onto the middle of the banked track at 2-3 is pretty cool. 2. Accelerating out of 2 at just over 100 and going the back stretch wide open in 5th. 3. Slowing only slightly to take 3 at over 100 and then tracking right in 4 towards the wall to head down the front straight. Very exciting and really makes you appreciate the tire grip. On another note, my first run was in the rain and even with never getting over 85 mph was still fun. It is just a very different feeling seeing all that concrete (the walls) coming at you on those three high speed turns.

I did my very very first driving school (in 1992) at Charlotte. I remember that entering turn 3 at 125 was the upper end of my comfort limit. I'd look up and see those smudges on the wall and think "a car did that" and then I'd slow down a bit. Maybe it wasn't 125, 115 maybe? 95? Who can remember... I destroyed my (stock) brakes trying to slow down for the turn into the infield. The g forces on those banked tracks makes my leetle brain spin. I much prefer road courses. As the president of Hurricane Region, PCA, I want to publically appologize to Bob and members posting on this thread for the side-road it has taken, and the apparent animosity that has developed. I chose this thread for my response rather than creating a new one, since this is where the exchanges have taken place. The reason for Regions in PCA is to make it possible for members to attend events as close to home as possible, without having to drive several hours each way (though that can be enjoyable at times). Whether you belong to Carolinas, Hurricane, Peachstate or any other PCA Region, you are first and foremost a PCA member. The Regions are there for the members' convenience, as for the most part, any PCA member is welcome to participate in any PCA Region's events. The is certainly our policy and I am sure that it is Carolina's policy as well. Unfortunately, when Hurricane Region was formed over 10 years ago, PCA split the Raleigh/Durham/ Chapel Hill are in two, essentially dividing what has become a single metropolitan area. This only affects initial assignment of new members to a Region if they do not specify which Region they want to join. As a PCA member, you can join any Region you want, whether you live there or not. This is not and should not be an issue of whose "territory" events are held in. What is important from the standpoint of PCA, is that members have access to events and don't leave the club because "there was nothing to do locally". Again, I am sorry this got out of hand, and encourage all of you you to participate in whatever events you wish, be they Carolinas, Hurricane or non-PCA related. Jerry Magolan

Jerry....thanks for posting to this thread. I knew the stance that Ralph took was NOT the stance of the region. My wife and I have enjoyed being a member of both regions (2 paid memberships) and thoroughly enjoy ALL the events we get to participate in. We have made some great lifelong friends in both regins and have no plans to "claim" one region over the other.....they are both great in different ways and belonging to both is well worth the price of admission With that said, while I am sure you feel it your responsibility to be accountable for your officers, however, Ralph is the one that owes Bob the apology. It would be nice to see him do that here in this thread. Hopefully we can get this put behind us and get back to the orignial goal...........spending time with other enthusiasts whether it be for a cup of coffee, a driving event, or a fundraiser, regardless of where it takes place.

It's Wednesday, and I'm already badly in need of a bagel, a cup of coffee, and a few hours of Porsche therapy. It's been that kind of week. I'm sitting in a hotel getting ready for a meeting tomorrow wondering how I can add about 20 minutes to the route we've been driving on Saturdays after we leave the Bean & Bagel. What an awesome morning - a big thank you to everyone who attended. We may have had a group of 9 or 10 in the past, but we haven't had a drive afterward. And, I think that the drive should be the "end of the morning/start of the rest of the day" whenever time permits. I nearly forgot to mention that Randy and his son stopped in briefly on the way to a golf outing. Randy's been at the B&B Porsche gathering from the beginning and it's always great to see him! Bob

Of all the post-meet drives so far, the most cars I remember was 4. Having this many made the weekly drive the best one yet. A few shots from bringing up the rear: Here, we deftly maneuver around a guards red 2 HP touring that gets good gas mileage from what I understand. Not sure I like the exhaust, though. Right after this, there was a great shot of Alex and Manil in my rear view mirror, staggered in both lanes but this was the last one before my camera battery died. Enjoy your vacation, Bob! I don't like to drive without it. I also have a plug with the display on it so the unit remains dark on the dash but for some reason that plug doesn't work in the 911 so I use the regular plug. Of course, I always drive the speed limit and follow all traffic laws. Among those rare moments when I may have lost concentration resulting in a slight increase in speed, the detector has helped to keep me out of trouble. Except for the time when I was nailed from behind at an onramp at ever popular Fincastle,VA. And the time when another one tailed me and used his speedo. The only thing I detected was his lights in my rearview mirror.

