I could see $25k tops and that factors in newer tires (not tires made before 2009, check the date codes on the tires), frequent (not mileage based) maintinence, and the Aero Kit.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am looking at a '99 C2 6 speed with factory aerokit that is the "perfect" 996 for me in terms of color, options (sport seats, color matched belts), current mods (full fabspeed) and under 17K miles, well maintained etc.
I'm budgeting ~3000 for PPI, IMS/RMS, and other misc things I might have done during the IMS retrofit, and trying to figure out what is a fair price for a low mileage well-maintained but 14 year old 996. I don't want to give too much info because I don't want anyone else to buy this car!
Any thoughts/input on a price range would be greatly appreciated.
Hoping to button up the deal in the next week or two!
thanks!
-Ross
Thanks. He is currently looking for ~10K more than that so I am afraid the deal wont work if he thinks its worth that much more than the current market. I need to figure out how much my color choice and the factory aero are worth to me as well I guess.
$25K is a solid price - if the car's very well sorted and documented. I can envision anything between $20 and $25k...
Billy, don't you have another forum to go troll in?
He's looking for $33K? That's not realistic AT ALL. I purchased my '99 from a dealership, two years ago, for $30K, which was a little high. For reference, my '99 C4 came with full Aero, full suspension, Tubi-style exhaust, an amazing tire/wheel setup, 100% clean history/carfax. This guy had better be offering an amazing setup for $33k.
I paid right around 19k for my '99 C2 in Dec 2011. Granted it had more miles (58k) and not as many options but even so, his asking price seem very high. I have since spent another 4.5k on the IMSB, RMS, clutch, tires and front brakes.
I agree and no more than $25k unless you are planning to marry this particular car and nothing else on the market matches it. Kindly remind the seller that there are 540+ 996 models out there for sale in inventory currently and see if he's interested in working up a deal and moving on with his life now or wait 10+ years to find a buyer willing to pay his price when the cycle restarts and Porsche makes a fried egg version again.
Your budgeting $36,000 for a 1999 C2 996? Thats not realistic or rational. Dont fall in love with any particular car. I think you should look at several to get a better idea about asking prices. JMHO of course.
The owner might have some vision that since he didn't use the car (ridiculously low mileage for a 14-15 year old car) that it is worth north of $30K. It isn't. not to anyone of sound mind anyway.
I could see $25k tops and that factors in newer tires (not tires made before 2009, check the date codes on the tires), frequent (not mileage based) maintinence, and the Aero Kit. $25K tops.
Thats exactly what you said and then you edited your post.
Im pretty sure if you add $33,000 and $3000 it equals $36,000. I was telling you nicely that the car is way overpriced and that you should not consider sinking $36,000 into a 1999 996 regardless of its mileage. I paid way less than that for a much newer low mileage, loaded C4S. On the other hand, buy it if you want to.
His asking price plus my budget for PM does not equal my budget. lol.
Anyway - I am going to offer 25K and see what happens. If I am spending 35K+ on 996 it will be for a tt. 25K leaves $ for proper PM and toys down the road.
thanks again for the input everyone!
You found your car but you won't find your price in the near future for this car. He'll never come down $8k, in the near future.
He is totally banking on low mileage but that is not necessarily a good thing for these cars that need to be driven regularly.
Flush it from your mind and look at a newer car for around $28-30k asking; there should be a lot of them.
A happy outcome is my Xmas wish to you!
That car is off the table. As I thought - he is pretty firm on his price.
Looking at another aero in the classifieds now but was hoping to find something local.
The search continues!
I find sellers that have high prices on the 996's, especially the mk1's, not really serious sellers as they are just fishing and/or bought this initially as an "investment" and don't want to come to the realization that their "investment" has gone down to Junk Bond levels.
OP, Like I said before, there are over 540+ 996 models to choose from just in the USA currently. I'm sure you should be able to find at least a couple that meets your needs.
KK will soon recruit enough owners on here to make them want to sell their cars so figure 600+ easily within the next few months.
I was thinking 25k as well, which seems to be about the high end of what the group is coming up with. If it's the absolute right one, yadda, yadda, yadda, I may go one or two thousand over, but there would have to be a compelling reason..
5 k more you can get an 01 turbo and remove the IMSB expense, but add other ones I suppose..33 k is high, and I am a big 99 fan. Paid 20k for mine 2years ago.
Good luck with the search, it's part of the fun.
