Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had the day off and decided to tackle some DIY projects. My only DIY since purchasing the car back in February has been replacing the headlight switch. My tasks for the day were to replace the windshield wipers, replace the sun visor mirror lids, do an oil change and replace the engine mounts. I did the windshield wipers first since I knew it would be easy. :-) Next, it was off to replacing the sun visor lids. A couple weeks after owning the car, the driver side lid broke in my hand when I opened it. After reading a few posts, I decided to purchase a pair of non-illuminated lids from Suncoast. The Suncoast ones are nice, because they are plain black and don't have the warning labels. Taking the lids off the non-illuminated versions from Suncoast and putting them on the illuminated ones were not that easy. I got the passenger one done fine but after installing the driver side one, it did not open and close properly. I then tried to remove it and broke the receiving piece on the actual visor in the process. Arghhhh.that's the ugly. I see that Suncoast sells the illuminated assembly but they recommend professional installation. http://www.suncoastparts.com/product...Code=POTE996IN Has anyone here installed this part? I imagine that some soldering may be required which I have no problem with. Next it was time to do the oil change. I was able to get the car up on 4 jack stands in about 5 minutes thanks to Porken's lift bars and a low profile jack. I didn't expect it to be that easy. For the most part, everything with the oil change went smoothly. The only issue I had was draining the oil. I have one of those 15 quart black containers with a small hole in the top for catching the oil. Those 9 quarts came out too fast and overflowed onto my garage floor. This is the bad.. Next time, I will use a 2 gallon paint bucket to catch the first few quarts and then use the oil container to catch the rest once it starts to flow more slowly. And lastly, the engine mounts. Things also went smoothly here for the most part. I did struggle with one of the screws for the SAI pump which has to be removed to access the driver's side mount. The space is really tight which makes access difficult. I also couldn't find the torque specs for the engine mount screws and nuts in my Bentley manual. I torqued the lower nuts to 50 ft-lbs and the upper screws by feel. My torque wrench could not fit in order to torque the upper screws. If it had, I was planning on 20 ft-lbs which I found in a forum post but the person that posted that number did not seem certain. So to conclude, it was a great experience. Hopefully this motivates someone to wrench on their 996. It's very doable. Any comments are welcome!

POST 3Original post

I would suggest you make the hole larger in your 15 qt container. That is what I did. No more mess.

POST 4Original post

Did you open the vent on the drain pan before you pulled the plug? That is supposed to allow the oil to flow into the pan. I use an open top one like this. http://www.blitzusa.com/products/oil...ns/podp5dp.htm

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 10985783

I did not open the vent. Rookie mistake. I guess all that trapped air had nowhere to go. I will have to try that next time but will still have a bucket handy just in case.

POST 6Original post

I believe the bottom bolts on the engine mounts get torqued to 63 ft-lbs, and the top ones to about 20 ft-lbs. Be careful on the top ones as they break easily, ask me how I know...

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 10985926

+1. Haha on the top bolts. I'm glad I'm not the only one. But I blame a faulty torque wrench combined with me being a total novice. Among my New Year DIYs are the 997 shifter, tail lights and internal LED lighting. It's going to be awesome when I put it in reverse to get out of my garage... the internal lights will throw sparks, the tail lights will behave like strobe lights and instead of reverse I will plow right through the front of the garage and into my house.