Where do you find these animated smilies??? As for the Manhattan Bagel location, my only reservation is that it's about 10-15 minutes from the back roads and twisties that I'm familiar with. We could always move to the other side of Apex Peakway (where Bean & Bagel was located) and try the Bruegger's Bagels. It's not very big, but there's plenty of parking lot. Brueggers is right across the street from the cafe-formerly-known-as-Bean&Bagel. In September, there will be a McDonald's up by Randy Hayward at 64 and 15. Maybe we'll try that in the future - I couldn't help myself! Bob

I scoped out both locations and I decided on Bruegger's Bagels in Apex . Here's the reasons why: - They're right near the original Bean & Bagel location (just on the other side of hwy 55, next door to Harris Teeter) - There's ample parking - We are just as close to the country roads and twisties as we were at the B&B. - They open at 6am, so I can actually get less sleep on a Saturday morning if I so choose (I must be out of my mind) A couple of negatives: - We can't see our cars as easily from the windows of the Brueggers; not intolerable. - They don't have espresso based coffees - I know that sounds ridiculous, but I love a latte - It's quite a bit smaller than the B&B. But, there are never more than 7-8 of us, so that shouldn't be a problem unless their Saturday morning business before 10am is huge (I doubt it). Here's the address: 760 W. Williams St. in Apex You'll see the Wendy's and the Harris Teeter from W. Williams. Drive past Cinelli's and Bruegger's is in the corner. You'll probably see a very nicely polished black 996 with an aero kit. See you in the morning. I'll be there as early as 7:30am. If anyone is up for a drive afterward, I'm more than ready for one! Hey, Charles - Both are good options. I'm a little intimidated by how busy Panera is in the morning, but I've only been there on weekdays. The parking lot right in front gets a little hairy at times. The Starbucks on Kildaire is one of my favorite spots. It just takes a little bit longer to get to the good roads. Don't get me wrong - there are disadvantages to Bruegger's too. So, if we don't like it tomorrow, we can always relocate to some other lucky place of business - who wouldn't want us to loiter in their lobby? We're very nice and awfully stylish... Bob

Our first experience with the Apex Bruegger's was only mediocre. While the location wasn't bad, there were some drawbacks... - The Bruegger's manager/owner wanted to know how long we would be there (even though the restaurant was almost entirely carry-out business and very few in-store customers) - There were at least 3 Harris Teeter 18-wheelers cruising through that part of the parking lot at that hour of the morning. - The coffee was only so-so; disappointing considering Green Mountain makes some incredible coffees. It just wasn't fresh. But, we had a great drive after we left Bruegger's. Michael led Charles, Manil, John, Alex and me through the Apex countryside to our favorite scenic routes. I agree. How shocked do you think they were when they were pulled over, and then passed by 6 Porsches that were right behind the police car? Even though they probably knew they weren't supposed to be riding 3 wide, and even though we were pretty well-behaved, I speculate that the dialogue after we passed sounded something like this: Policeman: "Do you have any idea how fast you were going?" Bicyclist: "Yup. About 7 miles per hour. Uh..Did you happen to notice the 6 Porsches that passed you? And you still opted to pull over 3 bicyclists? WHAT THE HELL???!!!" See you next Saturday. Bob