Absolutely, and I can understand why you're willing to pay a bit more instead of purchasing a stock 996 and spending the money on the upgrades. Had I gone that route, I would have spent more money than I did, and I would have cheaped out in places the previous owner didn't (Example: I probably would have just hacked the mufflers instead of buying $2000 stainless steel cans).
If you're buying from the guy who did the upgrades, it'll be hard to convince him that the aftermarket parts don't add anything close to their original purchase price to the value of the car.
Another data point. Last Jan. I bought basicly your car 'cept in yellow, new tires with 75,000 miles for $25000. The car was very clean and has been trouble free. I'm slowly doing the up grades. Done the IMS, RMS, AOS. Didn't really need to do it as the bearing looked and felt new and no leaking seals, but while there. Next is 3rd radiator and new water pump. I've put 8,000 miles on it. Great car.
I paid $21k for a metallic Pine Green (special order color) 99 with full "supple" leather interior, fully adjustable driver and passenger seats, etc. with only 28k miles, two owner, full maintenance history, clean Indy PPI, clean multi point inspection from a local Porsche dealer, two years of paint and leather care provided by seller. I can go on and on. The prices of these cars are a steal. No need to buy the first gem that catches your eye.
$25K at the high end as you describe. Also, one of the advantages of a good PPI is that you can use the info when you are negotiating the deal. I paid $15K for my 2000 Carrera 4, four years ago with a little over 100K miles. He was asking $18.5K and with the info from the PPI, we got him down to fifteen. Of course, the other advantage is the PPI gives you the true value of the vehicle
Don't be afraid to walkaway, there are lots of these cars on the market right now
And the seal grey is gone. Lol.
Seriously considering the lapis blue aero in the classifieds. Would need to ship but wouldn't need to worry about IMS clutch etc as it's been done recently.
Hoping to get to the PPI stage on this one.
Sting - Don't be in a hurry. Take your time and get the right one. Looking is half the fun. Let us know what you're looking for (acceptable years and models) and we'll watch for you. One reason the pricing threads always get a lot of replies is that most Rennlisters keep an eye on the market as a hobby. But most of us aren't really buyers (tough to get permission to buy another Porsche for most of us!).
Thanks for the offer to help. I agree with you that looking is fun. I am lucky enough to have some $ earmarked for a 911. But the reality is that if I don't actually pull the trigger in the next month or so it will slowly go towards other things like guitars, the house, etc.
So I don't want to rush, but I do want to take advantage of the timing and the winter here in the NE to get a better deal on a RWD car if I can. I won't pull the trigger unless its the right car. On the flip side I can pull the trigger on the right car very quickly which is nice.
I am looking for a 996 (the newer the better) in the under 30K range ideally C2 with aero kit with under 60K on the clock. I would consider a nice C4S but not interested in the C4 or Targa. Coupe only. 6 speed only.
I can do a remote PPI and have the car transported, but a car local to NY/CT would be great.
I can spend more on a well-sorted car that has already had the IMS/RMS addressed recently and properly, but if the car has not had those addressed, my first stop is to have that done plus any other little things that make sense at the same time, clutch if needed, etc. I do my own work for the most part and have access to a lift right next door which is nice.
So figure a total budget of 35. Ideally spend 26-29 on the car, and then have another 6-9K for stuff - both PM and upgrades / wear items.
You know I just saw this part of your post. Not sure what your issue is but that's totally fabricated. I wouldn't have claimed that budget because my budget is 35. I certainly didn't edit my post to change my budget.
Anyway...Here is the 99 I was looking at. He's asking 35

This may be older than you are looking for (it's a 99), but is a C2 coupe, 6 speed with aero.

It is at an Albany area indy shop with a good reputation. Full disclosure: I bought my car from these guys and negotiated IMS bearing, RMS, AOS, clutch, and flywheel into the purchase. This shop is where I take my car for service and they're one of the sponsors of the Hudson Champlain region of the Porsche Club.
Anyway, it's probably at the extremes of your age and mileage criteria, but may be worth a look.
Thanks! I reached out to get more info on the cars history.
So are there multiple aero kits from the factory? Or are some of these OEM vs factory installed? I thought the taco and the gt3 front were the "factory" aero...
This one might or might not be a factory installed aero. You'll need to check the option sticker under the hood to verify.
Either way, that car doesn't have a aero front bumper. Not sure of the story there.
The rear spoiler is a version of Aero spoiler but one that came on more convertibles than coupes. The "taco" wing is what usually came on aero equipped coupes.
Exactly, you need the front bumper to be an "aero" and to have it balance out the sideskirts and rear wing IMO. Plus that car seems on the high side of pricing.