Saw a couple of Porsches in Raleigh in May and then again in late June & early July. I'm long overdue posting these pictures of our small gathering last weekend at the Wake Zone. I really like the place. It's a real locally owned location. The only drawback is the lack of bagels. But the proprietor couldn't be nicer. There seems to be the right amount of space for us. Ken, Randy, Martin and I enjoyed some great conversation. A very nice lady walked in and said, "I must be in the wrong place. There are so many nice cars here." Kind of fun. I neglected to get a picture of Ken's 928 before he left. Sorry Ken. On Sunday, Michael ('88 911 Carrera) and Jeff ('01 996) joined me at the Wake Zone for breakfast. We had some great conversation, followed by a great cruise through the countryside - our usual routine. It just never gets old. Jeff showed me the meaning of the words "clean car". We had a great discussion about Zainos and Rejex. His car is beautiful! Concours quality. It's only Tuesday, and I'm ready for the weekend. I had the opportunity to drive the 996 to a Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem meeting yesterday. The car was awesome as usual. It's not often I get over 3 continuous hours behind the wheel. Next Saturday, I hear the Italians are going to be in Brier Creek. Is anyone planning on going? If there are a few of us, I propose that we meet at Wake Zone and caravan over to Brier Creek. Bob

The rebuild is going well. I put 1k miles on it then tore it back down to make the fuel system adjustable. I wanted to finish it up on sunday, but now I am flying to Cali to dive the 09 Carrera w/ the new PDK transmission, through the mountains of Palm Springs. I should be at the next triangle meeting. There are a couple options for coffee get-togethers on Sat mornings. Hurricane region holds an official "Koffee Klatch" at Brier Creek every Saturday morning. There is also a group of us (both Hurricane and Carolinas members) that hold an "unofficial" coffee get-together and drive in Cary/Apex. Often we will drive in a group to Briar Creek if we don't go for a drive around Jordan Lake, etc.. This is the thread to keep an eye for the Cary/Apex coffee get-together.

It was great to see everyone this morning. We had a great gathering - including a new Porsche owner: George and his daughter Katie ('01 996 Cab). We also had Ken, Bruce, Martin, Dell, Rich, Michael, Alex, Charles, John and yours truly. After some great coffee, and a great conversation at the Wake Zone, we headed off to drive around Jordan Lake. The weather couldn't have been better and the drive was outstanding - 8 Porsches. I think I'll limit myself to riding up to VIR one Saturday morning and taking advantage of the kart track, given the costs of a 3 day DE. An example from a NNJR thread : Let's examine the costs for a typical student at the August Glen event: 1) Entry fee: $325 2) Hotel: anywhere from $300-600 3) Gas: 1 tank per day plus the drive to and from the event: $200 4) Tires: figure a student might get through 24 DE days on a set of street tires: 1200 for a new set of Michelins / 24 DE days * 3 day event = $150 5) Brake pads: approximately 6 DE days per set: $300 (cost of track pads for the advanced student or cost of street pads for novice student, but the novice student will likely pay someone to change the pads) / 6 days * 3 day event = $150 So... the true cost of the weekend to the student is closer to $1125. Never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, add up the costs for a event! As well, the costs are drastically different based on car, etc.. For example, on my GT3, my costs were ~$2,200 for a 2-day event and that doesn't include maintenance and mods.

Bob, Was great to meet you and all the other enthusiasts at Wake Zone. Like I mentioned, I used to drive the back roads on my BMW motor bike a few years ago. There are some nice roads back behind Pittsboro. I've attached a route example. It takes about 2 hours. We should check it out sometime. ... and for sure up to a BBQ before the weather gets too cold. Here is a bit shorter drive. Start at the General Store (small cafe) at the traffic circle downtown Pittsboro. 902 421 back up Pittsboro-Goldsboro rd. back to the General Store It's a 1 hour drive. Nice open roads, smooth pavement, fair amount of curves along rolling hills, not much traffic, couple places to pass if needed. Drove it tonight. Good clean fun! Try it out.

Great seeing everyone Saturday morning, and a good run. Sign up the the Carolinas DE at VIR starts today at 1 pm this afternoon. Reasonable too, $ 285 for Sat and Sunday, Friday is for instructors and Solo only. Those of us in the Green and Blue groups get an instructor as part of the fee. Well worth the expense. I have run with Carolina at VIR prior, full course, great fun and a real learning experience and an opportunity to stretch the limits of you and car. I agree with Dell, do not start adding up the cost of having fun!! I usually drive up Saturday morning, home that night and back again Sunday. I would suggest signing up early as these events usually fill up fast.

If any of y'all register for the event as a student and would like me to instruct just make sure and request that when you submit your application for the event. Let me know and I will email Brian and Nadine as well to let them know it is mutual. Had a great time on the drive Saturday!

Hey, thanks for the offer Dell! I can't drive my Porsche to the school, since it's a cabriolet, so I'd like you to instruct me in my turbo-charged, nitrous Viper dragster. My last instructor was such a *****... he kept screaming at me and crying every time we went off at turn 2. And turn 4. And, well, yes, the uphill esses, I went off there a couple of times and then turn 10, woah, that's a tough one and then 14 (yes, yes, I know I should brake there) we went off once at 14 and that sorta tore-up the underside of my car as we went bounding down the hill. Well, really, it was the third time that I did it that it tore up the car. But, good news is that I got it fixed and now I know what that black flag means. And we went off at 19 too but that wasn't really my fault because I was distracted by the all of the yellow flags waving at me. It's really hard to concentrate on passing people when they keep throwing flags. Oh, and the seat belts in the car don't work too well on the passenger side, so I usually suggest that the instructor get some velcro straps or something like that to help keep them in place. But don't worry, I've disconnected the airbags. They make a real mess when they go off, and I'm tired of replacing them after every school. See you at the track! Michael

All, We are planning for a BBQ Run event on Saturday October 4. Hopefully the gasoline issue will be taken care of by then. In case anyone is interested, below are the details. Martin - Since October 4th is the first Saturday of the month, Triangle Italians will hold their monthly meeting at Briar Creek. The plan is to meet at this location between 8:30 and 9:30AM. After checking out the cars, we will promptly leave at 9:30AM to Roxboro, NC through Hwy 70 & 57. - The drive will continue past Roxboro to Kentuck, VA where we will be doing a loop through Turbeville, Cluster Springs, Bethel Hill, to return back to Roxboro. - That will put us back in Roxboro around 1PM to have lunch at Hog Heaven BBQ. Those who do not want to stop for lunch can continue on 57 back to Raleigh/Durham. - After lunch, we will drive back on Hwy 57 to be in the Raleigh / Durham area around 3PM. - The route is about 160 miles round trip so 1 full tank of gas will certainly be plenty. - If you have an RFS radio, bring it. We will be using channel 11.

Can you instruct more than 1 driver at a time? I know that Rich and Charles both said that they would be asking for you - I'd like to also. But, not if it's not logistically possible. Of course, there's always cloning....just like in the sci-fi movies. If not, I imagine a long line of Cary/Apex Porsche owners waiting for their turn with you for instruction. Bob

The max they let us instruct is 2 drivers in a weekend since we have two student groups. However, the caveat is 3 fold......First, both of y'all would be in the same run group and make it impossible to be in two cars at one time . And second, instructing two students as well as driving my own sessions is very taxing. That puts me in the car for roughly 6 hours a day (~2 hours per car on track). Because of that I do not instruct two students. Lasty, by hopping between 3 cars there would be minimal to no feedback and one-on-one time for debriefing, etc.. There are some fantastic instructors in our Carolinas region so I have no doubt you will be happy with your pairing. Let's work on the cloning thing

Bob, if you are looking for some roommates for the condo, let me know as I would be interested. In the past I drove up Sat morning and home at night and back again on Sunday. Would prefer to stay if possible. Hopefully you will get in. I agree with Dell, Carolinas has some good instructors, so no matter who you get as an instructor you will be in good hands. Two random occurences this week: - While travelling for work, I was given room 911 at the Embassy Suites in Concord, NC earlier this week. - I washed the Porsche in the dark and in the rain tonight, with the hope that it will be nice and dry by tomorrow morning. Hello all, just wanted to drop in here and say hey. Although I can't this weekend, maybe one day I will be able make it out to one of the early morning coffee gtgs even though it is probably 45 minutes from my house. If you see this car then it is me, my name is Ralph. Also, if anyone is interested, the Salvation Army is holding a toy drive/fundraiser at VIR on Friday November the 14th from 8-4. A $25.00 donation will get you 20 minutes of paced lap time. While it is paced and no passing is allowed it is a fun experience for people who have never driven on a road course before. I went last year and was able to get up to 120 on the back stretch, so it's not that limited, as long as grandmas not out there driving her Crossfire at 45mph.(happened last year and the pace car caught up with the chase car. I think some passing was allowed during that session) Also helmets are not required. I'll be meeting up with a couple of other guys I know that morning for breakfast somewhere at the Briar Creek shopping center. That's a sweet C4S! Now we'll see what she looks like in action: Here, Bob is making sure that all new Porsche owners understand that the G50 Carrera is the best, most beautiful sports car ever built. For even more action, I experimented with an in-car camera mount and wittled 33 minutes of video down to Youtube's limit of under 10. Thanks in advance for the info. on the clear bra guy, Scott. No rush getting it to me. Dell, I just noticed the message you posted about pictures of the Mercedes E-Class. Sorry about that. It's a beautiful car - even though the engine's in the wrong end. Hey, I have a question about a camera mount for the inside of the car. Dell (or anyone else who knows the rules at DE), would I be allowed to use a camera mount at DE that uses heavy-duty suction cups? I'm guessing no. Michael just bought one and it's sturdy - sturdy enough to be used on the outside of the car (which I'm sure is not allowed on the track). The only camera mounts I've seen other than Michael's have been attached to a roll-bar or cage. Bob

Bob, as a reminder, don't forget to go to the Carolina's Region website to download the necessary forms and information for the upcoming DE. As far as camera's are concerned; on the Tech Sheet it states they must be securely mounted and tethered. Suction cups would not be acceptable. I'm up for meeting at the Wake Zone on Saturday and then caravaning up to Briar Creek. Good to see eveyone this past Saturday.

Hey Bob, it really depends on the type of suction type mount you have. I have a rally mount (think cars running on the side of a mountain at mach 3!) that is "technically" a suction mount but operates with a pump to really hold it on. I ran it for years in the cab and don't use it anymore since my current mount is on the rollbar. I can bring it to the next coffee (not this saturday but next) and show you.

Fun run party of one

Another great morning with our Cary/Apex (and Raleigh and Pittsboro) crew. It was a better turnout than anyone anticipated, given the lousy weather in the morning. Strangely, by the time we left (10am-ish), the sun was shining. Thank you, everyone for a great start to the weekend! Here's who was there: Ken (928), Dell (Mercedes E-Class), Charles (Lexus), Randy (Ford F Series Pick-up), Bruce (Cayman S), Jeff (996), Michael ('88 911 Carrera), and Scott (C4S). After we left the Wake Zone (outstanding coffees and service, by the way), Scott and I were very fortunate to get Dell's help with oil filter changes. Bruce also attended to see the "belly of the beasts" on Dell's lift. A big thanks to Dell for being our group's Porsche professor - he generously opens his home and makes time for us when we need assistance. Well it was just a little wet today. I called VIR before I left the house just to make sure it was still on and the receptionist said, "rain or shine." Unfortunatly it rained pretty much the entire time and turnout was very low. Probably a total of 80 cars, if that. Good for those who wanted to run alot, bad for the cause. I went out for two sessions and throughly enjoyed it even though the first session was fairly slow. They were also offering rides on a JetSki.....whoops, I mean an Aerial Atom, 4 laps for $10. I would have liked to have gone but I forgot my bathing suit. Tommorrow morning my wife has some shower thing to go to so I'll probably head over to WZ around 8.

Also, I thought I was going to be the only Porsche at VIR today until I saw this.

Despite the rain, we had another great turnout on Saturday: Dell (Big Escalade) Charles (Lexus) Jeff (996) Dave (997) Rich (Boxster) Bruce (Cayman S) Ralph (993 Cab) Manil (C4S) Helmut (S200 C/R) As you can see from the list, the rain brought about some big changes in the types of cars that appeared! I took a closer look at Helmut's new S2000 and it's a monster - C/R stands for Club Racer, and it's well equipped for the task. Dave appeared with the first 997 to join our group - great to meet you, Dave. Manil was there with new rims, following a tire/rim issue earlier in the week. The standard C4S rims look terrifice, Manil! I'll be with Rich, Charles, Dell and Helmut at the Carolinas DE next week, and then I'm away for the Thanksgiving holiday the following weekend. So, I hope you all have a wonderful couple weeks until I see you again! For those of you at the autocross (Bruce, Jeff, etc.), call me on my cell phone so we can get together at VIR. Bob

Hey, everyone - long time, no see. I've been absent from the Wake Zone for a couple weekends, and I wanted to confirm early that I'm going to be there bright and early on Saturday. Hey, everyone. I just mapquested our path from Brier Creek to the donation location in Durham, and it's just up the road from the 540 entrance on hwy 55 (the same place we enter 540 on the way to Brier Creek). So, we would drive from Wake Zone, to Brier Creek, stay for 15-30 minutes, and drive right back to the intersection of hwy 55 and 540. Would it make more sense for us to just meet everyone at Crosspointe Church? I understand that the convoy of Porsches, Ferraris and other exotics is part of the attraction. But, I think the place where we make our toy is the place where we would probably have the greatest impact. As you know, I love to take a drive. So, I'll go from the Zone to Brier Creek to the Church with our group. But, I maybe there's another more efficient way. Let me know what you think. Bob

I like karting outdoors at VIR when I'm already up there for another event and when the weather is good (not cold or wet). I expect that Sat mornings are going to be cold until Spring. I also like indoor karting at Rush Hour Karting . While VIR is at least a 70 mile and 1.9 hour trip for me, RHK in Garner is only 23 miles and 0.5 hours away.

Another great start to a weekend. Here's what you miss out on when you sleep in too late: The result was the one air-cooled guy in the middle, surrounded by the faster water-cooled machines. After being either first or last on almost all of the runs, it was great in the middle to see terrific cars ahead and in the mirror! 4 in front, led by Helmut, followed by Charles, Manil and Jeff 4 behind, John, George, Scott and Bob - or is it now TrackBob? My wife and I are done setting out the presents for the big day tomorrow. So, in celebration, I'm posting a couple photos that I took this morning. Hi John. Had my brain operated a little faster, I'd have followed you at the exit in case you might pull into the shopping center so we could meet. I got that idea after it was too late. We did get a bit of driving in. Here's Jeff and Helmut. Just above the side mirror is Helumt's camera that he shot the video with. Our destination was closed so time for a u-turn. Heading back the way we came We eventually got to some curves - here, Bob, Scott and Charles Then on the way home, a nice surprise. I recognized the Rosewood SC Targa right away and grabbed the camera. John, I'll send you a PM with a link to the pics of your SC. I tried to get a good one of your daughter's big smile but didn't quite keep the camera as still as I'd have liked. Once again ... I'm still working on my photography skills. While I was there, I took a look at the Rock'n'Croc videos and they are awesome! Every year in LA, a group of Porsche guys on the Pelican forum have a tradition of a New Year's morning fun run. If the weather is good enough, I am going on a fun run here. I don't know if the Wake Zone will be open or not but if anyone else is up for a run to break in the new year, we'll meet up somewhere. Thanks, Bruce for the heads-up regarding the cyclists on New Year's Day. I propose we choose an alternate route - we don't want to jockey for space with that many bicyclists. How about the Pittsboro area? There are some great roads out there. If anyone has any other suggestions, post them. If we did head out toward Pittsboro, I can determine a route and we could finish at the Carolina Ale House at 15-501 and 64 for lunch. It's been a while since we last saw Randy - maybe he can guide us. Let me know. Bob

Here's a couple of routes as a suggestion. Loop 1 is a shorter one. You start at the traffic circle and end there. Loop 2 is not really a loop but finishes up at the HWY in Sanford for a quick return back home for everyone.

I found a restaurant that is open: Red Robin in Apex (Beaver Creek Crossing) - not perfect, but I've tried 5 locations, and they're all closed. RR is open regular hours (11:00am - 10:00pm). So, I propose that we end at Red Robin. We can also start from there too. The parking lot is huge, and we should have a problem getting in and out that day. More to come on the route. Michael and I drove a potential route to Maple View Farms - beautiful location, but not much fun on the drive there. It was like driving through town, until the last couple miles before the farm. So, Michael and I agreed that we should take our usual drive - the bicyclists will be leaving an hour before we even get together, and their path takes them across 64 - we shouldn't be anywhere near the pack during our drive. all, I was hoping that I would be able to make it, but I am awaiting some parts, and the odds of them arriving tonight AND having time to install them are almost zero. I had to pull a cam cover, and the previous owner believed in triple digit torque on everything, so one of the bolts was rounded off during extraction and most of the rubber gaskets around the bolts ( there are 13 total) also required replacement. Not suprisingly, the bolts themselve are custom Porsche items, not available at your local retailer... Have a great first drive of 2009! -Ken

Go to TarHeel Sports Car Club site, www.thscc.com , then click on "Track", and then click on "News!!" on the upper right hand side of page. This will lead you to registration site. TarHeel has an annual inspection, so once you have your car inspected you are good for the year. I still have mine checked before every event. Cost is $ 325. for the 2 day event.

FYI, I am thinking of doing Trackdaze early March.... https://www.trackdaze.com/ Was running with them last year - you get 4X 30 min sessions per day and very small run groups - a lot of VW/Audis/Porsches and some professional racing team's testing their cars... did their event last spring at VIR and was a lot of fun... I think on the 2nd day there was less than 10 car's in my group.... Can say that I was racing against Randy Probst at VIR at that event....APR had their GTI's running in several run groups for set-up/testint purposes... could hold on with him on the straights but not through the corners ...... very nice guy though...

Awesome time today. Ralph and John nice to finally meet you. I don't have much to offer by ways of pics; had a battery issue with my camera. I'm sure there will be other events with better turnout. Anyway, a couple for your enjoyment. Something that jumped out at me for a car of such high end manufacture though was the seams near the windsheild / hood mount on both the silver and white Maserati GTs; like the pivoted hinge for the hood was an afterthought. Anyway, lots of other nice cars showed up. Other Lambos, a couple GT40s, Factory 5 Cobras.

This must have happened when the Ferrari workers (Maseratis are built in the same factory as Ferrari's) went to lunch across the street from the factory.... ...and then the filling was dry when they came back so they had to put some more on.... has character but no substiute for "German Engineering..."

Thank you for a great Saturday. I really enjoy looking at the photos of the day - they reveal how amazing our Saturday mornings are because of the great people, the new attendees, the great locations, and the beautiful cars. Didn't know if any of the Raleigh crowd might be interested in the auto expo coming Feb 5th-8th. Ahmet - I hope you know that you don't have to be at the Wake Zone at 7:30. 8:00 works well too. Heck, Ken arrived as we were pulling out for the drive at 10:00am. We're laid back about when you arrive. That being said, I agree that we need to have a lunch version of our gathering. I think Helmut and Dell recently proposed it too. I'm in - some variety would be great from time to time. As for this Saturday, I've been staring at my Porsche just waiting for the freakin' weather to dry up. So, this Saturday I could probably be there at 9:30am or thereabouts, if you guys are still around. I'd much rather have a real 996 GT3, or even a 997 C2S as opposed to a base car w/the body kit. I don't think the 997 pulls off the aerokit as well as the 996 does on the narrow body.

What a beautiful day after 2 rainy days...after lunch took the Porsche out for a spin on our country roads and could feel the stress just melt away...nothing like a blue sky, sunshine and speed to relax me....what was nice to is I didn't have to pull over and wait for Bob to catch up...... like we do on our Saturday runs........snicker...snicker...

OK - I've thought about it. I'm staying with my 996 - I'll let John know in the morning. The red 997 is beautiful, but I parked my 996 right next to it and I didn't feel strongly enough to make the change. Also, the red 997 has 36K on the odometer after almost 3 years. My 996 has 36K on the odometer after 10 years and I know how well it's been maintained. I guess this means that the red 997 didn't mean anything to me - it was just a superficial attraction. Now I have to live with that guilt. Bob

Good choice. I believe i've seen your car at european performance before being serviced and it is clean! Your car will definitely pull a premium in later years, and I think (hope) the 996s are close to hitting bottom in terms of depreciation.

As for next weekend, I don't mind riding in the Escalade (thanks, Dell), and I certainly don't mind going to Brier Creek for the PCA/Italians Day. I'm even thinking our regular ritual is fine too. Rich - I couldn't agree with you more about potential mods to the 996. I tried to beat Dell and Scott to the Wake Zone, but I dawdled at home for 1 minute putting in my contact lenses. It cost me the bragging rights and the parking space! Dell said he was so intent on getting there first that he came down the driveway sideways - after riding with him at VIR, I believe he could do that! Next Saturday, I will take them on again. I might be asleep during the conversations that morning, but I could be there first!!! This certainly supports my wife's argument that I'm a little obsessive-compulsive. Bob

Grove Park Inn!!! My wife may actually be up for that, although I would have to take the Boxster as she will not ride in the 911. Grove Park has a great Spa for the Ladies and a great fireplace to sit in front of on cool nights. You can actually walk in it, it is that big! And, Biltmore has a nice wine shop. Great place for pictures of all the Porsches right in front of the Biltmore. Looking forward to Saturday, I'm up here in cold, snowy Detroit. Not where you want to be in the winter.

Wife will be out in the morning with my older daughter performing some volunteer work at the ASPCA and the challange will be if I can wake the younger girl early enough. I just reviewed some of the Charlotte coffee get-together information. Looks like their monthly event is huge - more than 100 cars. It might be fun to check it out one weekend when we have 8 hours free (2.5 hours to drive each way and 3 hours to hang out)... Seriously. I'd love to see it some time.

What a beautiful day. I hope you guys had a chance to drive in this weather. I called Scott, Dell, and George to find out who could "come out and play" before daylight was done. I also rudely dropped in on John (red Boxster). So, Scott, John and I had a great drive around the Lake. There was one brief encounter with a scooter on one of the winding roads (for about a minute). Other than that, it was a great drive - windows down; sunroof (or convertible top) open; and great scenery. Dell and George - sorry for the short notice. It was an impulse. Also, the sister car to the red 997 aero is living in my neighborhood. I saw it for the first time today. Now, if I can get the owner to attend our meetings, that would be pretty cool. His wife recommended that I leave him a note with the details - so I did. Have a great week! Bob

Hi, Charles - Oh, she left a great list! In fact, I wouldn't have driven the Porsche today if it hadn't been for the process of cleaning her car. I drove it to Carolina Express car wash on 55, and the drive there takes me on some of our favorite roads. They were so beautiful in this weather that I couldn't stand it!

Sorry I missed the last meet. BTW I have a set of 997 GT3 brake ducts. I ordered 2 sets but ended up only using one. I have these on my 996 and these are great upgrades for any 996 (or 997 i guess) carrera. If anyone local wants them please let me know. Great way to extend brake pad life and wheel bearing life. $30

I'm up for the M-Powered trip on Saturday, although I probably won't be able to stay through lunch. Serenity - We'll have to ask you to stay to the back of the pack. All that horsepower and torque at the front could spell trouble with "Johnny Law" (Jeff gets credit for that term). I once drove an AMG version of the SL500. It was scary fast - but incredibly controlled. I remember feeling like I was in the cockpit of a jet. Can't wait to see your car. My wife got one on Big Woods road going 10 over, 65 in a 55, just last week. Cop was in a red Dodge unmarked, sitting and waiting on a side road. Told her it would be dangerous to hit a deer in that small car at that speed. She was driving the Boxster. We need more doughnut shops for them to patrol.
